Krusher Cruises To
Victory In Cruiserweight Debut |
|
By Igor Frank
Thrillers entry into a world of boxing continued on
Saturday night as Great Western Forum in Inglewood
California played host to Fight Club’s TrillerVerz .
Boxing and music mix very well according to color
commentator and former welterweight champion, Shawn
Porter. And that is what TrillerVerz was all about,
mixing rap competition with fistic combat. Since I don’t
know” s..t” about rap (as late Roger Mayweather would
say) I will direct my attention to boxing show, which I
would venture to call a family affair since it featured
three kids of former ring star Fernando Vargas, a son
Ring legend, Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield and two
Pulev brothers from Bulgaria.

Bentley: "You Don’t Get
Paid For Overtime" |
|
It’s homecoming night for
South London’s Denzel “2Sharp” Bentley (15-1-1, 13KOs)
as he looks to reclaim the British Middleweight Title
against Luton’s Linus Udofia (17-0, 9 KOs) live and free
on Channel 5 on Friday May 13 from 10pm.
Bentley suffered his first career loss to Felix Cash in
2021, but immediately bounced back with a win later in
the year to set up this exciting title bout at the
Indigo at the O2 in London. You will rarely find someone
with such a vicious knockout ratio carrying such a calm
demeanour with them. It may be a relaxed Bentley outside
of the ring, but inside it is a man who has either
retired his opponent or stopped them in every victory
since a points decision win back in April 2019. “I’m
always calm and relaxed. I’m doing something I enjoy so
there’s no need to be nervous or uptight or anything
like that,” he said. “I know I’ve put in the work, so
I’m calm.”

The Continuing Story Of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe |
|
By William Trillo
Okay, let’s be honest here. When the judges’ scorecards
were getting read by David Diamante after the Bivol vs.
Canelo fight and he announced identical scores of
115-113 by all three judges, how many of you immediately
thought, “Uh oh! No way, they are going to give this
fight to Canelo.” I know I did. In fact, Dmitry Bivol
himself said he was worried when he heard those 115-113
scores.
But as we found out moments later the unanimous decision
was rightly given to Bivol. As it should have been.

Denis Radovan enjoyed a
successful homecoming with a second round TKO win over
the experienced Rafael Bejaran last night in front of
frenetic fans at the Sartory Saal in Cologne, Germany.
The atmosphere was electric for Radovan’s first fight in

delivered as he dropped his opponent three times in the
second, forcing Bejaran’s corner to throw in the towel.
It was the third successful defense of the IBF European

Bivol Stuns Canelo To
Retain
His Light Heavyweight Belt |
|
By William Trillo
Photos: German Villasenor
Like a Quarterback standing in the pocket and avoiding a
heavy defensive rush Light Heavyweight Dmitrii Bivol
(20-0, 11 KO’s) not only stood in there with Saul Canelo
Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KO’s) but he did not get sacked. In
fact, Bivol did what no one in the packed T-Mobile Arena
was expecting, he ruined the Cinco May Festivities by
defeating Canelo handily. The Matchroom promoted fight
that was streamed by DAZN will surely go down as one of
the biggest upsets in boxing this year.

Las Vegas T-Mobile
Undercard Results |
|
By William Trillo @
Ringside
Super Lightweights Montana Love (18-0-1, 9 KO’s) and
Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela (25-3-1, 15 KO’s) were the
Main Event on this hot Las Vegas fight night card. The
bout started intense as Valenzuela was dropped late in
round one. Not to be outdone he returned the favor in
the next round when he sent Love to the canvas in the
next round. But that was going to be it as the fight
became a chess match, a boring chess match. The fact is
the fight became so dull that the crowd was booing more
than they were cheering. The action the fans wanted to
see was not taking place. The fight would go on like
this for the entire twelve rounds. The crowd would show
its disapproval one more time when the scores were read.
It was a unanimous decision as all cards read 114-112
across the board for Love. Apparently, the fans in
attendance did not agree. For his efforts Love took home
the Vacant IBF North American Super Lightweight Title.

Taylor vs. Serrano Final
Press Conference Quotes |
|
Katie Taylor: "The
amount of media we have had to do all week was huge. I’m
sick of talking about myself but it’s been an amazing
week so far. This is definitely very different than how
I started boxing when I was eight or nine years old.
Like Eddie said, I had to pretend I was a boy to get
fights. Women’s boxing wasn’t even a sanctioned sport in
Ireland. Now here we are many years later headlining
MSG, the most iconic venue in boxing. Making history as
the biggest women’s boxing match in history is just
incredible. This is all of the sacrifice that I have
been working for, for sure."

Mercito Gesta Defeats
Joel Diaz Jr. Via Unanimous Decision To A Sold-Out Crowd
At Fantasy Springs |
|
Golden Boy returned to its
Coachella Valley home at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino
with an exciting night of boxing to a sold-out
boisterous crowd. The main event of the night featured
an eventful 10-round lightweight fight between
Palmdale’s Joel Diaz, Jr. (26-2, 22 KOs) and San Diego’s
Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (33-3-3, 17 KOs). The first
round started off very active as Gesta knocked Diaz, Jr.
to the canvas twice, with Diaz, Jr. struggling to
maintain his balance. Saved by the bell, Diaz, Jr.
recovered and performed excellently in the second round,
cornering Gesta and visibly hurting him. As the fighters
grew more comfortable in the ring, they traded blows
staying in the pocket, both relentless. The fighters
brought the cheering crowd to their feet with their
fearless performances as the judges determined their
fate. With scores of 93-95, 92-96, and 92-96, the judges
ruled in favor of Mercito Gesta, crowning him the victor
via unanimous decision.

Billy’s Boxing Blog
Big Boxing Weekend Thoughts:
Don’t Count GGG Out, Not Just Yet |
|
By William Trillo
The general consensus going into the Gennady Golovkin
vs. Ryota Murata fight was an overwhelming concern that
Golovkin, who just turned 40 years old, was past his
prime and was more than vulnerable facing the rugged
Murata on his home turf.
In the early rounds it looked as though those concerns
were valid as a nonstop body attack had Golovkin
reeling. He was visibly uncomfortable. GGG was wincing
and his body language was not good, he was hurt, no one
could doubt that.

Ryan Garcia Defeats
Emmanuel Tagoe |
|
San Antonio was treated to
fireworks at the Alamodome today when the undefeated
boxing superstar, Ryan Garcia (22-0, 18KOs) of
Victorville, CA, made a triumphant return to the ring
against the top-rated Emmanuel “The Gameboy” Tagoe
(32-2, 15KOs) of Accra, Ghana. The 12-round lightweight
fight featured a strong performance from Garcia to a
crowd of 14,459 as he landed an early power punch that
sent Tageo to the canvas in the second round. Once both
fighters found their rhythm, Garcia systematically broke
down the Ghanaian boxer as he landed precise punches to
the head and body. Tagoe tried his best to keep his
distance using an ineffective jab. Garcia visibly hurt
Tageo in the 10th round, but the Ghanaian fighter
resorted to holding Garcia to prevent further
punishment. Ultimately, the judges ruled in Garcia’s
favor with scores of 119-108, 118-109, 119-108 for a
victory by unanimous decision.

Golovkin Unifies WBA & IBF
Middleweight Titles
With 9th Round Stoppage Over Murata |
|
Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1,
37 KO's) unified the WBA and IBF Middleweight Titles by
stopping Ryota Murata (16-3, 13 KO's) in the 9th round
in Saitama, Japan. Murata, who held the WBA Title, gave
Golovkin a hard time early, hurting him to the body in
the 2nd round. In round 3 both men started going to war
in a back-and-forth fight. Golovkin withstood the best
Murata had to offer and began to take control in the
4th. By round 6 Golovkin was walking Murata down and to
the ropes. Murata offered minimal in return, holding his
gloves high to protect his head. Golovkin rarely went to
the body, but head-hunting was enough as Murata was
turned around and downed from a quick right hand in the
9th round. Murata's corner had seen enough and threw in
the towel to prevent their fighter from taking further
punishment. Final time was 2:11.
