Lemieux Trainer Marc Ramsay Says Risk & Danger May Explain Canelo’s Surprise Opponent

By William Trillo

The newly crowned Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez caught the boxing world by surprise on Friday when via Twitter he announced his December fight at MSG would be against WBA 168 pound champion Rocky Fielding. Many insiders assumed Canelo’s next challenge would be Montreal’s David Lemieux.

Fighting on the undercard of Canelo vs. GGG 2 the Montrealer crushed Spike O’Sullivan in less than one round. With Canelo’s victory in the main event that night a fight featuring the two seemed like a perfect fit. Canelo was cleared to fight in December and New York’s Madison Square Garden looked to be the venue if choice. The speculation on date and venue were spot on but the opponent came as a shock to almost everyone.

One of those who was caught off guard was Montreal trainer Marc Ramsay. Pound4Pound spoke to Ramsay hours after the news was confirmed to get his reaction in this short Q and A.

Pound4Pound: Marc, today Canelo announced that his next fight will be in December at MSG, but in a surprise he revealed that he would be facing WBA Super Middleweight Champion Rocky Fielding with that 168 pound belt on the line. It was assumed by most that Canelo’s next fight would be against your fighter David Lemieux. How disappointed were you when you heard this announcement and how did David take the news?

Marc Ramsay: It very disappointing for the entire team. Canelo was the name that David wanted and as a coach I saw that fight as a really good challenge.

P4P: Why do you think Canelo chose to go this direction?

MR: 168 pounds will be easy for him to make, that will be no work for Canelo. Plus, with a title on the line I can understand their decision. They are coming off two wars in a row and David represents a risk for all boxers.

P4P: Do you think there is some apprehension by Canelo to fight David because he is such a big puncher?

MR: I think that was one piece of the puzzle. Like a said, David represents a big danger to everybody.

P4P: Does David want to fight before this year is over and what direction will you take now that the Canelo fight is not a reality at the present time?

MR: Yes we expect to fight in December. Now we will sit down with the team and target a new challenge.

Pound4Pound thanks Ramsay and wishes he and his team the best for the remainder of 2018.
