A “Stream” Of Consciousness

By William Trillo

This weekend I jumped feet first into the deep end of the new era in boxing and I am happy to report that I was more than pleasantly surprised. With multiple fights being streamed all over the internet it was time to check it out. The first thing I was going to have to do was get my Smart TV to grab the various streams and update my Surface Pro to get the latest and most efficient browser. Truthfully I can’t believe I am saying this, but it was a breeze. With all my devices locked and loaded I was set for a big evening of boxing and I wasn’t disappointed. It turned out to be a pretty good evening of fisticuffs. The highlights of the night go as follows:

Berchelt vs. Roman on ESPN+

In what turned out to be the best fight of the night, Miguel Berchelt and Mickey Roman went to war in a battle that will be added to the long list of Mexican grudge matches along the lines of Barrera vs. Morales and the like.

This one started out looking like it was going to be a give and take bout throughout as both men exchanged ferocious blows in the early stages. Roman was landing a beautiful counter right hand seemingly at will. One of those punches buckled Berchelt for a moment but he quickly recovered.

As the rounds ensued it was becoming clear that Berchelt was breaking down Roman quickly. Body shots followed by sharp blows to the chin put Roman down but he was able to rise and fight on in true Mexican warrior fashion.

Things did not get better for Roman and his corner was becoming very concerned suggesting they were getting ready to stop the bout. But how could they stop a fight when their fighter kept throwing punches and making a case to stay in there with Berchelt?

That decision would not be there’s to make in round nine. Berchelt went on a murderous tear dropping Roman again. But like before Roman somehow got to his feet only to be met by an onslaught of punches that led the referee to jump in and stop the carnage before the round was over.

With the victory Berchelt kept his WBC Super Featherweight title and looks to numerous big money fights in the near future.

Barrera vs. Monaghan on Facebook

I am going to be honest here and tell you of the three streams I was set to watch on Saturday night I wasn’t very confident of the quality I was going to get on Facebook. Earlier attempts in the month were spotty at best. But, as I mentioned above, I downloaded the latest browser and BINGO, it was a great feed that didn’t let me down.

In the Main Event Light Heavyweights Sullivan Barrera and Sean Monaghan went toe to toe in the hard fought battle everyone expected it would be. With eyes on a title shot looming on the horizon both men gave it their best. In the end though, it was Sullivan who had the superior strength and skill. “Sully” was awarded the clear cut unanimous decision for his efforts.

Burnett vs. Donaire on DAZN

Ryan Burnett lost his WBA Bantamweight title to Nonito Donaire when he threw an errant punch that hit nothing but air forcing him to over reach and wrench his back leaving him helpless for the remainder of round four. Burnett could not move out of his corner and the fight was stopped as he could not get off his stool to resume the fight in round five.

The fight started off pretty evenly and both men were landing well. It’s really a shame this one had to end like this. This one looked like it was going to be a barn burner.

For Burnett who lost his undefeated record and title belt, this will be a tough one to swallow.

For Donaire, this is certainly not the way anyone wants to win a title but things don’t always go as planned or expected. Donaire grabs the title and will move on in the World Boxing Super Series.

In closing I can say unequivocally that this past weekend’s streaming went without a hitch and I am ready to embrace boxing’s new era with open arms.
