2019 Random Thoughts
By William Trillo
With 2020 officially on the clock I decided to give 2019 one last run through the memory bank. No “Best Of” or Top Ten list here. I’m sure you are as sick of them as I am….
So in no particular order here are some things that stick out in my mind as 2019 boxing notable news.
Tank Davis did himself literally no favors with his entire act. From coming in overweight to not being able to dispatch a one-legged glass chinned senior citizen, the Gervonta stock has dropped dramatically.
To everyone who went over and above the call of duty to see to it that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. would be allowed to fight after not submitting to a drug test or making the contracted weight…You got exactly what you deserved, I’m sure you are all very proud of yourselves. I’m curious if you felt guilty at all while you were stuffing that undeserved profit you made from that sham promotion into your pockets.
In lieu of losing some pretty hefty sponsorship’s I fully expect DAZN to line up a string of bums for Anthony Joshua that will be compared to the Joe Louis Bum Of The Month Club. Without Joshua DAZN may have trouble paying the rent.
If you must make your monotonous Pound for Pound lists please keep the name Deontay Wilder out yo mouth. Yes, dude carries an eraser in that right hand but his penchant for taking on inferior competition speaks volumes.
Speaking of Pound for Pound lists… If I were to scratch one together, I can assure you both Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Teofimo Lopez would be on it. In fact one of them could crack into the top five.
Say what you will about Jean Pascal, dude will capitalize on stupid mistakes on his way to championship victories. (See Marcus Browne and Badou Jack).
I’ve been hard on Nonito Donaire over the years but in a loss his gutty performance against “Monster” Inoue changed my tune. Two thumbs up to you Nonitio!
Josesito Lopez exposed Keith Thurman and Manny Pacquiao pulled the covers clean off.
I don’t know about you but GGG’s fall from grace caught me way off guard. I didn’t see that coming.
Haven’t heard much from the Gvozdyk honks since Artur Beterbiev pounded “The Nail” into oblivion.
If Chris Arreola had Joe Goossen in his corner over the last decade he would have become World Champion.
Last but not least, like it or not it’s Canelo’s World and we all live in it.
