HBO Latino Title Night
Golden Boy's "Boxeo De Oro" Hands Out 2 Belts! By Will "The Thrill" Trillo Photos: Bret "The Threat" Newton
It was an early Christmas for 2 fighters tonight as Golden Boy Promotions gave out WBC Latino Titles in the legendary Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The belts weren't merely gifts though, as both fighters had to fight to earn their rewards! In the Main Event of the evening, a big time slugfest went down as the little guys, 112 pounders, threw bombs from pillar to post. In a fight that was entertaining and action packed, the 2 combatants, Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria (15-0, 9 KO's) & Angel Priolo (30-1, 20 KO's), went at with all their heart and speed, and there was a lot of it to go around! By the second round of the fight the 2 were exchanging blows in rapid fire fashion.
As the round closed it appeared the Viloria was in a bit of trouble. But as 3 got underway Viloria landed some good shots of his own and it was obvious the battle was going into the trenches and just when it seemed Priolo was taking charge, Viloria landed a clean overhand right that dropped the Columbian quickly!
The action went back and forth as the technically gifted Priolo and the tough as nails Viloria gave it their all in every second of every round. And then with the tide still going back and forth in the 7th round, Brian Viloria hit Angel Priolo with 2 left hooks to the body followed by a right hand downstairs that stopped the fighter in his tracks and put him down for good at 54 seconds into the 7th.
In a fight that had the crowd at the edge of their seats, the last minute fill in walked away with a new belt, the WBC Latino Super fly title! Judges scores at the end of 7 were split with 2 judges giving Viloria the edge 58-55 & 57-56 and the other judge seeing it in favor of Priolo 57-56.
The second belt given out was the vacant WBC Latino Super
Middleweight Title. In this stanza, Librado Andrade (20-0, 19
KO's) took on tough journeyman Thomas Reid (33-13-1, 13 KO's).
This bout was a little more of a Chess match as Andrade had to
figure out how to land clean punches on the awkward fighter.
Reids defense seemed hard to penetrate for Andrade and for the
first 3 rounds Librado tried different combinations of punches
in search of something that would land on their mark and do some
damage.
By round 4 Andrade had closed the gap and was starting to land more frequently, but at a cost as the sneaky Reid landed some good shots to Andrades chin as well. But as Reid went to the ropes Librado landed a good left up top and it was the beginning of the end from there! Reid tried to move along the ropes but Andrade was in pursuit and was landing combos until the ref had seen enough and brought everything to a halt at 1:52 of round 4.
Andrade , who also owns NABO & NABA Titles, adds another to
his collection and it looks as though 2005 may have some big
things in store for the young Southern California fighter!
