Our Feature Writer & Our New Correspondent Speak With Miguel Cotto!

 

Today Undefeated WBO Jr. Welterweight Champ Miguel Cotto held a teleconference with members of the media and not only was Boxing2005 there, but this time we had not only our Feature Writer Luis "The Beast" Cadiz on the call but our newest addition Lee "From Mexico" Bates chimed in as well.

First up, Luis "The Beast" Cadiz

 

Today was the media conference call for the upcoming 140 pound championship
fight between WBO Champ Miguel Cotto and Muhammad Abdullaev. The fight will
take place in Madison Square Garden on June 11th, one week after the Tszyu vs.
Hatton match and one week before the Gatti vs. Mayweather bout. It seems that
both Showtime and HBO have chosen the month of June to showcase the elite of
the jr. welterweight division, and we the boxing public are the ones who truly
benefit from these match-ups. It solidifies a weight class that already has
anchored itself as one of, if not the, hottest divisions of the moment. Here's

Luis: It's no surprise, because Mayweather doesn't need much to get his mouth
started, that Mayweather said that you are not at his level. Yet his uncle and
trainer, Roger Mayweather, considers you to be a real threat in this division.
What's your take on those comments?

Cotto: Mayweather says that I'm not at his level... the only thing that he is
saying that is true is that I have fought against opponents that he has already
fought. The only difference though is that I have knocked those guys out. As
far as his uncle is concerned, he knows that I pose a great threat to them in
the ring, his words are evidence enough.


Luis: Muhammad Abdullaev fought against you in the Olympics, he beat you in the
first round and went on to win the gold medal. Come June 11th, the Abdullaev
fight, is it going to be professional or personal?

Cotto: You can't get into the ring with personal issues, it blocks you mentally.
You lose focus on your gameplan. What happened in the Olympics, as far as I'm
concerned, that chapter is closed. A new chapter will be written come June
11th.

Introducing Lee "From Mexico" Bates

 

Lee Bates: How are you feeling at 140? Can you continue to make the weight?

Miguel Cotto: Like I’ve said in the past I have no problems making 140 but when my body tells me its time to move up I will. 

Lee Bates: If you win your next fight will you look to fight bigger names or someone other than mandatories?

Miguel Cotto: I feel I fought good opposition but I am looking forward to fighting the bigger names in the 140lb division. 

Lee Bates: Who do you like in the Tszyu vs. Hatton Fight?
 

Miguel Cotto: It will not be and easy fight for either fighter. Hatton will have a lot of supporters there In England, but I think Tszyu’s overall strength and Experience will lead him to a victory.
