Roget’s Thesaurus definition of "Can Of Worms" says it perfectly:
A situation that presents difficulty, uncertainty, or perplexity.

No definition can better describe the state of The Welterweights today.

When the unheralded WBC/IBA Welterweight Champion Carlos Baldomir defeated Arturo Gatti on Saturday night 147 pounders around the globe were all left to ponder, Now what?

WBA Champ Ricky Hatton thought that if Gatti took the fight, he may very well get a shot at "Thunder" to unify their belts...no such luck!

WBO Jr. Welter Champ Miguel Cotto has been itching to move up in weight, but with Arturo's loss, he too must consider plan B...whatever that is.

And then of course you have Antonio Margarito and Floyd Mayweather, both of whom must be chomping at the bit for a crack at the fighter everyone thinks they can beat in Baldomir, even though it's been 7 some years since he last tasted defeat.

If Baldomir picks Margarito for his next fight it will be Bob Arum who gets the last laugh. The only catch is, how do you sell Baldomir and Margarito the boxing public? You certainly can't go PPV with this...can you? And given all that has transpired over the last week, go ahead and assume HBO wants no part of it.

For Floyd, who up until the end of last week had Cory Spinks on the front of his mind, the thought of a possible Baldomir match up might seem pretty attractive. The problem of course is he will once again have to stand in a line with everybody else, a position Mayweather may be getting uncomfortably used to, how humiliating will it be to "Pretty Boy's" ego if he has to compete for Baldomir's attention in the same fashion that he has had to for De La Hoya. Talk about a comedown! As far as PPV goes, it could very well be someone would be willing to roll the dice on this one. The Pound for Pound Champion taking on The Champion spoiler who hasn't lost in 7 years. It just might work! Taking on Floyd would be a retirement type payday for Baldomir, which may be exactly what he wants.

Whatever the case may prove to be, Baldomir and his people should expect to hear the phone ringing off the hook, if it isn't already.

It will be all good for the winner of The Baldomir Lottery, but for the loser, it's back to the pain and agony of trying to figure out where to go from here.

With that said, the real pain and agony could very well come if Margarito gets the fight with Baldomir and then beats him.

How will it taste if the guy Floyd has been ducking for so long gets revenge on Floyd by taking away his "easy" little payday?
