Danger In The Danger Zone

A scuffle broke out between "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga on the set of a television commercial shoot in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse today.  Both fighters exchanged negative comments between takes while being asked to repeatedly walk towards each other and participate in a stare down.  Eventually the trash-talking escalated to the point where shoving began and both boxers had to be restrained.  It will be interesting to see what transpires on this week's media tour to kick off the promotion for their May 6 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and on HBO Pay-Per-View.  The tour will start on Tuesday in Los Angeles, make two stops in Houston and Chicago on Wednesday, and conclude on Thursday in New York.

Oscar DeLaHoya and Ricardo Mayorga came close to blows today at their Los Angeles Press Conference to promote their May 6th battle entitled “Danger Zone”.

Mayorga: “I’m going to make you my b****!”

DeLaHoya: “Im going to knock you out! Mark my words!”

Not only did Mayorga and DeLaHoya have words, but Floyd Mayweather Sr. had a few choice words for Ricardo as well,

so Stay Turned as we will be bringing you FULL VIDEO of what took place including the minor scuffle that was started when Mayorga, for the second time, put his hands on DeLaHoya.

DANGER ZONE
Beverly Hills Press Conference Almost Gets Out Of Control - Video

Hard hats where handed out at the door for the media in attendance, and for a brief moment it looked as though the protective gear was going to be needed. As Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga met on the podium to announce their plans to meet in the ring on May 6th at The MGM in Las Vegas it was clear the two have a mutual disrespect for one another, and when Mayorga shoved Oscar it looked as though the two were going to go out it right there and then. But cooler heads prevailed and separated the foes before any significant damage could be done.

The Los Angeles press conference was the start of a four city tour to promote their upcoming battle for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship bout. One has to wonder how these two are going to make it through the next few days of promotion given the hostility we saw on display on Tuesday.

If this is a sneak preview of things to come then everyone should expect fireworks in the ring that night and it should not be missed.

Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased at The MGM box office and at all Tickmaster locationsor by calling Ticketmaster at 702-474-4000 or by logging on to www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com  Prices range from $1250 -$150.  The bout will be presented by Golden Boy Promotions and televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Today in New York the Danger Zone press tour came to it's conclusion today with it's final stop in New York city. The 3 day 4 city tour started off with a bang and I am sure everyone is glad that it's over now. The injury report: Don King gets shoved off the stage and suffers a strained back, but other than that everyone came out unharmed although there was plenty of pushing and shoving going on.

All that's left now is for Oscar and Ricardo to step into the ring on May 6th......

The "circus" had made prior stops in Los Angeles and Chicago, before it’s grand finale in New York.

The scenario was the same; the highly anticipated return to the ring of  "The Golden Boy", De La Hoya, who will be ending a 20 month hiatus with his challenge for Mayorga’s title.  Click Here For Full Report By Mike Indri

Ricardo ‘El Matador’ Mayorga: More Than Just Talk?
Revealing Analysis of WBC Super Welterweight Champion’s Last Eight Contests

MANAGUA, Nicaragua-One could dismiss as idle chatter the non-stop tirades made by World Boxing Council 154-pound champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga against “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya at media tour stops in Beverly Hills, Houston, Chicago and New York last week promoting their May 6 meeting at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, but a check of the record indicates Mayorga often backs up his trash talk with wins.

In his last eight appearances the Nicaraguan bomber faced five reigning world champions, two former world champions and a world-ranked fighter. His opponents had a combined record of 244-9-3 going into those contests, and Mayorga emerged with five wins, two losses and one match that was ruled no contest.

Mayorga will be fighting one of the most popular boxers in history on May 6,

he is taking this fight seriously.

Mayorga started his training here on Feb. 23 at the new Fight Club gym.  The
first interval of training began with a 3-mile morning jog each day at 7
a.m.  After his jog, El Matador eats breakfast and takes a nap.

  6 Days Until "Danger Zone"
Flying from his Puerto Rican-based home and training camp, the “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya touched down at Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles earlier this evening to begin the final week of preparation for his championship mega-bout against Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 6.   This world championship match is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Don King Productions and will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

“I had a tremendous training camp.  Everything went so well and I feel very comfortable and very fit at 154 pounds.”

De La Hoya will stay in Los Angeles to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Monday before heading to Las Vegas where he will make his grand arrival at the MGM Grand Tuesday morning.

Ratner Denies Golden Boys Request
Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com spoke directly with Marc Ratner of The Nevada State Athletic Commission and he told us that Mayorga cornernman, Stacey McKinley, will not be barred from working the corner of Ricardo Mayorga this Saturday night.

Golden Boy asked for a meeting to discuss the presence of McKinley who was suspended in 2004 for using ammonia smelling salts to revive his fighter Tito Mendoza during his loss to Librado Andrade.

"We spoke to the California Commission, and they told us that Mr. McKinley had paid his fine and served out his suspension, he did everything he was supposed to do. There is no reason why he will not be allowed to work Mayorga's corner on Sayurday night," said Ratner.

Ratner informed us that he has already notified both parties as to the commissions ruling.

Although the request was denied, it's pretty clear that Golden Boy is firing back at Mayorga who has taken plenty of cheap shots during events leading up to the fight, and this request, although denied, is sure to not sit well in the mind of the feisty Nicaraguan.

  Fighters Predict DeLaHoya vs. Mayorga
FELIX “TITO” TRINIDAD—Three-time World Champion (welterweight, junior middleweight & middleweight) with one of the highest knockout percentages in
boxing history at 81%.
PREDICTION—DE LA HOYA, DECISION
VIEW— "It's going to be a really hard fight between the two fighters.  De La Hoya hasn't fought in a long time, but should dominate based upon his speed and intelligence in the ring.  Oscar should win by decision, and leave the ring while he's on top."

VERNON FORREST—Former Undisputed Welterweight Champion who lost twice to Mayorga
PREDICTIONDE LA HOYA, DECISION WIN OR LATE ROUND STOPPAGE
VIEW—“Mayorga is very dangerous early.  But De La Hoya is an exceptional boxer so he should be able to avoid trouble by staying away in the early rounds.  On the other hand, De La Hoya tends to fade in the later rounds so he can’t wait too long to begin his own attack.  I also think De La Hoya’s chin is highly underrated.  He can take it.  So if he has to mix it up, expect him to weather any storm and either stop Mayorga late or get the decision.”  Click Here For More

Could This Be Oscar's Last Bout?
The Golden Boy made an appearance with Jay Leno on Monday night to discuss his upcoming bout with Ricardo Mayorga this Saturday at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The most interesting quote of the evening came when Leno asked Oscar what he would do if he lost this fight to Mayorga. Without hesitation De La Hoya said,"If I lose this fight, then I retire! If I lose this fight I hang up the gloves and focus on other things!"

A candid and honest response from Oscar who already has a September 16th farewell bout in the works.

  Ringside LA With Johnny Ortiz:
"The Golden Boy" Faces "El Matador" AKA "The Malevolent One"

On May 6, 2006, Oscar De La Hoya will enter the “Danger Zone” to challenge Ricardo Mayorga for his WBC Jr. Middleweight title at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.  This is a fight that has ignited the fire within the fight fan, a fight that pits the normally good-natured Oscar De La Hoya against an offensive, beer drinking, cigarette smoking, professional amateur.  Mayorga is a very hard puncher, I will give him that, but his cover was blown when he nailed Vernon Forrest with one of his haymakers from left field in their first fight.  In the rematch, Vernon was ready for the Mayorga ambush, although after twelve rounds, Ricardo was on the receiving end of a majority decision (112-114, 115-114, 114-114).  I had Vernon winning the fight; Vernon would have won the fight going away if he hadn’t fought so cautiously through the first four rounds.  In his last fight on August 13, 2005, Mayorga had to go the twelve round distance in winning the vacant WBC Jr.Middleweight crown against household name Michele Piccirillo.

Champion Ricardo Mayorga & Challenger Oscar De La Hoya arrived in Vegas today and met with fans as they made their way through the MGM Grand Hotel which is where they will be meeting in the ring this Saturday night in the Danger Zone.

  4 Days Until "Danger Zone"

LAS VEGAS—"The Golden Boy" Oscar de la Hoya arrived at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to a throng of fans less than one hour before champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga, who was celebrated upon his entrance as well.  Both fighters looked confident and fit as they made their way thru the lobby and shared brief comments before heading to their respective suites.

"The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya—"It's great to be back at the MGM and particularly this time when I am the one who's fighting.   The hotel looks fantastic and to see all these people here shows how excited they are about Saturday night too.   It's going to be a great fight and I am so ready to get back in the ring."

"Mayorga made the biggest mistake of his life by talking the way he has from the beginning of this promotion.   He definitely got under my skin but he certainly did not get in my head.   He doesn't realize that he's made it worse for himself and on Saturday night he going to know what I am talking about."

World Boxing Council super welterweight champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga showed just as much confidence as he entered the makeshift ring in the hotel lobby and climb atop the MGM Grand lion.

"I left my training chickens in Miami because I don't need them anymore.  The real chicken is already here.   I know he's horrified and nervous with everything I have said to him throughout this promotion.   What he should know is that I meant everything I said and it's only going to get worse for him Saturday night."

Mayorga: "Don't Be Surprised If I Don't Show Up In The Ring Saturday Night

Ricardo Mayorga showed up extremely late at the final press conference today, obviously agitated when he reached the podium because of money issues and threatened to pull out of the fight Saturday. Mayorga warned the press: "Dont be surprised if I don't show up in the ring Saturday night if they don't come up with some more money."

Then a member of the press shouted: "So you're the 'chicken' then?"

Mayorga yelled back: "Im not chicken, you guys aren't the ones paying me."

By now you know, Ricardo Mayorga is making demands for 8 million dollars instead of the 2 million on his signed contract. The agitation level is growing and there are still 3 days before the fight is supposed to take place.

Everything that went down today is more of the theatrics and hype that has surrounded this very high profile championship fight.

From Mayorga presenting Oscar a dress to wear into the ring on Saturday night, to his grabbing the microphone when everything was over and announcing he may not show up come Saturday night if he doesn't get compensated....well, it's all just a part of everything we come to expect from Danger Zone

"Danger Zone" Undercard Quotes - Ouma, Rubio...

Only days away from Saturday's epic bout between Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View, early indications are that the undercard bouts on the 'Danger Zone' card are going to be just as explosive as the main event.

In the main co-feature, exciting Kassim 'The Dream' Ouma (23-2-1, 15 KOs), the former world junior middleweight champion, will try to move one step closer to regaining his crown when he squares off against perhaps the hardest puncher he has ever faced, Mexican knockout artist Marco Antonio Rubio (32-2-1, 29 KOs).

“The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya to defend his title at the MGM Grand

make his announcement.
“I have decided to fight,” Mayorga said.  "I’m a man and I will defend my

The Nicaraguan bomber added emphatically:  “Look out.  I’m going to knock
Oscar out in less than six rounds.”

Oscar Throws A Cloud Over His Farewell Plans
Written By Nat Gottlieb & William Trillo
Photo: Bret "The Threat" Newton

Oscar De La Hoya hasn't even been hit with a roundhouse right hand from Ricardo Mayorga, but this week he's sounded a bit punchy.

For months he's been saying that he wants to go out with style and a bang, that he has huge plans for a farewell fight in September that would solidify his place in boxing lore. But on Monday's "Tonight" show when asked by host Jay Leno what would happen if he lost to Mayorga on Saturday night, Oscar said, "If I lose this fight, then I retire! If I lose this fight I hang up the gloves and focus on other things!"

Say what? Er, that's not exactly what you've had the media cranking out overtime for the last several months. What's up, Oscar? Is this now become a do or die fight, instead of a prep for a September farewell? Are you saying you won't fight Pretty Boy in September if you lose? Do you even know what your plans are? Or are you just thinking out loud on your feet?

We're genuinely confused. For months there was going to be two more fights then adios muchachos, and then at the last minute now you're talking like this may be the last one if Mayorga becomes a party pooper.

From Winky Wright we could expect this degree of flakiness, but Oscar, you're the businessman with a multi-million dollar promotion business. You're the one with a good head on your shoulders.

It'd sure be nice to tune in to your fight Saturday night knowing what's at stake. But Oscar, you have left your fans hanging at the last moment. For a promoter who likes to orchestrate a good fight scenario,  you apparently are having trouble organizing your own bout.

 But...
Irregardless of whether this is or is not Oscar's last fight,

 "Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow..."

Whether Oscar De La Hoya beats Ricardo Mayorga Saturday night, by the Golden Boy's own admission his illustrious career is winding down. It is a career that began in glory with a Gold Medal in the 1992 Olympics, and would see him go on to win world titles in 6 weight divisions and fight the best boxers of his generation.

DeLaHoya Gives Mayorga Beating Of A Lifetime
Puts Mayorga Down In 1st, & Knocks Him Out In 6th

Oscar DeLaHoya put on an absolute show and beat down of Ricardo Mayorga who's only moments in the fights were few. Oscar came right out and put Mayorga down in the opening round with one of the biggest left hooks he's ever thrown. Mayorga never saw it and was flat on his back and dazed. DeLaHoya continued his easy domination, despite a few moments he let up and Mayorga was able to land some clean shots where Oscar was able to take them no problem. In the 6th, DeLaHoya came out in destruction mode and put an absolute beating on Mayorga with a combination of punches that never seemed to end that put Mayorga in staggering mode into the ropes, then finally to his knees. Back up off the canvas, Jay Nady looked closely and Ricardo didn't look as if he really wanted to continue, but his courage wouldn't let him give up and Oscar came in and began to demolish Mayorga with shots from all over, giving Mayorga the beat down of a life time and Jay Nady had no choice but to come in and stop the bout at 1:25 of the 6th.

Ouma Survives 1st Round Knockdown To Win Split

Kassim Ouma, now  24-2-1 with 15 KO's, survived a 1st round knockdown at the hands of Marco Antonio Rubio to come back and win a tough fought 12 rounds split decision. Despite Rubio being game, it was pretty clear Ouma won pretty much every round after, yet judges Dalby Shirly oddly had a score of 114-113 for Rubio. What fight was he watching? 117-110 and 116-111 were the other two scores that represented the Ouma win. Rubio falls to 33-3, 1 with 30 KO's.

Joan Guzman, now 25-0 with 17 KO's, put on a dazzling and clinical performance over Javier Juaregui through 10 rounds by scores of 100-90 on two cards and 99 to 91 on the third. Juaregui falls to 51-13-2 with 35 KO's.

In a four round attraction, Jorge Paez Jr. upped his record to 8-0 with 7 KO's with a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Lowell Brownfield. Peaz sported similar showboating as his father and it cost him in the 4th round when Brownfield was able to land a clean left hand that stopped Paez from goofing off. Scores were 39 to 37 and 40 to 36 on two cards. Saturday night was a big one for the Golden Boy Promotions team at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in addition to the stirring win by President Oscar De La Hoya over Ricardo Mayorga, five other fighters from the GBP team emerged victorious in their bouts.

Junior middleweight star Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma, who is co-promoted by Russell Peltz, survived a first round knockdown to earn a hard fought split decision over Marco Antonio Rubio in a bruising 12 round bout that saw both men give and take some hellacious bombs without giving in.

Two recent signees who are co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Sycuan Ringside Promotions, junior lightweight Joan Guzman and junior welterweight Jorge Paez Jr., made impressive debuts with GBP by outpointing Javier Jauregui and Lowell Brownfield, respectively, in undercard bouts which were also televised by HBO Pay-Per-View.

2004 US Olympian Rock Allen moved to 7-0 with 5 KOs with a six round decision win over Juan Hernandez, and Puerto Rican super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo improved to 9-0 with 5 KOs by decisioning Torrence Daniels over eight rounds.

And even though GBP fighters Rubio, Jauregui, and Aaron Garcia fell short in their bouts tonight, Golden Boy Promotions congratulates all our warriors, who – win or lose – always gave their best.

Ring rust?  What ring rust?  In his first fight in 20 months, ‘The Golden Boy’, Oscar De La Hoya showed that he was better than ever, impressively stopping Ricardo Mayorga in six dominating rounds to win the WBC junior middleweight championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The end came at 1:25 of the sixth frame as De La Hoya scored his third knockdown of the fight, which was televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.

For De La Hoya, who improves to 38-4 with 30 knockouts, the win earned him an amazing ninth world title, spanning every division from junior lightweight to middleweight, and it was his 19th victory and 12th knockout in 23 championship fights.  And even more impressive is that after close to 14 years in the pro boxing game, Oscar is still golden.

Golden Boy Promotions congratulates our president and our champion, Oscar De La Hoya.
