GATORADE SQUABBLE Sulaiman To Oscar: Clean Up Your Act
Sulaiman reminded us it was back in 2002 The WBC implemented the use of isotonic drinks on the recommendation of our WBC Medical Board, and it has been well accepted in the world with many boxers who have voluntarily taken it.
In the closing of the letter Jose went on and blasted Golden Boy Promotions for having a court of law stop Fernando Vargas from using any isotonic drinks in his corner on Saturday night saying, "Boxing might be coming to the end of the road when we take the sport to court for judges to care about legalities instead of the concern and care of saving lives."
In a follow up letter written exclusively to Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com, Sulaiman added this to the "sticky" issue presented by De La Hoya and his team;
…care, cleanliness and safety actions in the corner is what counts if you have good corner men, ,,,,,,,,,, if not ,,,,,,, they should learn ; they are corner men because they should know how exactly to do the best for a boxer. A boxer comes to box ,,,, corner men to keep them from anything that threatens or bothers boxers.
In other words Golden Boy, clean up your act and quit trying pull power plays every time you think your opponent might somehow be gaining a slight edge. Let the fighters fight, and let the corner men do their jobs, which means keeping their guy in the best condition in between rounds and giving him every legal chance to recoup, such as allowing him to use the isotonic drinks. And if by some chance some if it gets spilled , wipe it up, seems pretty simple.
Mr. Sulaiman then went on to tell us;
Mr. Trillo ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I do not know if what I do is seen as the right thing to do or not,,,,,,,,,,,,, I do not know if I will be criticized ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but I will never stop myself from doing what I believe that is right, especially if it is for the safety of boxing when I have the WBC´s medical support behind us. Boxing receives many low blows and rocks thrown at it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, there is a time when boxing people should come forward in a clean, ethical and respectful way to defend it.
Translated: the crap you pulled this last week was underhanded and sneaky at best and apparently Jose thinks you did it for all the wrong reasons, getting into the head or under the skin of the Vargas camp being at the top of that list.
As it turns out, you probably could have let Fernando drink that Rockstar energy drink that sponsored this whole affair and it wouldn’t have made a bit of a difference either.
These little mind games that you played beforehand where unnecessary at best and Jose is right….how about a little more respect and a few less rocks?
The best way to clean up this sticky mess Sulaiman refers to would be by starting with a mop session in your own untidy house!
Below is a press release and letter sent to Boxing2006 by Mr. Sulaiman
WBC Press Release; WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS
July 17, 2006 - Mexico City. From WBC President Jose Sulaiman:
On behalf of the World Boxing Council, I give absolute support and commendment to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the implementation of a rule to allow isotonic liquids for boxers during the resting periods.
Fatigue has been reported by the WBC Medical Advisory Board to be one of the most dangerous conditions for boxers, and dehydration causes fatigue. In addition to fatigue, dehydration also causes weakness, slowness of reflexes, less punching power, and slowness of movement around the ring, but what is even worse, it may cause brain dehydration and thus, a brain hemorrhage.
The dehydration of boxers during training and weight reduction, including the making of the official weight, the great physical efforts and even the extreme heat by the TV lighting in the ring cannot be overlooked; if we add the fact that usually most boxers don’t drink water and just wet their mouths in an unexplainable tradition of cornermen, their physical condition deteriorates after each round, during which rehydration is absolutely necessary, and which water alone cannot do. Isotonic drinks do rehydrate and are very important in the later rounds.
Isotonic liquid is not a drug; it is not a stimulant. To the contrary, isotonic drinks, in addition to water, are indeed a very important rehydration element. Safety in boxing is the name of the game, and it is the obligation of boxing institutions to give their very best for safety, just as the NSAC is doing with their new safety rule.
The WBC implemented the use of isotonic drinks in the year 2002 on the recommendation of our WBC Medical Board, and it has been well accepted in the world with many boxers who have voluntarily taken it, and who highly recommend it; rehydration is of extreme importance in boxing, while dehydration is the mortal enemy of boxers and all other athletes.
As a final comment, professional boxing is, without a doubt, one of the most physically demanding sports, even more than the MLB, NFL, NBA, FIFA in soccer, where all athletes use isotonic drinks. So, why not in boxing?
After the fight, the WBC was shocked to learn that a judge stopped this safety rule from taking effect for the Mosley-Vargas match. Boxing might be coming to the end of the road when we take the sport to court for judges to care about legalities instead of the concern and care of saving lives. We should let the courts take care of the law, but no one else but the boxing institutions should care about safety and saving lives, if we don’t want boxing to die within the following 50 years.
Sulaiman Letter; Thank you for your thoughts ; care, cleanliness and safety actions in the corner is what counts if you have good corner men, ,,,,,,,,,, if not ,,,,,,, they should learn ; they are corner men because they should know how exactly to do the best for a boxer. A boxer comes to box ,,,, corner men to keep them from anything that threatens or bothers boxers. What is really important is the extreme dehydration to which boxers are subjected to and the serious danger that it throws on a human being ; the lack of doing anything to help them to avoid a serious accident is not acceptable being in the 21st century . Ball player, basketball players , soccer players, football , etc, etc, ,,,,, they ALL, no Exceptions, use isotonic drinks because it is a great help against dehydration ,,,,,, pitchers , fielders,,,,,, must do something to be able to throw the ball without a bother ,,,,,,,,,,, and so does every athlete,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, why not boxers if they protect themselves against the stickiness as all other athletes do . The only thing for which boxing commissions and the WBC should be careful is that those drinks should be certified and controlled , not any other drink but isotonic drinks. Mr. Trillo ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I do not know if what I do is seen as the right thing to do or not,,,,,,,,,,,,, I do not know if I will be critized ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but I will never stop myself from doing what I believe that is right, specially if it is for the safety of boxing when I Have the WBC´s medical support behind us. Boxing receives many low blows and rocks thrown at it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, there is a time when boxing people should come forward in a clean, ethical and respectful way to defend it, as one of the very few friendly hands in the world extended for the benefit of the poor of the world, please accept my respectful regards ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, José Sulaimán
