Is Mission Impossible

Last week during some back and forth exchanges through the media, Oscar De La Hoya said of a proposed match up with Tito Trinidad, "Well if he wants to fight at 160, sure, I'll come in at 152, 153. I'll have the speed....If he wants to go in at 160 and be slow and sluggish, hey, better for me right?"

Apparently not!

Under the camouflage of his own high profile PPV promotion this weekend, Oscar was once again quoted by the Puerto Rican press saying, “I cannot make that weight. I am not a natural middleweight. He (Trinidad) is and he wants the fight at 160."

Oscar not only answered his own question, but pretty much confirmed everything Don Felix Trinidad told Boxing2006 in an exclusive interview last week. Said Papa Trinidad: “This is simply one of Oscar’s promotional ploys. He’s playing up the Mayweather fight and all of a sudden he puts “Tito” into the picture. My son is not anyone’s negotiating tool. We stopped him in his tracks by calling him what he is and then we give him our conditions for stepping into the ring again a second time. If he doesn't accept…well then, he doesn't want to fight and that’s what we have said all along.”

Oscar not only isn't ready to accept the 160 pound condition, but according to the Puerto Rican paper "Nuevo Dia", Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaeffer commented that Trinidad is asking for 60 percent of the money from the fight, leaving a mere 40 percent for Oscar.

Of the two demands, the $$$ seems to be the greater obstacle.

So what it boils down to is the simple fact that Oscar is not prepared to meet Trinidad’s demands, although it is Tito who came out victorious in their only meeting and certainly should have the upper hand in negotiations.

Not to be discounted is the "coward" shot Tito took at Oscar while discussing the fact that Oscar has never been willing to accept the 6 time offer, “That was a low blow. It surprised me that a boxer calls me cowardly. That was a lack of respect that I did not accept”, said Oscar.

The question now is whether or not the "Tito Smoke Screen" is now laid to rest or if when negotiations get rough with "The Pretty Boy" if Oscar will once again feed another “Trinidad Sandwich” to a bunch of under nourished and hand picked media, who are happy to eat off Oscar's table and then regurgitate his baloney as fact to an unsuspecting boxing public.
