Universal Promotions "Night Of Revenge"

Story & Photos By Luis "The Beast" Cadiz

As 2006 comes to a close, Universal Promotions decided to finish off the year with a bang. This local promotional company has offered boxing fans evenly matched bouts where up and coming prospects have been able to display their talents and build a fan base in the process. This particular event, which was held in the Antonio R. Barceló Coliseum in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, consisted of 11 bouts, 6 of which were televised. Even though it’s the month of December, the time of gift giving and receiving, none of the boxers on the card received a gift. Each and every one of them had to “give and take” a considerable amount of punishment to get their decisions.

Here’s the “list” of the results:

12 rounds: Regional WBC and WBA 112 pound titles

José “Carita” López (33-7-2, 29 KOs) vs. Juan Alberto Rosas (25-0, 24 KOs)

For the first three rounds, Jose “Carita” Lopez and Juan Alberto Rosas were very busy. “Carita” seemed to get the better half of the exchanges, but Rosas was relentless in the pursuit of his prey. Still chasing Lopez in the 4th round, Rosas increased his punch output and connected some clean left hooks and right crosses to his opponent’s anatomy.

After the 4th round, the ring announcer read the judge’s scorecards; all three judges had Jose “Carita” Lopez ahead. The Mexican didn’t like what he heard so he increased his violent stalking of the Puerto Rican defending regional champ. But this opened Rosas to error and Lopez capitalized on this by clobbering him with rights to the head in the 5th and 6th.

In the 7th, Rosas had his best round, connecting Lopez with body rattling rights to the head. After reading the cards a second time, “Carita” was still ahead on two of the judge’s scorecards, the other had it a draw. In the 9th round, Juan Alberto Rosas launched one of the most vicious, violent and mal intentioned body attacks that I have seen, he was determined to breakdown Jose “Carita” Lopez.

Lopez fought back effectively in the 10th. Things got red for the Mexican challenger, as an accidental head butt opened a gash on his hairline. The blood was flowing freely down his face in the 11th. Rosas, realizing that the fight was too close to call, came out to try and finish the fight in the 12th. “Carita” weathered the onslaught, moved and boxed, and handed Rosas his first professional loss. Jose “Carita” Lopez walked away with a majority decision win and improves to 34-7-2 with 29 KOs.

10 rounds: Regional WBC and WBA 122 pound titles

Jonathan Oquendo (11-0, 6 KOs) vs. Alejandro Montiel (51-8, 30 KOs)

On paper, it looked like an interesting match-up. The young undefeated prospect taking on the well experienced, in this case vastly experienced, veteran. In reality, it only took 1min: 50 sec of the very first round to see that Jonathan Oquendo, Golden Boy’s first local talent, was way too superior. Oquendo pummeled Montiel mercilessly in a corner and left his mark, not only on Montiel’s anatomy, on the 122 pound weight division. He has a bright future ahead of him and eventually he may wind up facing another highly regarded and respected local prospect that goes by the name of Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez (14-0, 12 KOs). Time will tell.

6 rounds: 110 pounds

Cesar Seda Jr. (4-0) vs. Miguel “Samurai” Del Valle (8-13)

Do not be fooled by Miguel “Samurai” Del Valle’s record, he’s an awkward opponent to face in the ring. He has faced the likes of Hugo Cazeres, WBO 108 pound champ, and Omar “Pastor” Soto, hot 105 pound prospect, going the distant with both. He even floored Hugo Cazeres in the ninth round of their match-up. Del Valle will always be considered a test. That was his job in this bout, to test Cesar Seda Jr. Well he did and when both fighters had fierce exchanges, Seda Jr. would get the upper hand. Cesar Seda Jr. improves to 5-0 with a unanimous decision win.

4 rounds: 151 pounds

Héctor Rosario (3-1) vs. Joseph De los Santos (2-2-1)

The first televised bout of the evening had Hector Rosario and Joseph De los Santos fighting to a draw. This had the public in an uproar because it was the third draw of the evening. Rosario was the favorite when he entered the ring, but the majority of the public present favored De los Santos after the hard fought 4 rounder. No rematch was mentioned afterwards.

6 rounds: 137 pounds

Javier Pérez (5-1) vs. Cesil Martínez (3-3)

Javier Perez decided to take it upon himself and make the public forget about the previous bout. With a crushing left hook to the face, he floored Cesil Martinez within 2min: 26sec of the very first round. Perez gave the event its first televised KO win of the evening. The public was now pumped.

4 rounds: 122 pounds

Vitiño Fonseca (6-0) vs. Edwin Torres (2-0-1)

Vitiño Fonseca decided to follow suit and not let the public down. He maintained their adrenaline rush with an explosive and overpowering performance that lasted 1min: 13sec of the first round. A straight right to the face of Edwin Torres ended the hostilities. Vitiño Fonseca is another young talent to watch in the 122 pound weight division.

Non-televised action:

4 rounds: 141 pounds

Rafael DeJesus (0-1) vs. Josean Escalera (0-1)

Someone’s “0” had to go; in this case it means that they needed a win. Josean Escalera gets his first unanimous decision win.

4 rounds: 118 pounds

Angel Rios Panetto (Pro-Debut) vs. Alexis Adorno (Pro-Debut)

Here we have two debutants who didn’t get the win; they wound up with a draw.

4 rounds: 130 pounds

Fernando Torres (Pro-Debut) vs. Orlando Vázquez (Pro-Debut)

Here we have another pair of debutantes fighting, only this time with a different outcome. Fernando Torres gets his pro-career off on the right foot with a unanimous decision win.

4 rounds: 131 pounds

Ramesis Gil (2-0-1) vs. Andres Navarro (1-2)

This was one of the best 4 round bouts that I have seen in a while. They pounded on each other as if though there were no tomorrow. This one had the public on its feet since the opening bell. They walked away with a draw. The rematch is being talked about for next year, but six rounds instead of four.

4 rounds: 132 pounds

Carlos Claudio (5-0) vs. José González Torres (0-2-1)

Carlos Claudio gave the event its first TKO win of the evening in the second round, improving to 6 and 0.

As for me, Luis “The Beast” Cadiz, I will enjoy the holidays with my family and friends. Next year’s events promise to be better than this year and, God willing, I will be there to cover them and keep all readers up to date. So to all Boxing2006, and future Pound4Pound.com readers, may you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

God Bless
