FELIX TRINIDAD SR.
BLASTS OSCAR
FOR TRYING BACKDOOR PLAY WITH SON Written By Luis "The Beast" Cadiz Sr. Foto Folly: Bret "The Threat" Newton
In a truly EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com, Felix Trinidad's father, trainer and manager made a rare statement to the media, in this case to our crack Puerto Rico-based Luis Cadiz Sr. You will not read this anywhere else, and as always, it's not locked to members only or any nonsense thereof, it is free! With all the smoke blowing from Oscar De La Hoya about fighting Felix Trinidad, first the boxer responded by ridiculing Oscar, now his father, pumped up the volume: Luis “The Beast” Cadiz: Oscar said recently that he would, “…love to sit down with him and pick his brain on what he wants to do instead of talking to somebody else.” What do you make of this comment?
Don Felix: “He’s jumping channels because he knows what he has to do and who he has to get in contact with. If it were up to him, he would like to get “Tito” alone and negotiate on his own terms. But he should remember that I have been in “Tito’s” corner his entire career as trainer and manager and I will continue to have my son’s back…and Don King has been his promoter. If he dealt with King on the Mayorga fight, why can't he do it now? I mean, if he really wants the fight, he will do what is necessary to get it done.”
L.C.: This supposed “somebody else” seems to be more of an obstacle than a facilitator.
Don Felix: “He can't avoid dealing with Don King and as I said before, he did so with the Mayorga fight. He definitely can't push me to the side because no one looks after the best interest of “Tito” better than me, his father. He may see me as an obstacle; he has categorized me as that before. But we are and we will always be a solid team.”
L.C.: What is needed to get this fight done?
Don Felix: “We said it once and we have said it again, that he accept our terms… the weight, the winnings…basically the same thing we have offered the past six times.
L.C.: Why do you think Oscar has caused all of this hype?
Don Felix: “This is simply one of Oscar’s promotional ploys. He’s playing up the Mayweather fight and all of a sudden he puts “Tito” into the picture. My son is not anyone’s negotiating tool. We stopped him in his tracks by calling him what he is and then we give him our conditions for stepping into the ring again a second time. If he doesn't accept…well then, he doesn't want to fight and that’s what we have said all along.”
L.C.: How do you see the reaction on the island?
Don Felix: “This subject will always be a passionate one here on the island. “Tito” has what Oscar lacks, the love and respect of the people. No matter where “Tito” goes here, people show him how much he is cared for. De la Hoya doesn’t have that and he probably never will. On the island, “Tito” is “Tito” and Oscar will always be the man who lost to him.”
Now that the ball is in De la Hoya’s court, what will be his next move? The Trinidad’s are clear on what has to be done, it now becomes a put up or shut up situation for Oscar. My recommendation: don't disturb the sleeping giant; let him enjoy his retirement in peace. Accept that loss and move on with your career. And always remember, though you live on the island, are married to a beautiful native (Millie Corretjer) and boricua blood pumps through your son’s veins… Puerto Rico will always be “Tito” country.
Stay tuned to Boxing2006…
Good bye and God Bless
