Mayweather vs. Hatton Round By Round

By Robert Jones

After just a so-so three fight undercard, it's finally time for the main event. The Ricky Hatton fans found a way to entertain themselves throughout the undercard by singing and chanting. Whenever either of the two fighters were shown on the big screen inside the arena it quickly became apparent that nearly 100 percent of the fans are Hatton supporters. While that's somewhat impressive considering Las Vegas is Floyd Mayweather Jr. now calls home, he

Round 1: A clinch starts off the fight - hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. Mayweather lands a quick left hook about 45 seconds in. Hatton is pouring on the pressure. Mayweather wobbles backwards from a punch, barely staying on his feet from a quick inside punch. With every movement Hatton makes the crowd go crazy. Mayweather is warned for hitting behind the head. Mayweather lands back to back straight right hands with about 10 seconds to go in the round.

Round 2: Hatton starts round two with a lunging left hook that connects. Referee Joe Cortez warns both fighters for some illegal hitting on clinches by both of them. Floyd lands a straight right hand, and then he initiates a clinch. Mayweather is now warned for hitting Hatton behind the head. Cortez has his hands full tonight. Another timeout for Cortez. He tells them they are doing too much "dirty fighting." While Hatton has the reputation of holding, it is Mayweather doing all the clinching at this point. Tough round to score because of all the pauses in action. I'll take Mayweather for his clean punches earlier in the round.

Round to Mayweather

Round 3: Cortez now warns Hatton for holding. Pretty dirty fight to this point, it will be interesting to see if Mayweather can keep his cool. Mayweather lands a right with his back to the rope. To this point he is only throwing one punch at a time, but when he does he is usually landing. Mayweather throws a lead right hand, and it causes a gash of Hatton's eye. I take Mayweather because of the few blows he landed, but the judges could easily be rewarding the aggression of Hatton.

Round 4: The cut looks under control for now, but being so early in the fight it will most likely cause a problem. Harold Lederman has the fight 2-1 in favor of Hatton at this point. Hatton lands some nice body blows with Mayweather leaning in the corner. Mayweather lands a one-two as Hatton comes forward, but Hatton keeps coming forward. Another two right hands land for Mayweather, and Hatton looks dazed for just a split second. The blood is again visible after those shots. Mayweather begins to open up a bit, and Hatton has slowed down just a bit. Easiest round to score of the fight, in my opinion.

Round to Mayweather

Round 5: Hatton continues to try to bully Mayweather into the ropes in an attempt to hit Mayweather anywhere he can. Mayweather lands another straight right. The first half of this round has taken place in one corner, with Hatton controlling the action a bit. The action goes to the middle of the ring, but quickly goes back to the ropes. Cortez warns Mayweather for using an elbow.

Round to Hatton

Round 6: Action starts off in the center of the ring. Left hook lands for Mayweather as Hatton comes in. Hatton is penalized a point for taking a shot at the back of Mayweather's head. Hatton says Mayweather turned his back, but in my opinion Hatton clearly took a shot at hitting Mayweather in the back of the head. Hatton responds by coming forward as usual, but this time at an even faster pace. The fight is getting uglier by the minute, which favors Hatton. I think Hatton drew the round even.

Even Round

Round 7: Lederman has Hatton ahead by one point at this juncture. On the replay of the point deduction, Hatton didn't land on the back of Mayweather's head, but he seemed to take a shot at hitting him. Lots of in fighting the first half minute of the round with neither fighter taking an advantage. Mayweather attempts a double left hook, landing the first one. Left hook by Mayweather at the ten second count, but he missed three punches to end the round. A right hand at the end of the round by Mayweather may have inched it in his favor

Round 8: Mayweather opens up to start the round, landing a series of right hands to the head and body. Hatton lands a right over the top, with Mayweather's back once again on the ropes, which favors Hatton. Left hook by Mayweather as Hatton came in. Mayweather rocks Hatton's head back with a straight right. Hatton is a bit hurt with 30 seconds left in the round. Hatton returns fire with a series of body shots, but easy round for Mayweather.

Round 9: Hatton comes right back with the aggression following the much needed minute break. Mayweather lands three jabs as Hatton tries to find his way back in. Hatton seems to be losing some of the effectiveness he had in the early rounds. The crowd tries to pump their hero back up, but Mayweather has found a home with the jab. Hatton's work rate has slowed down. Mayweather's round due to landing just about everything he threw that round.

Round to Mayweather

Round 10: Lederman now has Mayweather up 86-84, with Mayweather sweeping the last three rounds due to clean punching. Big left hook sends Hatton to the canvas hard. Hatton stays on his knee to the count of eight. Hatton needs to hold on to get through the final 1:45. Hatton falls to the canvas for the second time, and Cortez calls the fight off. The second and final knockdown was caused by a pair of left hooks to the temple.
