Champions and boxing legends Israel Vazquez, Jorge Paez,
Bobby Chacon, Carlos Palomino and Vince Phillips
converged on the Maywood Activity Center, Maywood CA in
support of Torito Promotions’ “Noche de Boxeo” fight
card. A boisterous crowd of 1,500 fight fans packed the
center to see Southern Ca favorite Roger “Speedy”
Gonzales take on Allan “Tiger” Visayas in an eight-round
super featherweight bout.
Roger
Gonzales, fighting out of Chino, CA entered the contest
with twenty wins, seventeen by way of knockout. As a
professional his only loss was at the hands of WBO
bantamweight champion Johnny Gonzalez. In fighting
Philippine fighter Allan Visayas, he faced a man with
twenty-one wins and only six losses. Neither fighter
was accustomed to losing. Rounds one and two were
tactical in nature, with a slight scoring edge to
Gonzales.
In round three Gonzales let his hands fly. A left hook
snapped the head of Visayas and sent him to the
canvass. Chanting “Mexico, Mexico”, the crowd spurred
Gonzales in the fourth. Mid way through the round a
body shot hurt Visayas, but it was another Gonzales left
hook that would end the fight. At 2:13 of the fourth
round, with Visayas on the carpet, referee Ray Corona
waived off the fight and declared Roger Gonzales the
winner by TKO.
In a
bout pitting two promising young super bantamweights,
Alejandro Perez (8-0-1, 4 KOs) proved too much for
Carson, Ca based Jesus Balderas (6-2-1, 6 KOs).
Balderas was game, but he was put in jeopardy in most
every round. Perez was impressive, working up and down
firing left hooks and a vicious right cross.
At
the end of the fifth round and again at the end of the
sixth the crowd rose to their feet in appreciation of
the action. The final scorecards favored Perez 58-56
and 60-54 twice.
In a rough
scrap wherein the fighters regularly clashed heads, Johnathan
Bobadilla (2-1) defeated Gerardo Robles (3-6) by scores of 40-36
and 39-37 twice. Bobadilla was the busier fighter in winning
the four-round super featherweight bout.
Oxnard based
lightweight Fernando Quintero (3-0) landed a beautiful uppercut
to floor Juan Hernandez (2-3) in the opening seconds of their
four-round lightweight fight. The fighters traded heavy blows
throughout the face paced bout but Quintero’s straight right was
the difference maker. Quintero won 40-35 on all three
scorecards.
A flurry of
punches by middleweight Armando Ramirez (3-0-1) forced Referee
Ray Corona to call a halt to the opening bout of the night at
1:18 of the first round. Ramirez remains undefeated as a
professional. With the loss Heriberto Cruz dropped to one
victory with three defeats.
