Hatton-Mayweather 850,000 PPV Buys
HBO Sports announced today that the Dec. 8 Floyd Mayweather-Ricky Hatton welterweight title bout generated 850,000 pay-per-view buys and $47 million in PPV revenue.

That total caps off the highest performing year in HBO Pay-Per-View history. In 2007, HBO PPV recorded 4.8 million buys and more than $255 million in revenue across eight boxing events. The previous high for HBO PPV in boxing was in 1999 with four million buys and $200 million in revenue. In 2006, HBO PPV registered 3.7 million buys and $177 million in revenue.

The banner year included the record-setting Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather May 5th mega-fight that produced the highest performing pay-per-view event in history with 2.4 million buys and $134 million in revenue.

Los Angeles – So all you Floyd Mayweather detractors can put the haterade down. The moment you pushed it far away from your place at the dinner table was about the same time that all the chanting stopped inside the MGM Grand (and various other parts of Las Vegas) from the throngs of Brits that followed Ricky Hatton to his ultimate destiny around 9:30 Saturday evening. The match followed the blueprint the Pretty Boy laid out; six rounds to measure, two rounds to soften him up and two more to put him away. Hatton, who admitted he underestimated (whoops) Mayweather speed and more interestingly, his size, wasn’t a complicated puzzle to figure out for the best pound for pound fighter in the business.

Tszyu: "Mayweather Is The Best, Pound4Pound"
Dear Tszyu Crew,

The Floyd Mayweather-Ricky Hatton fight in Las Vegas on the weekend was a very high quality match and I really enjoyed watching it. My congratulations to both men.

I think there is no doubt that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best boxer in the world pound-4-pound. He has backed up his words against the best and that is very important. Floyd Mayweather destroyed the hopes and dreams of 20,000 brits Saturday night as he put on a masterful performance to KO Ricky Hatton in the tenth round. Mayweather put to bed any doubts that he is the best pound for pound fighter of his generation, with a devastating finish to the fight.

I cannot begin to describe the effect that the defeat of Hatton has done to alter the mood of the fans here in Vegas. Mayweather didn’t just beat Hatton, he beat every single Brit in that arena. This bout was a big event long before they rang the first-round bell Saturday night. It was a match-up loaded with story lines, subplots, trash-talking and a remarkable contrast of personalities even wider than the ocean that separated the two.

But in the end, it would not be press conferences, pre-fight videos or expert analysis that revealed the truth. When the leather finally started flying and bodies collided in a dance of violent motion, history would record that on Dec. 8, 2007, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was still the greatest fighter on the planet.

Mayweather vs. Hatton Round By Round
By Robert Jones
After just a so-so three fight undercard, it's finally time for the main event. The Ricky Hatton fans found a way to entertain themselves throughout the undercard by singing and chanting. Whenever either of the two fighters were shown on the big screen inside the arena it quickly became apparent that nearly 100 percent of the fans are Hatton supporters. While that's somewhat impressive considering Las Vegas is Floyd Mayweather Jr. now calls home, he

Round 1: A clinch starts off the fight - hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. Mayweather lands a quick left hook about 45 seconds in. Hatton is pouring on the pressure. Mayweather wobbles backwards from a punch, barely staying on his feet from a quick inside punch. With every movement Hatton makes the crowd go crazy. Mayweather is warned for hitting behind the head. Mayweather lands back to back straight right hands with about 10 seconds to go in the round.

Terrible Scores In Mayweather vs. Hatton Fight
Plus Joe Cortez Took Way Too Much Control

The official judges scorecards read a ridiculous 89-81, 89-81, 88-82 at the time of the stoppage, giving Hatton only a single round on two cards and 2 rounds on one. You be the judge of that, let alone the fact Joe Cortez mentioned he wouldn't take too much charge of the fight and clearly mentioned he would "let the fight pan out", but ending up doing exactly what he said he wouldn't do, and even called time twice in the second round to let the two fighters know who exactly was in charge, and it certainly was not Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather Jr. Joe Cortez gave Mayweather a dozen warning about using his elbow which he used in every round, but never took a point, however when Mayweather turned his back and went through the ropes as Hatton threw a punch that hit the top rope, Cortez took an immediate and unnecessary point from Hatton. Turning your back on an opponent is more deserving of a point deduction in the rules of boxing. Cortez helped contribute in the knockout ending as Hatton was not allowed to fight his fight. Trainer Billy Graham warned Cortez about this before the fight in fact, to which Cortez replied he would let Hatton fight, but in the end, he didn't.

  "Undefeated" Live Undercard Coverage
Lacy Wins Decision Over Manfredo In Lackluster Fight
Jeff Lacy (now 23-1, 17 KO's) won a boring unanimous decision in a fight that could have gone either way over Peter Manfredo. It's clear the loss to Calzaghe has hurt Lacy mentally as he is just too gun-shy to let his hands go anymore. A knockdown from a right hook by Lacy sent Manfredo down in round 4, which was also the highlight of the fight. Final scores were 95-94, 96-93 and 97-92. Manfredo Falls to 28-5, 13 KO's.

DeLeon Less Than Thrilling In Unanimous Win
Daniel Ponce DeLeon (now 34-1, 30 KO's) retained the WBO title and won an awkward fought, boring 12 rounds with Eduardo Escobedo. The fight lacked any kind of action or excitement as Escobedo refused to exchange and often ducked into DeLeon causing several hits behind the head with warnings from the referee. DeLeon won on scores of 115-113, 117-111 and 118-110. Escobedo falls to 20-3 with 14 KO's.

Cherry Stops Ferguson With Picture Perfect Left Hook

Edner Cherry (23-5-2 11 KO's) stopped Wes Ferguson in a rematch that he also won, but this time in just 6 rounds. The fight started slow and looked to be on it's way to another unanimous 10 round decision like their first fight, but the action heated up when a left hook sent Ferguson down in the 6th for the first time in the fight. Ferguson held on and nearly made it out of the round, but another left hook right on the chin sent Ferguson down on his back and stumbling on the canvas for the count. Ferguson falls to 17-3-1 with 5 KO's.

Could pound4pound king Mayweather's
extreme confidence work against him?

Andy "TKO" Houghton looks at the big fight from the MGM Grand.

By Andy "TKO" Houghton
Mention the name Mayweather and the one word which comes to mind, rightly or wrongly, is confidence. Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer of "Pretty Boy Floyd" had it in droves - at least until he ran into Julio Cesar Chavez in his pomp. To listen to him and the rest of the clan speak, tonight's WBC welterweight title defense against junior welter top dog Ricky Hatton is a foregone conclusion.

Push Comes To Shove At Mayweather
vs. Hatton Final Press Conference

By Oliver Smith
WBC Welterweight Champ Floyd Mayweather has pushed challenger Ricky Hatton to his limit and in the Final Press Conference face-off for "Undefeated" Ricky finally had enough as he gave Floyd a bit of a shove as the two squared off for the media.

Hatton has kept his cool for the entire press tour but apparently he has had his fill of Mayweather's antics and it is obvious Ricky is ready to rumble.

Both men had plenty to say and here is sampling of some of the verbal barbs thrown out today.

Mayweather: "On Saturday night you will see Floyd Mayweather's versatility! You are going to see one hell of a fight."

Hatton: "I'm surprised about the odds being so close, I thought that he (Mayweather) would be clear favorite seeing as I'm a fat overweight fighter who has never fought anyone and who has been overprotected!"

Did You Know...

Yesterday Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton made his grand arrival at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, NV in preparation for his mega fight against "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather taking place this Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the MGM Grand and live on HBO Pay-Per-View.  Although this is Hatton's fourth fight in the United States, there are still things United States fight fans might like to know.

Did you know…Ricky Hatton is a Member of the British Empire.  This distinction was presented to Ricky in recognition of his achievements in and out of the ring. Prince Charles presented Ricky with the Member of the British Empire Medal on January 1, 2007.  Ricky is actively involved in local charities, "There is never a day goes by that I don't do something or sign something to help others less fortunate than myself" said Hatton. "PRETTY BOY" FLOYD MAYWEATHER: "This is another fight for me and I am totally prepared to do what I have to do Saturday night to beat Ricky Hatton.

"All my other opponents said they were going to beat me too and I'm still undefeated.

RICKY "THE HITMAN" HATTON: "A lot can be said before the fight and he has been saying all kinds of things, but all he's doing is lying to the papers.

"The reason I came to fight in the US in the first place was to get a fan base and here we are at the grand arrivals and I'm getting all of the cheers.  Not one person cheered for Floyd, they are all my fans.  We are here in his hometown, in Las Vegas, and not one fan in the crowd.  He seems like a confident man, but I think he's a bit insecure.  This is his hometown and if I got booed in my hometown of Manchester, I would hate that kind of reception. Very few people who aren't British think Ricky Hatton can beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. The great Kostya Tszyu felt that way when he fought Hatton, and like Floyd was the overwhelming favorite. Hatton knocked Tszyu out. Recently, Tszyu wrote on the internet: "I never felt that Ricky could beat me, but it happened. Everyone can be beaten. This is life." Can Ricky Hatton shock the world?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is universally recognized as the most gifted fighter on the planet. On rare occasion, he'll even tell you so. Ricky Hatton is far from the perfect fighter that Mayweather is, but he may just have the perfect style to defeat him. Let the Devil's Advocate tell you why.   Hatton Lands Verbal Body Blow On Mayweather
Today Ricky Hatton spoke to the media via teleconference about his battle with Floyd Mayweather that is set to take place in less than two weeks. When asked about Floyd’s trash talking Hatton landed the first significant blow when he said, “I think he (Floyd) is an insecure person and I think that’s why he surrounds himself with 5 or 6 bodyguards who all seem to be yes men. He always need people whispering in his ear, ‘you’re the man, you’re number one, you’re gonna do this and you’re gonna do that,’ it’s all a sign of insecurity! You don’t need anybody whispering in your ear to tell you that you’re the best. If you believe that you are the best then you don’t need anybody reminding you in your ear, that’s the way I feel. I think he is an insecure person and I think he does like to play mind games. I don’t think he does it to try and intimidate you because he needs to look in the mirror because he is not what you call intimidating looking with his nice suits on and his bling. It doesn’t exactly want to make me run straight away. I think what he tries to do is get under your skin and annoy you; it’s more to annoy you than to scare you. But he must surely know when he sees me and he looks at me that I am not scared of him. He knows I believe I can win and he knows I have no fear of him. I think during the promotional tour when he saw he got no reaction from me that it affected him more than it affected me. It’s like water off a ducks back to me, it doesn’t matter what he says or what insults he throws at me, I could not care less.”

Score that one for Ricky. Let’s see if Mayweather will have anything to say about those comments when it’s his turn with the media later this week.

Stay tuned for the entire audio of the Hatton conference call.

Lacy vs. Manfredo Jr. Headline Dec. 8 Undercard
It’s only fitting that the December 8 “UNDEFEATED” Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton featured undercard fights bring the same high caliber competition as the evening’s main event super bout. Former super middleweight world champion Jeff Lacy returns to the ring against former ‘Contender’ star Peter Manfredo Jr., WBO World Junior Featherweight Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon defends his crown against Eduardo Escobedo and rising star Wes Ferguson looks for payback in a rematch against Edner Cherry to put a perfect ending on the sweet science.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER:  Hey.  What's going on everybody?  First of all, I want to thank God.  I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions.  And I want to thank my up and coming company, Mayweather Promotions.  I mean, I think we're going to do a hell of a job, you know, with this fight.  And camp has went tremendous.  And I'm constantly trying to go outside the box.  When I say go outside the box, that means I'm trying to go – I'm not just trying to promote the fight.  With (INAUDIBLE) I'm, as well, pushing myself to the limit.  You know, we're trying to make the impossible, possible.  And I feel great, you know, just to work so hard to become an A-lister.  This truly is a blessing.  And I didn't do it by myself.  We had a good team.

  Ricky Hatton Teleconference Transcript
RICKY HATTON: I've already had two fights this year, obviously beating Juan Urango in January and recently Jose Luis Castillo, so yes, you prepare at that time really.  I mean I've come off one of the best performance against Castillo.  Floyd has come off one of the best wins of his career against, obviously, Oscar, and because I've kept busy, I've kept in great shape, you know, I've had the best performance, one of the best performances of my career.  And I think it was about that time to get this fight, and I just can't wait really.  I mean everything from the ticket sales have gone well, the coverage in the press in Great Britain is massive.  It's been labeled as one of the, you know, the best, biggest British fights to involve a British fighter.  And it's probably been said that  should I win, which I intend to do so, it'll be, it'll go down in history as Britain's greatest boxer to  win in a boxing match, which, so I don't think it needs me to underline how important this fight is for me.
