"Will To Win" Recap

Manny is Manny and until someone can prove to me otherwise I can't pick against him. In his 12 round unanimous decision over a retiring Marco Antonio Barrera, Pacquiao once again put all that distraction talk to rest and he still tops my list as best Pound4Pound fighter in the game. In his final stanza, Barrera made a good account of himself but once he realized Manny was not to be denied it appeared to me that Marco fought in a manner that assured he would remain on his feet, but in doing so it left little room for him to pull out an upset victory.

Steve Luevano appeared dead at the scales on Friday's weigh-in but the WBO Featherweight champ re hydrated and recuperated over the next 24 hours and in workman like fashion he took a clear cut unanimous decision over Antonio Davis. The fight was the prelim to the main event and even though Davis went down in round 11 the bout was mostly uneventful and for that matter, it really didn't draw much attention as the crowd was buzzing in anticipation for the highly waited for main event. It was a tough slot to fight in, but hey, someone had to be there and I am sure Bob Arum is pleased with this outcome.

Librado Andrade and Yusaf Mack put on the fight of the night as they went toe to toe for the vacant USBA Super Middle strap. Andrade hit the deck for the first time in his career in round one and things appeared rough for the game fighter. But Andrade weathered the storm and came back to turn this battle into a war for the next 6 rounds. Somewhere in round 7 Mack became discouraged by the tough chin and heavy hands of Andrade and Yusaf took a knee to think things through. Before he could figure out exactly what was going down Andrade seized the moment and it was a matter of seconds before Andrade put him down again, twice, and referee Jay Nady halted the bout at the 2:37 mark.

Panchito Bojado may regret coming in overweight for his bout with Steve Forbes and the split decision Forbes was given may haunt Bojado for quite sometime. Jr. Welter Forbes on the other hand was in shape, on weight, and ready to prove that his loss to Demetrius Hopkins was a fluke of bad judging. Forms pounded out a gritty performance and with the win he shoots himself right back into the 140 pound division.

Jr. Lightweight Vicente Escobedo has been touted as the next Golden Boy but his lack luster performance in his victory over Miguel Munguia did not raise the eyebrows of many. Yes, Vicente is a charming kid who speaks well and has that million dollar smile but his lack of spark in the ring may not be the things that Golden fighters are truly made of.
