Darchinyan Wipes Smirk
Off Mijares Face
By William Trillo Photos: Bret "The Threat" Newton I can't be real sure what WBA/WBC Flyweight champ Christian Mijares was thinking while he was smirking at IBF Champ Vic Darchinyan when the title unifying fight began but I do know before the first was over Darchinyan turned Mijares smile upside down. With one sweet left uppercut Mijares hit the deck hard and he was lucky to beat the count and stagger back to his corner.
Over the next eight rounds Vic
Darchinyan did what almost every boxing writer on the planet
said he couldn't do as he imposed his will and strength on
the hapless Mexican fighter Mijares who looked out of sorts
and uncomfortable from the opening bell.
In round nine Darchinyan put on a clinic for the first 2 minutes and 45 seconds and then he capped it off with a straight left hand that sent Mijares sprawling to the canvas for the final time, this fight was over and Darchinyan became the first to unify the belts at 115 pounds. The official time of the stoppage was 3:00 of round nine but the truth is Darchinyan had won this battle before the opening bell rang.
Dirrell Grabs
NABO Super Middle Strap
Super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell had the pedal to the metal early and ran out of gas for a bit before he scored a sixth round TKO over the never say die Victor Oganov (28-2, 28 KOs). Starting with a huge barrage, Dirrell let it all hang out in round one but Oganov somehow survived. Dirrell admitted he almost punched himself early but he stayed focused and put a good beating on Oganov. The beat down lasted up until the 28 second mark of round six before referee Ray Corona has seen enough and brought a halt to the battle for the NABO Super Middle belt.
