Abner Mares Is Ready For A Title Shot
Abner Mares who lives with his family in Hawaiian Gardens, California represented Mexico in 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He lost a controversial decision to a Hungarian boxer, Bedak. Oscar De La Hoya consoled disappointed Abner by saying that he thought that Mares won the fight, then after the Olympics signed him to a promotional contract in November of 2004.
Abner Mares had a break out performance last November in Atlantic City, New Jersey against a rugged Argentine, David Marchiano. Abner dominated the contest but was taken into very deep waters by an opponent who would not go away. His last fight against Pilipino, Diasdado Gabi was two round blow-out. The twenty two year old Mares (16-0,10KO) is scheduled to take on former world champion Kermin Guardia (37-8,21KO’s) from Turbo, Colombia. “I really don’t look at his record,” said Abner of his opponent:” I look that he had over thirty fights, he has a lot of experience and we are ready for him. We were in camp for two and a half month, we had a fight canceled on May31st and we just kept training.”
Last year Abner procured services of a famous Mexican trainer Ignacio Beristain and you could already notice classic boxing style, Nacho’s signature, appear in Mares’s moves.
“It’s great, he taught me so much,” said Abner about his trainer:” He taught me what the pros are all about. I think I have learned a lot, I learned how to deal with experienced fighters; I learned how to deal with better fighters.”
Mares seemed to be in terrific shape as he was shadow boxing in the ring. He is hoping to get a title shot this year. “We can’t be too confident with this fight, we are trying to make a statement,” said Abner of his upcoming bout:” and deserve a number one ranking by WBO and deserve to fight Gerry Penalosa for a title. All I have to do is to prove to people and to prove to myself that I am ready.”
Abner Mares at just twenty two years old seems destined to become a future champion Please join me at Morongo Casino on June 27th to watch Mares and a few other prospects that Golden Boy is banking its future on. Doors open at 4:00 pm. |
