Rubio Did What?
By William Trillo It was a big news day in boxing today so I was doing some website surfing when I came across this intro sentence to the Friday night Telefutura results;
WBC #3 middleweight Marco Antonio
Rubio (42-4-1, 37 KOs) brutalized Freddie Cuevas (26-10-1,
17 KOs) for five rounds and the one-sided bout was halted
after the fifth.
I was a bit upset at first because I got
those results before the west coast feed telecast. (That's
an entirely different issue that I will discuss on a later
date). But, because Rubio is apparently next in line for
Kelly Pavlik's title, I figured I would check out this
"brutal" beat down.
Having seen Rubio on numerous occasions
it is my opinion that he is not all that great, but hey,
maybe tonight would prove me wrong............ummm no.
Rubio sucks and so does anyone who
claims he brutalized Cuevas.
The 27 year old Rubio was facing a 38
year old Freddie Cuevas who has lost 6 of his last 11
fights. Seemingly not a very tough task for "El Veneno", yet
from the opening bell the aged Cuevas busted Rubio in the
mouth and caught him with counter left hooks that landed
flush on Rubio's chin.
Although I will admit Rubio probably won
every round before it was stopped, the fact is he was eating
leather repeatedly and if he lets Pavlik land these kind of
blows...well you saw what Kofi Jantuah did to Rubio, expect
the same if he fights Pavlik maybe worse, and he only lasted
33 seconds with Jantuah.
Rubio's best shots Friday night were all
low blows, so if that can be called brutal, then so be it.
Cuevas was never down and his corner
threw in the towel for no reason I could see after round 5.
