Lions & Pit Bulls &
Pugs...Oh My!
Report & Photos By William Trillo
Like a journey to The Land of Oz, ESPN's Friday night
show was filled with an assortment of wild beasts, both
4 legged and two legged. It was a near carnival
atmosphere but the crowd at Buffalo Bill's in Nevada did
not complain, in fact they enjoyed all the festivities,
and rightly so, the night was full of thrills and spills
thanks to the Main Events that featured a couple of Gary
Shaw promoted stars.
The main event saw Jr. Middleweight
Alfredo "Perro" Angulo (16-1,13 KO's), in his first
fight since his first pro loss.
Angulo wasted no time jumping on
his foe Gabriel Rosado (12-4 7 KO's), as he dumped him
on the seat of his pants with a nice right hand early.
It was all Angulo from that point on
as the tough Mexican pressed hard and did not let up
until the referee waved it off quickly in the second
round at the 2:13 mark.
In the Semi-Main Super Middle
Anthony Dirrell (18-0, 15 KO's) took on a very tough
Alfredo Contreras (10-6-1, 4 KO's) who was a game
challenge but did not have the firepower to deal with
Dirrel.
From the opening bell the fighters
were jawing and smiling at each other but it was Dirrel
who was inflicting all the damage. Try as he might,
Contreras did not have an answer for Dirrel's onslaught
and it was clear this fight would not see the final
bell.
It was in the seventh round that
Dirrell began teeing off time and time again and it
wasn't long before his corner men hopped onto the ring
apron and threw in the towel forcing the ref to stop
it at the 2:32 mark.
Also featured on the card was the
bright Heavyweight prospect Travis Kauffman (18-0, 15
KO's), who didn't need long to dispose of William
Shanahan (7-2, 6 KO's). After going down right away in
round one Shanahan was sent reeling and the ref stopped
the battle. This one came to a halt quickly in round 1.
