Juan Manuel Lopez (now 29-0, 26 KO's) stopped Bernabe
Concepcion in just two rounds with blistering speed and
tremendous power. Though the fight started quick and ended
just as fast, both fights were dropped in the opening round,
including two more knockdowns in the 2nd.
In round 1, both fights went right at each other. They
traded left hooks and it was Concepcion staggering from the
center of the ring all the way to the ropes. Lopez unleashed
a fury of punches and landed a left hook that dropped
Concepcion for the first time in the fight. Concepcion rose
on uneasy legs and began to get hammered against the ropes
by a Lopez assault. Concepcion was doing the right thing in
mixing in counters, and it paid off when a left hook of his
own sent Lopez down at the end of the round.
In round 2, the two again met in the center of the right. A
straight left sent Concepcion straight back to the canvas
moments into the round. Concepcion was game and got right
back in, but Lopez was just too much, landing another
combination ended with a left right through the guard that
sent Concepcion down a second time in the round. Concepcion
was dazed and staggered to his feet. The referee decided he
had seen enough and waived it off at 2:37.
Concepcion falls to 30-3-1 with 17 KO's.
Pound4Pound spoke with Gary Shaw seconds after the fight was
over and in regard to Showtime's comments about Juanma being
vulnerable and having a chink in his armor Shaw agreed
saying, "For sure, and we will KO him", referring to the
September 18th Las Vegas showdown with his fighter Rafael
Marquez.
