Lopez Better Than The Beast

What started slowly ended with a bang as Patrick Lopez chased John “Eastern Beast” Brown around the ring in search of a knock out in the eighth and final round of their junior welterweight contest. Lopez had to settle for a dominant performance against the former title contender turned gate-keeper from Atlantic City, New Jersey. Presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions, Lopez v. Brown headlined a furious night of boxing at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA.

Rounds one and two were overly tactical as the 5’4” Brown cautiously approached the 5’8” Lopez. Brown (24-17-2) flicked a harmless jab toward Lopez who countered with looping hooks thrown one punch at a time. In the third Lopez (18-2) increased his work rate and began putting his punches together.

Brown resorted to rough-housing in the fourth, apparently frustrated by his inability to generate any offense. Lopez sustained a cut in the round from an accidental head butt. The fifth was plagued by long periods of inactivity though Lopez clearly was in command. Lopez pressed Brown in the sixth though he reverted to throwing one punch at a time.

Lopez focused on the body in the seventh forcing Brown to grab and hold. Inspired by the body work he initiated in the seventh, Lopez returned to Brown’s body in the eighth. A hard left to the liver dropped Brown who struggled to get back onto his feet. Once he did Lopez battered Brown to the bell. The judges awarded Lopez a unanimous decision by scores of 79-72 and 80-71 twice.

Daniel Hernandez unleashed a hook to the body that dropped Baudel Cardenas for the count to win their lightweight contest at :31 seconds of the fifth. Hernandez’ superior hand speed carried the early rounds but it was his hooks to the body that proved the difference in the fight. Cardenas (18-20-2) fell in the fourth from a left to the body. He survived the round but got caught with a right early in the fifth. Referee David Denkin waived off the bout when Cardenas failed to rise by the count of ten. Hernandez improved to nine wins without a loss with the stoppage of Cardenas.

Junior welterweights Hector Serrano and Cristian Favela waged a spirited six round contest won by Serrano by unanimous decision. Favela (17-24-6) forged forward throughout the fight, leading and landing with his head. Serrano (11-0) countered with uppercuts in combination with a hook or straight right hand. Serrano boxed smartly behind a scoring jab and piled up points to earn the nod. Final scores tallied 59-55 and 60-54 twice for the undefeated Serrano.

Efrain Esquivias Jr. overwhelmed a game but overmatched Randy Arrellin (2-2) to win their featherweight contest by TKO in the sixth. Arrellin started the scoring with lead right hands in the first. He secured round two by buzzing Esquivias (7-0) with a sneaky right mid way through the round. Esquivias responded by applying pressure in the third behind a focused body attack. Esquivias’ continuous body assault forced Arrellin to take a knee in the fourth and again in the fifth. With the fight taken out of Arrellin, Esquivias zeroed in for the kill. A series of unanswered blows by Esquivias forced referee David Denkin to halt the bout at 2:40 of the sixth. Esquivias overcame a first round cut caused by an accidental head butt.

Alberto Herrera (7-0) pitched a shutout against durable veteran Hilario Lopez (11-9) over six junior middleweight rounds. Herrera dominated the action with hard hooks to the body and head. The aggressor throughout the fight, Herrera did his best work when he backed Lopez to the ropes. Lopez looked to counter but rarely timed Herrera’s charge. Final scores favored Herrera 60-54 on all three cards.

The superior boxing skills of Jonathan Garcia overcame the sheer aggression of Anthony Reyes in a bout of young pugilists making their professional debuts. Garcia’s advantages in length and reach were negated by the aggression and punching power of Reyes (0-1). The difference in the bout was a first round knockdown Reyes suffered when the fighters’ feet tangled. Garcia (1-0) won by split decision on scores of 39-36, 38-37 & 37-38.
