Rios Wins; Orozco Ready For
Next Step
Report & Photos By Roy & Marlene Marquez
Ronny Rios rolled to his
12th straight victory when Leivi Brea folded like a lawn
chair and was counted out by referee Jose Cobian at 2:59
of the fourth round. Rios v. Brea headlined Golden Boy’s
Fight Night Club at Club Nokia-LA Live fight series.
Neither Rios nor Brea
(17-9-3) did much in a slow first round. After losing a
point in the second for a low blow, Rios finally awoke
in the third. Rios let his hands go and landed several
left hooks to the body.
Rios (12-0) opened the
fourth as he closed the third and dropped Brea with a
well placed left hook. After rising, Brea backed to the
opposite corner where Rios pursued with bad intentions.
Rios landed another hook
and Brea dropped to his knees. When referee Jose Cobian
picked up the count Brea contested the call and quit on
his knees.
In the co-main event of
the evening, promising welterweight Antonio Orozco waxed
journeyman Humberto Tapia over six attention grabbing
rounds. With good hand speed and continuous movement
Orozco dictated the action.
With sharp combinations
and an accurate right hand Orozco dominated the fight.
Orozco (8-0) worked the jab in the opener to control the
early action. In the second he hooked to the head off a
hook to the body a la Mike Tyson. A stiff right early in
the third staggered Tapia and served as a wakeup call.
Tapia (15-15-1) pressed
Orozco the balance of the round but ate two punches to
land one. Tapia couldn’t or wouldn’t keep the pace and
became target practice over the next two rounds. Orozco
doubled the jab in the sixth to cruise to victory.
Orozco won the fight by unanimous scores of 60-54.
Like a patient offense
in football, Salvador Rios took what the defense gave
him and focused his fire power on Stephen Rubalcava’s
exposed mid section.
When Rubalcava (0-2)
finally lowered his hands Rios stung him with a stiff
right that prompted referee Jose Cobian to call of the
fight at 1:35 of the second round.
Rios (1-0) looked poised
beyond his years in making his professional debut.
With his back against
the ropes Jacob Alvarez wilted under the heavy hands of
Bastie Samir just 2 minutes, 37 seconds into the opening
round of their super middleweight bout.
Samir (4-0) pounded
Alvarez relentlessly until referee Raul Caiz waived off
the contest. Alvarez (0-2) faltered by lingering in the
corners despite frantic pleas from his corner to stay
off the ropes.
In an ugly swing bout,
Jonathan Bobadilla outworked Juan Figueroa to capture
the victory in their four round junior welterweight
fight.
Bobadilla (5-3) lost a
point for a head butt that disfigured Figueroa (6-8-1)
but didn’t cost him the fight. Final scores were 39-36,
39-36 & 38-37 for Bobadilla.
Armando Dorantes (8-2)
exploded on Sergio De La Torres, dropping him twice in
the first 1:06 of their welterweight contest to win by
knockout.
De La Torres (11-15-3)
was game but couldn’t stand up to Dorantes’ left hand
power.
