Different
Options On The Table For Adonis Stevenson
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, is
working very hard to make the Adonis Stevenson’ file
progress. Stevenson (18-1-0), who is ranked second contender
of two majors super middleweight world titles, the WBC and
the IBF, is impatient to participate in a world
championship.
"Tuesday, I had a good discussion with members of the WBC
championship committee, about the possibility of Adonis
being involved soon in a super middleweight world bout,"
said Yvon Michel Wednesday morning. "According the WBC,
Andre Ward (25-0-0) cannot fight his mandatory challenger in
a short term, for a medical reason (he got a broken right
hand when he won the "Super Six" tournament against Carl
Froch (28-2-0) December 17th in Atlantic City). Then, the
WBC mentioned that a world championship fight will be
organized soon between Anthony Dirrell (24-0-0) and Nikola
Sjekloca, from Montenegro. The winner of this world title
would face my fighter Adonis Stevenson. And a winner of a
fight Stevenson-Dirrell or Stevenson-Sjekloca would have to
face Ward, if Andre does not move in the light heavyweight
division."
Ward, however, is supposed to attend to the WBC light
heavyweight championship of the world between Chad Dawson
and Bernard Hopkins next Saturday in Atlantic City. If
Dawson wins, Ward, apparently, will challenge Dawson. If
Ward gets a positive answer from Dawson, he will move
officially in the light heavyweight division.
In winning the Showtime "Super Six" tournament, Ward became
WBC and WBA champion of the world.
What will be first direction for Stevenson? The WBC title or
the IBF title?
"All the options are on the table for Adonis," said Yvon
Michel. "We will contact the IBF soon, to see the
possibility to organize a decisive elimination bout for the
position number one. If we get the OK, the winner of an
eventual fight between Adonis and the South African Thomas
Oostuizen (18-0-1) would be considered as the mandatary
challenger for the champion, Lucian Bute. I know that Adonis
is dreaming to fight Bute, then, we will see what will
happens."
If Stevenson becomes WBC champion of the world in 2013, he
could challenge Bute for a IBF-WBC unification bout.
