Donaire Once
Again Struggles To Capture The Audience With Split Decision
Win Over Vazquez Jr.

Nonito Donaire (now
28-1, 18 KO's) moved up to Super Bantamweight and won
the vacant WBO title with another less than thrilling
split decision victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. While
Donaire appeared to have the edge through the majority
of the fight, Donaire still had a hard time figuring out
Vazquez in the mid rounds, and could not finish him
after stunning him once and dropping him in the 9th.
Vazquez's game plan looked to turn things up in the mid
to late rounds as he was hesitant to get right to work
as Donaire did, who swept the first 4 rounds. In rounds
5 through 7, Vazquez began to land straight right hands
as Donaire began to tire.
Donaire regained control through the remainder of the
fight, but there was very little "flash" to his style,
but more "one-and-done", power punches that Vazquez was
mostly blocking with his guard.
In round 9, a left uppercut followed by a grazing left
hook sent Vazquez down for the first time in the fight.
Donaire could not finish the fight with a knockout, thus
going the full 12. Final scores were 115-112 for
Vazquez, and two 117-1110 scores for Donaire. Vazquez
falls to 21-2-1 with 18 KO's.
After the fight, Donaire blamed a compound fracture in
his right hand for his lackluster performance.
