  Reynoso Ready For Provodnikov

By Barbara Pinnella

Jose Reynoso, (16-3-1, 3 KOs) has a big opportunity coming up this Friday night in Corona, CA. when he will face off against Russian born Ruslan Provodnikov (21-1, 14 KOs). Reynoso knows this is an important fight for him. Provodnikov’s one loss came when he faced off against fellow Thompson Boxing Promotions fighter Mauricio Herrera the beginning of last year.

“I was really excited when they said I got to fight Ruslan,” he told me recently when I saw him at Capital Punishment gym in Riverside. “I’ve seen him fight, and Mauricio and I have similar styles of fighting. I know I can beat him.”

Reynoso was supposed to fight last Friday night at Doubletree, but as so often happens in this business plans had to be scrapped. As for Ruslan’s opponent Nick Casal, he had been attacked a few weeks back and it was immediately known that that fight could not continue. Casal should recover completely, but suffered cuts that required more than 200 stitches.

“After that happened, Ruslan had no other opponent yet and they asked if I wanted to fight him, and I said yes. As far as styles go, he likes to get in there and try to out-muscle everybody. I’m more of a boxer kind of puncher, but if I have to slug it, I’ve got power, so I’m not worried about it.”

Reynoso has been sparring with Josesito Lopez who, everyone knows by now, just defeated Victor Ortiz in what most probably will be the upset of the year. That hard work certainly can’t have hurt Reynoso.

“We’ve been out there helping each other out for our upcoming fights, so we’ve got great sparring. Jose’s stepped up his training a lot, so I’m not worried about the training. When we get to the fight we’re going to be 100% ready.”

And he will need to be. While Reynoso is known for his stamina, Ruslan is no slouch in that department either. Both men are more than capable of taking the fight the distance. One thing that Jose does have going for him is his southpaw style. He is a difficult opponent for most fighters, often considered awkward and hard to hit.

“I just want to let everybody know that they’re gonna get a great fight from me. I’m gonna beat this guy and surprise everyone who’s doubting me.”

This fight will be shown on ESPN2 at 9:30pm ET, 6:30pm PT.

Be safe and God Bless,
Viva La Raza,
Barb.
