No…“Junebug” Forced To Retool On The Fly is not the name of the newest Science Fiction thriller, but for David “Junebug” Mijares (4-0, 3 KO’s) engaging in the Sweet Science will be a thriller tonight as the change in opponent, now Evincii Dixon (7-15-2, 2 KO‘s), has him looking up, both figuratively and literally. The late change has Mijares facing a fighter nearly 6 inches taller than the one he was making ready for originally.

On the change in foes Mijares has a very positive outlook saying, “There was an opponent change and now I am fighting Dixon. Like the opponent who fell out he is experienced with 6 round fights and has fought them his whole career. The big difference is this guy has a height advantage over me; he is close to 6 feet tall. But this is fine, we want to keep taking forward steps toward the top, we don’t want to go backwards. People will look down upon you for fighting lesser opponents so we want to make sure our competition gets tougher with each and every outing. So when people come out to see me they are going to get a real fight every time.”

Mijares knows that being on this card that opens the year for Golden Boy at The Belasco Theatre alongside some of other top prospects like Joshua Franco, Jonathon Navarro and Ryan Davis is nothing to take lightly. About the card chock full of young talent “Junebug” stated, “Being on the card with three other big up and comers like this is great. We are all the type of guys everyone is looking at because we are action fighters and I am glad to be part of this group on this card.”

Of course most fighters don’t like to look past the task at hand, but with his promoter Golden Boy just sealing a pretty sweet deal with ESPN it’s clear with some impressive performances Mijares could find himself getting some good TV exposure this coming year. Speaking about the coming year Mijares told Pound4Pound, “Over the course of the year we are hoping to get in five good fights and hope they will all be entertaining for all my fans. I am climbing that ladder and looking to get that respect. We’ll have to see how things go. I realize that right now I am at the bottom of The Golden Boy food chain so I am looking forward to making the most out of the time they give me in the ring. My inspiration is Marvin Hagler, a guy who started from the bottom. That’s who I am looking to emulate both personality wise and workmanship wise. I want to be seen as a regular guy who worked his way up with no gimmicks and no arrogance…nothing like that for me. I come from working class people. That’s how I was raised and that’s how we want to make our mark.”

Mijares will look to take his next step tonight and make his mark with a victory over the seasoned Evincii Dixon. With a victory "Junebug" will be on his way to making his mark in 2017.

Mijares vs. Dixon is an six-round super lightweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Tecate Cerveza BORN BOLD and Casa Mexico Tequila.
