David Lemieux: "I Will Take Care Of Stevens,
& Challenge The Biggest Names Of My Division"

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The Montrealer middleweight David Lemieux has huge ambitions for the months to come. He wants absolutely to challenge the biggest names of the 160 pounds division. However, actually, he has one name in mind: Curtis Stevens.

Lemieux (36-3-0) and Stevens (29-5-0), a New Yorker, will be nose to nose in the ring of the Turning Stone Casino March 11th. They will fight for the WBO Intercontinental title and the WBC Americas Continental title. The bout will be televised by HBO.

“It’s true, actually, I am totally concentrated on Curtis Stevens,” said Lemieux in French in a conference call organizes by the Golden Boy Promotions Group in Los Angeles and The Eye Of The Tiger Management Group in Montréal. “But I am not afraid to tell you that I will take care of Stevens March 11th, and after, I want to challenge the biggest names of the middleweight division. I will be ready to face all the super stars of the division. Stevens? He is a big mouth who has no respect for me, and I am determinate to destroy him.”

Stevens (29-5-0) does not seem intimidated at all by the Lemieux’s comments. “Lemieux will destroy me? I am impatient to see how this playboy will react when I will attack him. Lemieux can say what he wants, March 11th, my fists will talk! And talk loud! Lemieux tries to intimidate me, but he is losing this time. He will see what I can achieve in the ring in few days…”

Marc Ramsay, the Lemieux’s trainer, has the conviction that his fighter is too strong physically for Stevens. “Stevens is an intense fighter, he loves to charge the opponent, but I cannot see how he will be able to stay on his feet if he tries to exchange punch for punch with my fighter,” said the Montrealer trainer. “ David is so strong physically, stronger than Stevens. Both are good technically, both loves to attack in the ring, and this situation is clearly favorable for Lemieux. I said it several times, David never stopped to progress technically during the last year, then, he will certainly impress you March 11th.”

The Stevens trainer, John David Jackson, said his fighter could not be better prepared for this challenge. “Curtis worked extremely hard in the gym to be perfectly prepared for this challenge,” said Jackson. He has the talent, the determination and the experience to dominate this bout. Curtis proved in the past he is able to perform at the top when a fight is significant, and this one is for sure.”

The promoter of The Eye Of The Tiger Management Group in Montréal, Camille Estephan, is the Lemieux’s manager. “This fight Lemieux-Stevens could become the fight of the year on the international scene, and David should scored the KO of the year,” said Estephan. “ David is on fire now. He is so determinate to become back world champion, and trust me, he will do everything possible to stay undefeated in his next fights. I would be not surprised if the Golden Boy Promotions Group would organize a fight with Lemieux and Saul Canelo Alvarez during the next year. It could be a hell of event in sports.”
