Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Kovalev vs. Alvarez Is On
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The promoters Kathy Duva, from New York, and Yvon
Michel, from Montréal, finalized an agreement few hours ago
for a world championship bout between the Montrealer
Colombian Eleider Alvarez and the Russian Sergey Kovalev, a
12 rounds bout who could be presented in July at Madison
Square Garden in New York.
Alvarez (23-0-0), who is the mandatory challenger for the
WBC light heavyweight championship of the world since 2015,
was hoping since more than two years to face the WBC 175
pounds champion of the world, Adonis Stevenson (29-1-0), but his
dream never became reality. Stevenson (29-1-0) will defend
his title against the Swedish African Badou Jack (22-1-2)
March 19th at Bell Centre in Montréal.
When Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, told him
that Kathy Duva was very interested to oppose him to Kovalev
(32-2-1), Alvarez said yes with no hesitation.
“Kovalev is the actual WBO champion of the world, and he is
ready to face me,” said Alvarez to a radio commentator in
Montréal. “I mentioned to Yvon Michel: Please, finalize a
deal with Kathy Duva, because I am so tired to wait my
chance to fight for a world title. I am waiting this
opportunity since more than two years.”
We can expect that the winner of the bout Kovalev-Alvarez
would fight after the winner of the fight Stevenson-Jack,
for the unification of the WBC and WBO light heavyweight
world titles.
Apparently, it’s the Showtime intention to realize an
unification titles match between the winners of these two
world championship bouts challenge the Mexican Jesus Beltran
(1-1-0), and Osias will meet the Mexican Josele Napoles
(6-7-0).
