Lafrenière Will Defend His NABO Title
Against Albert Onolunose March 15

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL — The promoter of the GYM Group in Montréal, Yvon Michel, confirmed that the Montrealer Francis Lafrenière will defend his NABO North American middleweight championship March 15th at the Montréal Casino.

In the main event of this boxing show, Lafrenière (16-5-2), who has the brothers Otis and Howard Grant as trainers at the Monster Gym in Dorval, will face Albert Onolunose (22-1-1), a fighter from Nigeria living now in Calgary, Alberta.

Lafrenière, a fighter from Côteau-du Lac (western Montréal suburb), is actually ranked nine contender by the WBO in the 160 pounds division, and 15th by the IBF.

“I want absolutely to improve my situation in the international ratings, than, I cannot afford a lost March 15th,” said Lafrenière Tuesday afternoon at the Montréal Casino. “It will be a tough fight, but I am ready for this challenge. Onolunose was ranked in the Top 10 in the world in 2014. He is a former Nigerian champion. I know he is a good fighter, but I know what I got to achieve to win the bout, and I will do it. I am so determinate to prove I have my place among the best middleweights in the world.”

Bernard Barré, the scout of the GYM Group, believes that Lafrenière will maintain his progression on the international boxing scene. “Francis is extremely determined, we saw it at his last bouts, and he showed a great progression last year and this year,” said Barré. “I really believe he will maintain his progression and he will dispute more and more significant bouts with our organization.”

Just before the fight Lafrenière-Onolunose, the French African middleweight Christian MBilli (7-0-0) will fight Pavel Semjonov (22-8-2), from Estonia, and the Montrealer light heavyweight Shakeel Phinn (16-2-0) will know soon the identity of his next opponent.

“I am positive that the fight Lafrenière-Onolunose will generate great action,” said Yvon Michel. “It’s a crucial bout for both fighters, who want both to improve their situation in the international ratings. We will certainly have a spectacular main event March 15th.”
