William Silva: "Teofimo Lopez
Believes His Own Hype"
By Damon “Latinbox” Gonzalez
William Silva (25-1, 14 KO’s) will be challenging Teofimo
Lopez (9-0, 7 KO’s) for World Boxing Council (WBC)
Continental Americas Title on Saturday, July 14th, at
Lakefront Arena on the campus of the University of New
Orleans (UNO), in the co-Main event of Regis “Rougarou”
Prograis vs. Juan Jose Velasco will be televised live on
ESPN and ESPN.
Silva hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil fights out of Plant City,
Florida and has the biggest fight of his career on the
horizon as he will be facing the blue-chipper Teofimo Lopez,
whom his well known trainer and father Junior Lopez calls
the most talent fighter he has ever worked with his son. Add
in promotional giant Bob Arum with Top Rank, Inc. and it
would seem that the general feeling is that Silva is just
supposed to be another victim.
Silva, of course, has other plans “Lopez has fought mostly
guys expecting to lose. That is not my mentality, I have
been here before, I have been the heavy underdog many times
and fought guys that 100% thought they were going to win
like López does.”
Silva has indeed been in this scenario before “My first loss
against Felix Verdejo tells the story of why I will beat
Silva coming off my big victory over Rogelio Casarez went
the full twelve round distance in a unanimous decision
winning the IBO Continental Lightweight Title and the NBA
World Lightweight Title back in March 2018 put him in a
position to get this opportunity from his Promoter Jody
Caliguire from Fire Fist Boxing Promotions.
Silva pulls no punches in saying that he will be victorious
over the highly touted Lopez saying “I expect Lopez to be
“I’m not one of the golden boys in front of the big lights
but that is my drive because I want to show people that
anyone can become champion and anyone can overcome the odds.
“Teofimo Lopez thinks he has already won, he believes his
own hype and thinks he is untouchable but I know otherwise.”
The trash talking is not my thing, I focus on when the bell
rings fight night and going my job”
