  Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Canelo & Kovalev Are Sure
They Will Be In The Winners Circle

By Daniel Cloutier

LAS VEGAS -The Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez and the Russian Sergey Kovalev are clearly ready for a war…. a war in the the ring. Alvarez (51-1-2), the middleweight (160 pounds) WBA and WBC champion of the world, will face Kovalev (34-3-1), the WBO light heavyweight (175 pounds) champion of the world, November 2nd at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

It this bout, it’s Kovalev who will defend his title. Alvarez will fight in the light heavyweight division for the first time. “Alvarez challenged me, it’s because he knows I am the best light heavyweight on the planet,” said Kovalev. “He is persuaded that this fight will make him more popular than ever. But I am thinking exactly like him. I am positive that the result of this fight will make me more popular than ever. Yes, I really believe I am gonna win this bout, but I have a great respect for Alvarez. I know I needed a great preparation for this challenge, and I got a perfect training camp. Alvarez is a good fighter, he has a solid chin, he is agressive, he has a good stamina, then, the boxing fans will certainly adore our bout. It will be intense from the beginning to the end. It will be a war in the ring. Alvarez got to move up in the light heavyweight division to face me, then, I am sure he will hit with more power than in the past. The people around Alvarez believe I will get a lack of energies Saturday night by the fact I fought recently (August 24th, I beat the British Anthony Yarde by TKO), but it’s absolutely false. More I am active, more I am performing in the ring.”

Alvarez also is extremely confident to be in the winning circle. “It’s a huge challenge for me, but I am very enthusiastic to live this experience,” said Alvarez. “I really think that my determination, my power, my intensity and with a good strategy, I have the weapons to win this bout. I believe it will the most difficult bout of my pro boxing career, but my fans will be very proud of me when I will get out of the ring.”

Alvarez lost only one fight in pro boxing. It was in 2013 in Las Vegas, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0-0) beat him by majority decision of the judges. And Canelo knows that the Montrealer Colombian Eleider Alvarez beat Kovalev by KO in the fifth round in 2018 in Atlantic City (but Kovalev won the rematch by unanimous decision in Texas in 2019). “As you know, I have a solid chin, I never lost a fight by KO, then, I will certainly test the Kovalev’s chin, I know that he lost by KO against Eleider Alvarez in 2018. Some boxing fans who think that it will be a difficult mission for me to fight in the light heavyweight division, but I am positive I will be comfortable in the ring next Saturday».

Egis Klimas, the Kovalev’s manager, said: “It will a magic moment for the international boxing scene. This bout is promising great action. My fighter took this fight very seriously, he trained with concentration and intensity, and I am positive he will deliver a great performance. He is definitively the greatest light heavyweight in the world.”

The promoter the fight, the former world champion Oscar De La Hoya, is impatient to see this fight become reality. “Canelo is determinate to become the fourth Mexican fighter to win a world title in a fourth weight’s division, I am positive he will offer us a splendid performance. He has the chin, the power, the stamina and the talent to win this big challenge. I really believe in his natural potential.”
De La Hoya is the big boss of the Golden Boy Promotions organization.

Alvarez became worlds champion in the super welterweight division (154 pounds), in the middleweight division and in the super middleweight division (168 pounds).

Alvarez won 35 pro bouts by KO or TKO, Kovalev 29.

Alvarez is 29 years old, Kovalev 36.
