Lewis Always In Tszyu' Corner


Australia’s most celebrated boxer, Kostya Tszyu, has not fired long-time trainer and mentor, Johnny Lewis, contrary to reports coming out of Russia today.

Team Tszyu were made aware of the unfounded accusation this evening during transit at Bangkok en route to Sydney.

The press release falsely implied Tszyu’s manager, Matt Watt, had issued a statement confirming Tszyu had sacked Lewis, though there were no direct quotes from Watt to accompany this report.

“There is absolutely no truth in this statement and it is disappointing that someone has released false information that is potentially damaging to both Kostya and Johnny,” said Matt Watt from Changi Airport.

“Johnny Lewis made the decision to stop the contest after the 11th round in the best interests of his fighter, and Kostya accepts this decision,” finished Watt.

Hatton fought a tactical fight, nullifying Tszyu’s trademark power punches with his constant pressure and suffocating style. The 26-year old rose to the occasion and put in the most complete performance of his career, but the blatant low blow that brought Tszyu to his knees late in the contest, really took a heavy toll on the defending champion.

“It was a war of attrition right from the opening bell and Kostya showed tremendous courage to perform as he did,” said Watt. “Hatton was a clear and deserving winner and no one from Team Tszyu refutes that. But the blatant illegal strike to the groin was a telling factor in Kostya’s condition late in the fight, though surprisingly came without penalty from the referee.”

Tszyu and Lewis have a long-standing relationship that stems back to 1991 when Australia’s pre-eminent boxing trainer convinced Tszyu to relocate to Australia and launch his professional career. The pair has formed one of the most successful bonds in Australia’s sporting history – a relationship that is formed on trust and one that has elevated both Lewis and Tszyu to legendary status in sporting circles.

Johnny Lewis is recognised around the world not only for his expertise as a boxing trainer, but his unquestionable commitment to protecting the health and well-being of his fighters. Kostya Tszyu is no exception.

Tszyu’s post-fight tribute to Hatton and graceful acceptance of defeat has been applauded all over the world. He was given a standing ovation by the 22,000-strong Mancunian crowd. It is a strong reflection of Tszyu’s tremendous character and honourable qualities.

Possibly the best illustration of the bond shared between Lewis and Tszyu was displayed on Sunday morning after the fight. Tszyu’s face was a colourful reminder of the brutal war he had fought with Hatton in the ring several hours earlier. But it was Tszyu who first asked Lewis, ‘How are you feeling mate?’ Lewis responded, ‘Mate, I’m proud. I’ve been proud of you in victory so many times and equally proud of you in defeat today.”

At 35, Tszyu will now be forced to consider his future. A decision will not be made until Tszyu has discussed plans with his family and management team.
