Wegner, Abraham honored - again
Ulli Wegner and IBF middleweight champion King Arthur Abraham
received an early Christmas gift this week. They both defended
their titles as German coach and fighter of the year. The
successful duo is no stranger to success inside and outside the
ring. Unbeaten in 25 fights (20 KOs), Abraham won the
prestigious German award for a second straight year, while
Wegner made it five first-place finishes in a row.
In a poll initiated by German boxing magazine Boxsport, Wegner
received 370 more votes than runner-up Michael Timm. "Becoming
coach of the year for a fifth straight time is a great honor,"
Wegner said. "It is really special because the competition has
grown much stronger. I`m flattered that the German boxing fans
appreciate my work."
Just like his coach, King Arthur also is a huge hit with German
fans, totalling 886 votes, 286 more than Wladimir Klitschko.
Abraham also edged Zsolt Erdei, Felix Sturm and Sebastian
Sylvester. "After breaking my jaw against Miranda I did not know
how the comeback would go but three title defences made 2007 a
very successful year for me," he said. "The award is a great
finish. I want to thank the German fans for their great
support."
