  Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Dicaire & Zewski Determined
To Win These Significant Bouts

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The Montrealer Marie-Eve Dicaire and Michael Zewski, from Trois-Rivières, Québec, will have significant bouts Friday evening at the Montréal Cabaret Casino. Dicaire (15-0-0) will proceed to the second defense of her IBF female super welterweight (154 pounds) championship of the world, against the Swedish Maria Lindberg (17-4-2), and Zewski (32-1-0), the WBC International welterweight champion, will face Abner Lopez (27-9-1), from Phoenix, Arizona, in a NABO and IBF North American championships.

“I saw Lindberg in action, then, I know exactly what to expect from her,” said Dicaire Thursday afternoon at the weigh in held at the Montréal Casino. “Lindberg has a big experience, she is a good puncher, but she does not have my mobility in the ring. Lindberg loves to attack, but I am positive I will dominate the fight with my counter-attacks. And with my mobility in the ring, I am positive I will confuse her in most of the rounds. I am more than confident to keep my world title in few hours.”

Lindberg, who scored nine KO or TKO in pro boxing replied: “I am sure it will be a great fight. Dicaire has a lot of skills, but my power and my experience will certainly make the difference in the result of this world championship bout. No doubt in my mind, I will leave Montréal with the IBF female crown in my luggage.”

On his side, Zewski is determinate to reach back the Top 10 of the international boxing ratings. “After my win over Lopez, my name will certainly appear in the Top 10 of the international boxing ratings,” said Zewski. “As you know, I was ranked few years ago before my only defeat in pro boxing (against the Russian Konstantin Ponomarev in 2015), and I am impatient to see again my name in the Top 10. I am actually ranked 14th by the WBC, then, I am close to my objective. I will take care of Lopez, and after, I will challenge two of the best welterweights in the world, Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia.”

Zewski has the conviction that he will score a spectacular win Friday evening. “I really want to win this fight by KO or TKO, and I believe I will do it in the sixth or seventh round, said Zewski. But the main thing is not to score a KO or a TKO, it’s to obtain a win which help me to take back my place in the Top 10 of the international boxing ratings.”

Lopez looked very calm at this weigh in. “I am perfectly prepared for this challenge, and I am more than optimistic to be in the winnings corner,” said Lopez. “Zewski is a good fighter, he proved it several times, but I know I have the technique and the power to win this important bout. I am very excited to get this opportunity to be ranked in the Top 10 of the international boxing ratings.”

This boxing show is presented by the GYM Group, with Yvon Michel as promoter.

At the weigh in supervised by the Québec Athletic Commission (Régie provinciale des sports de combat), Dicaire posted an official weight of 152.8 pounds, versus 150.2 for Lindberg, and Zewski posted an official weight of 147 pounds, versus 146.4 for Lopez.

“The two main fights of the evening are promised a lot of action,” said Bernard Barré, the scout of the GYM Group, “Dicaire is efficient technically, and her rival never lost a fight by KO or TKO. And I am extremely impatient to see the fight between Zewski and Lopez. Zewski has a great potential, he is good technically and he is a solid puncher, and his opponent proved many times he can give a lot of trouble to fighters ranked in the world.”

The super welterweight Francis Lafrenière (18-7-2), from Cöteau-du-Lac (Montréal West Island), the Montrealer light heavyweight Wilfred Seyi (5-0-0), the cruiserweight Yan Pellerin (7-1-0), from Granby, Québec, and the female welterweight Marie-Pier Houle (1-0-0), from Trois-Rivières, will be involved in the preliminaries bouts of the evening.

Lafrenière will fight the Mexican Jose Luis Zuniga (16-4-1, Seyi will meet the Mexican Brian Galvez (4-0-1), Pellerin will challenge the Mexican Michel Meija Borja (1-1-0) and finally, Houle will be opposed to Veronica Diaz Marin (0-2-0), also from Mexico.

At the weigh in, Lafrenière posted an official weight of 162.2 pounds, Zuniga 163.8, Seyi 171.6, Galvez 170.6, Pellerin 188.8, Borja 188.4, Houle 145.4 and finally, Marin 146.4 pounds.
