Jerson Aguilar Beats Marcos Rodriguez
By Unanimous Decision
Jerson Aguilar defeated Marcos "El Mudo" Rodríguez by
unanimous decision, 96-93, 97-94 and 96-93, to become the
new WBA Latin Lightweight Champion last night on
EstrellaTV’s monthly boxing series, Boxeo EstrellaTV. The
series occurs on the last Friday of every month and is
broadcast from BB Auditorium in Mexico City.
In the fiery main event, the courage and bravery of
Rodríguez put a dramatic and exciting touch to a fight that
had Jerson using medium and long ground to establish his
fight, and Marcos fighting back, always exchanging blows.
Dropping blows and not being a fixed target throughout the
fight was the strategy for Jerson’s - it made it difficult
for Rodriguez to effectively respond until the fifth round.
Tired, Aguilar was forced to exchange blows in the short
field, and that was when the balance began to tip in favor
of Rodriguez, who got Jerson in trouble on at least three
occasions to the brink of knockout, forcing the hug and
buying time to survive the round.
For the ninth and tenth rounds, the fight went from power
punch to power punch in search of a knockout; the judges
gave Aguilar the decision, winning his first professional
boxing title (though he won the 2014 edition of the
now-defunct Gold Belt).
The evening continued with a 10-round super featherweight
fight, as Jalisco’s Edgar “El Diablo” Espinoza defeated
Jalisco’s Jorge Luis Martínez by technical knockout at 1:46
in the ninth round.
Michoacán’s Edwin “Canito” Cano won by unanimous decision
over Luis Guadalupe “Kenso Juárez” Méndez, 60-54, 59-55 and
60-54, four-rounds at flyweight.
Mexico City’s Edwin Antonio Gutiérrez could not beat Japan’s
Takumu “Taquito” Hosooka, who prevailed by unanimous
decision, 36-40, 37-39 and 36-40, in a four-round
featherweight fight.
Roberto "Jaguar" Nava Diaz Sandi of the State of Mexico was
knocked out by Ismael "Borrego" Aviles from the State of
Mexico in just 36 seconds of the first round, fighting in
four rounds at super lightweight.
Eric Xavier “TNT” Fuentes of Mexico City defeated Andree
“Junior” Ocaña Álvarez of Mexico City by unanimous decision,
39-37, 39-37 and 39-38, in four-rounds at light flyweight.
Alexis Antonio “Wonder Boy” Velázquez of State of Mexico was
defeated by Puebla’s Francisco “Chito” Rodríguez, 36-39,
37-39 and 37-39, in a four-round super lightweight fight.
