"Thrill" Answers Fan Mail About Chris Byrd's Faith |
|
Will,
Enjoyed the interview...
Byrd sounds like a stand-up guy, but what is it with these
Christians in
boxing? How many of them have wound-up in prison for rape, drugs
or
violence, spent a couple of years there, found Christ and then
started
boxing again, only to wind-up in prison again!
At least Chris Byrd seems to have a solid family life...sounds
like he may
be one of the exceptions, but if only he could punch, then he'd
be a
superstar and we'd see how grounded he was!

Jose Navarro's New Year's Resolution:
I Want To Bring The WBC Belt Home |
|
By William Trillo
So, I am driving home from day 2 of the great Christmas present
exchange, when my cell phone rings and it's my good friend Mack
Kurihara. The trainer of 6 World Champions was in Japan and he
wanted to know if I had a few moments to chat with a fighter he
is doing some consulting for, # 1 WBC rated Super Flyweight Jose
Navarro (21-0, 9 KO's). They are in Japan as Navarro prepares to
take on WBC Super Flyweight Champ, Katsushige Kawashima (27-3,
18 KO's) this January 3rd at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo! I
told Mack that I would be home in 5 minutes and I would wait for
his call on my land line, and just as always, Mack was right on
time with his return phone call and he promptly handed the phone
over to Jose! "Let's start off 2005 the right way and then I
will have 3 things to celebrate when I get home!", says Navarro.
"Christmas, New Years and a World Title!"

Ringside LA With Johnny Ortiz
"Tarver Gets Jobbed"
Welcome To The World Of Boxing |
|
By Johnny "Flash" Ortiz
Robert Morales, a highly respected Los Angeles boxing writer,
opened his column Monday morning following Saturday night’s
tough fight between Antonio Tarver and Glenoffe Johnson with the
statement that nearly all of the veteran boxing writers on press
row had Antonio Tarver winning his fight against “The Road
Warrior” Glen Johnson. The New York Daily News and the
Associated Press both had Tarver 115-112. All three HBO
commentators plus their scorekeeper Harold Lederman, all had
Antonio Tarver winning the contest. When asked, Roy Jones was
quick to reply that in his estimation, Tarver had won. The
scores of the two judges favoring Johnson I’m told, outraged
Harold Lederman, who has been scoring all of the fights on HBO
for quite a few years. I would like to think that someone as
highly qualified as Roy Jones Jr. would know who won a fight.
Like a lot of the horrendous bad decisions we have been plagued
with over the past few years, absolutely nothing has or will be
done about it.

Erin Toughill Checks In From Japan |
|
This months Ring Girl, Erin Toughill is not only
a title holding boxer, but she also is a Mixed Martial Artist.
She has been in a tourney in Japan and she took some time to
update us and send all some Holiday Cheer!
Hello All!
Thought I might drop u a line. I won my first 2 fights by TKO.
First one in 27 seconds via knees and punches. I met the #1 girl
in the second round and won via KO w/ a straight right @ the end
of the round. She barely beat the count but did not want to
continue. Third fight I fought a girl whom I beat by breaking
her arm three years ago. I was beating the crap outta her and
she tried an illegal tactic by gabbing the glove and trying to
roll with it....she almost got it the first time and then tried
it again. I got pissed and elbowed her in the back.

Chris Byrd Responds To John Ruiz's Comments;
His Faith Keeps Him On The Right Track |

By William Trillo
By now we have all seen that WBA Heavyweight Champ John Ruiz and
his comical sidekick "Stoney" (isn't he still suspended?), have
called out IBF Heavy Champ Chris Byrd. It's been posted on
almost every website including our own!
What you won't see on another site is Chris Byrd's initial
reaction to Johnny and Stoney's comments.
You will however be able to read those comments here and only
here, because we went straight to The Champ to see what he had
to say about all this, along the way we spoke to Chris about his
Christian faith and what it means to him as a fighter and a man.
"James Toney, John Ruiz, I really want to fight Klitschko, they
are possibilities that can be done with Don King for my next
fight!", says Byrd. "But whatever happens, really! I don't care
who it is, where we fight or what it's for, I just want to stay
active and keep fighting!"

Ruiz offered. “Let him bring two referees if he wants. This
fight can easily be made because we have the same promoter (Don
King). All it takes is a phone call by Byrd. I’ll sign a
contract tomorrow. I just don’t want it to be a cat fight

the "Boxer of the Year" award and Felix "Tito" Trinidad was

We all know the merits that each one of these boxers

four times in 2004, starting with a KO over Victoriano Sosa, a
unanimous decision over Lovemore NDou, KO over another prospect
in Kelson Pinto and with this win he won the W.B.O. 140 pound
title and he finished (or pounded, whichever you prefer) the

Robert Guerrero: The "Holy" Ghost |
|
By William Trillo
In a business with a stigma and a reputation built on scandal,
and a sport that continues to give itself a black eye, seemingly
with every promotion, it's not only refreshing, but at the same
time an awakening to find that boxing and the people who connect
themselves with it are not always what those on the outside
looking in perceive them to be. Case in point, NABF
Featherweight Title holder, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (14-0-1,
7 KO's). In his short 15 fight career, the lanky young man from
Gilroy California has already accomplished his first goal, and
with 2005 nothing short of a World Title shot will do. Inside
the ring he is as tough as they come, a sharp puncher who prides
himself on his conditioning and his willingness to seize the
moment. "My plans for 2004 were to win a title, and that's what
I did!", says Guerrero. "For 2005, my plans are to win that
World Title!"

Jason Estrada’s Pro Debut a Big Hit |
|
The much anticipated pro debut of 2004 U.S.
Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada two weeks ago (Dec. 10) at
Foxwoods Resort Casino was the first step on his mission to
prove to the boxing world that he’ll be an even better pro than
amateur.
In his first fight as a pro against a game Joseph Reyes Kenneth
(3-4, 2 KOs), the 24-year-old Estrada floored his opponent once
en route to a unanimous four-round decision (40-35, 40-35,
40-34) in a match he dominated, at the very least, by the margin
indicated by the final scoring.
“I felt that I had a lot to prove,” Jason said after the fight.
“Some people were saying I wasn’t going to be what I was hyped
up to be. I felt great.”

Our Readers Are Important To Us! |
|
Have you ever noticed that some of the fightsites
out there don't even acknowledge the fact they have readers?
It's as if they don't even exist and are of no value at all!
We here at Pound4Pound.com realize that our readers come before
anything else and without you, we are nothing!
That is why we are happy to post your emails right on the front
page with all the rest of our articles. We know that you are
informed and that you have opinions!
Take the most recent letter we received this morning in regards
to
Heavyweights Duckin' Heavyweights:
Read your article and I believe you are absolutely correct in
saying that the promoters (mainly Don King) is what’s holding
back the Heavyweight division from being a free for all battle.
We didn’t have these hang-ups it seems back in the days. When we
had Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, George Foreman, Ernie Shavors,
Leon Spinks Etc…That was the real Heavyweight division, where
anyone on their best day was ready to fight and there was no
question on making it happen. However, we cannot sit here and
completely blame the promoters. The fighters are as much to
blame as anyone else. The boxers have a choice on how they sign
off on contracts. If you give total responsibility to the
promoter on who you fight next, then who is the fool? If you
remember, Ali also had Don King as a promoter at one time. Ali
also told King that he fought whomever he wanted, and King’s job
was to make sure that all was promoted to the highest level.
Trinidad had the same problem with King at the beginning of
King’s promotions, then that all got changed, where you noticed
it was always mentioned that King and PAPA Trinidad had to sit
down and discuss who was going to be next opponent for Tito. I
tip my hat off to Hopkins for not allowing King to dictate on
how his career would end up.
My opinion on the Heavyweight rankings is that it seems that
James Toney is regarded in several rankings as a top contender
for a title shot or close to one. I don’t think that is fair at
all. Trust me I do think he has a winning chance with almost all
of the titlists, but he has only fought in the Heavyweight
division for a few years. So what he fought Holyfield!
He also fought a washed up, doesn’t know when to retire
Holyfield. Before Toney gets any title shots, I would like to
see him fight a fighter that has fought well and is not near as
retirement status as Holyfield was and is. Why not put Toney
against contenders like, David Tua, Hasim Rahman, Andrew Golota,
or Corrie Sanders. This way he can show if he can take a
hard-hitting punch from a fighter who is not technically washed
up.
On Vitali, I believe in bringing his “A” game he can clean up
the Heavyweight division, with the exception of Chris Byrd. Not
to say Vitali cannot beat him, but we know Byrd is not going to
stand and exchange with Vitali. Therefore, in this case we would
see a in shape Byrd equipped with track shoes to make sure he
doesn’t get hit with a Vitali hammer.
John Ruiz and Lamon Brewster are only a punch away from being
KO’d. It will eventually happen. When it does, no one will be
surprised, but instead asking on why it didn’t happen earlier in
their career.
Thanks, Lou “Duva” Figueroa

Last week was as busy a time as one could
ask for at The La Habra Boxing Club. The small gym,
tucked away in the uppermost tip of Orange County

performing in Los Angeles on 2 different cards. Photo:

Light Heavy Julio Gonzalez (37-2,23 KO's), and Super
Middles Librado Andrade (21-0,15 KO's) and Enrique
Ornelas (20-1, 13 KO's), who all began their boxing
careers in La Habra as youths just looking for a place
to hang out, did what they do best, and all three were
successful.

Tarver vs. Johnson - Just A Good Fight |

Johnson and Antonio Tarver gave
us a closeout to 2004 with a boxing fight that was
actually...GOOD! No, it wasn’t a “fight of the year”. No there
wasn’t any Barrera vs. Morales type of exchanges. But, this was
a very respectable fight that deserves, and will get, a rematch.
A fight that most fans probably needed after all that been going
on in boxing lately. There may have been dull points in this
fight as it wasn’t the most of entertaining, but for Johnson and
Tarver, the two boxed for 12 rounds, and that’s that. It’s been
a while since two fighters did just that. No clowning around or
“go ahead, hit me on the chin while I drop my hands” type of
tactics. A good, clean fight.

Julio Takes Telesco To The Schoolyard |
|
By William Trillo
|
In
the closing bout, Julio Gonzalez (36-2, 22 KO's)
stopped David Telesco (29-4-1, 24 KO's) after
Telesco fell into the ropes and Gonzalez
unleashed a combination of punches that prompted
the referee to jump in and halt the action at
1:06 of the 8th. In a fight |
|
|
that was admittedly a
make or break situation for the former WBO Champion,
Julio Gonzalez came through and held on to his hopes of
regaining another shot at the title in this seesaw
battle with David Telesco, who also was in the same
position as Gonzalez and now is on the outside looking
in. Click

Let the fighters speak for themselves |

By
William Trillo
Glen Johnson: "At the end of the fight, and before they read
the scores, I was worried about the score and my heart was
beating pretty fast, but it beating pretty regularly now!"
"We had a plan for this fight, and that was to go 12 hard
rounds, I think Tarver was looking for a knockout. But anything
that he gave me, I took it!"
Antonio Tarver: "In my heart of hearts, I felt I did enough
to win, but that's boxing!"
"Congratulations to Glen, we will be back!"
"I am not thinking about fighting anyone but Glen Johnson, I
want the opportunity to get my titles back!"

Johnson Split Decisions Tarver For The Win |
|
Glen Johnson scores a split decision win over
Antonio Tarver in a fight that matched the two Roy Jones
conquerors! A fight that may have been too close to score was
back and forth from the opening round. Johnson came right at
Tarver in round 1 to bully him on the ropes. Tarver came back to
stagger Johnson is the later rounds. In round 12 the two went
toe to toe in the center of the ring, Tarver staggering Johnson
in the 1st half, then Johnson staggering Tarver at the end!
Final scores were 116-112 for Tarver, and 115-113 x 2 for
Johnson.
Pound4Pound.com scored it a draw.
Notes: The Staples Center holds 19,000, only 9,126 were in

Undercard Results From The Staples Center |
|
In the closing bout, Julio Gonzalez stopped David
Telesco after Telesco fell into the ropes and Gonzalez unleashed
a combination of punches that prompted the referee to jump in
and halt the action at 1:06 of the 8th. Gonzales is in hopes to
get a shot at Glen Johnson.
Tarvis Simms, brother to Travis, won a split decision over
Carlos Bojorquez on scores of 76-74 x 2 for Simms and 77-73 for
Bojorquez. Simms was down and deducted a point early the 2nd
round.
2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward scored a 2nd round TKO
over Christian Molina (now 2-1) in his professional debut. In
the 1st round, Molina tried bullying Ward and intimidation
tactics by talking to him. A straight left hand by Ward dropped
Molina in the 1st. In between rounds, Molina said "My legs are
tired", giving the words of an almost beat fighter. In round 2,
another left hand landed and Molina went down to one knee. As he
rose, he kept blinking his right eye and the referee prompted
the fight over at just :40 into the 2nd.
Mia St. John stopped Janae Archuletta in 1:46 of the 1st round.
Archuletta appeared to be able to continue, but the ref prompted
an early win for Mia who ups her record to 38 wins, 4 losses
with 16 KO's. On a side note, Mia previously faced Archulett
twice in October of this year, and once in 2002, beating her
each time on 4 round decisions. Janae now has a record of 4
wins, 10 losses, 1 draw with 2 KO's! Mia should be ashamed for
taking on such competition.
In the opening bout of the night Vinnie Maddalone (22-2,15
KO's) took on the 298 pound Ronnie Smith (6-32,6 KO's). Even
though the "big fat blob" outweighed Vinnie by some 60 pounds,
Maddalone managed to drag his fat carcass around the ring for
the entire 6 round affair taking a unanimous decision on all
cards 60-54.

Julio Gonzalez Is Looking For Another Title Shot |
|
By William Trillo
Pound4Pound.com sat down with former WBO Light Heavyweight
Champion Julio Gonzalez before his last day of sparring and got
his view of his upcoming battle against the always tough David
Telesco (29-4-1, 24 KO's) which will be featured on the
undercard of the biggest Light Heavy fight to come along in
years, that being Antonio Tarver vs. Glen Johnson.
"This fight is going to make me or break me.", says Gonzalez.
"The titles are vacant right now...but if I win I should be
placed in the top 5, so there should be a good chance for a
title shot after that."
