Taylor Needs Some Tailoring;
Berto Looks Dressed To Kill |

Teddy Blackburn - DBE
Jermain Taylor and Andre Berto both won fights they were
supposed to win last weekend, so the question is, what
did they accomplish, and what did we learn about them?
In Berto's
case, the unbeaten welterweight prospect with the super-fast
hands and crunching power, took another step up the ladder in
impressive fashion. Until truly tested, he appears as
advertised, a future champion. Even for an Olympian, he
demonstrated poise and discipline and mixed up his repertoire of
punches like a more seasoned veteran. He looks like the real
deal. Give us more Berto.

Barrera/Pacquiao/Navarro |
|
The World Boxing Council has notified the camps
of WBC super featherweight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera
and WBC mandatory contender Manny Pacquiao that the free
negotiations period for their mandatory title defense has begun.
If no agreement is reached, the WBC will conduct a purse offer
on January 12, 2007, in Mexico City.
The WBC received the following report from Joe Koizumi:
WBC super-flyweight champ Masamori Tokuyama, Japan, officially
renounced his belt through the Japan Boxing Commission. He kept
his throne by outscoring the top contender Jose Navarro last
February, and hasn’t fought since for some 10 months. He will
move up to the bantam category to anticipate a shot at the WBC
118-pound belt against Japan’s Hozumi Hasegawa, who, however,
seems reluctant to face Tokuyama in a voluntary defense. If so,
it might be a question whether Tokuyama will go on fighting
until he becomes the WBC’s official challenger, since he
declares that he will sing a swan song in his one and only big
game next.

Taylor Wins 12 Rounds To 0 Over Non Stop Ouma.
The Middleweight Couldn't Put Away
The Welterweight |
|
Jermain Taylor (now 26-0, 17 KO's) tried his best to score a
knockout over Kassim Ouma, but ended up wasting early energy
that led to a scorecards fight. In the opening round, Taylor
came out swinging wildly, leaving himself wide open for Ouma to
counter. Ouma would end up walking into some of Taylor power
shots, but Ouma never rattled or wobbled enough and just kept
coming. In round 2, Taylor began to hold as Ouma kept walking
Taylor down, often walking into more power punches. In round 4,
a huge right hand stopped Ouma in his tracks. Then a 3 punch
combo that seemingly would have floored Ouma, did not. Ouma just
kept coming. In round 5, referee Frank Garza warned Taylor for
the constant holding. Taylor getting very tired, gets a cut over
the left eye which was ruled an accidental headbutt. In round 6,
Ouma appeared to get in the swing of things and started landing
early, but his punches wouldn't have much of an impact as Taylor
would end the round with power punches that would knock the
sweat off Ouma's head and get a big reaction from the Arkansas
crowd. In round 7, Ouma again starting out good, catching Taylor
with several shots, but none strong enough to phase Taylor.
Taylor appearing very tired now, backing up with his hands down,
but catching Ouma with a big shot walking in. The same would
repeat itself for the remainder of the fight, Ouma walking in,
non stop and relentless, but getting caught with some big shots
that left the bigger impact. Final scores were 118-110, 117-111
and an odd 115-113??? The tough Ouma falls to 25-3-1 with 15
KO's.

Andre Berto Stops Miguel Figueroa In 6th
Respect To Figueroa For The
Performance He Displayed |
|
Andre Berto (now 16-0, 14 KO's) put a virtual beat down on
Miguel Figueroa through 6 rounds in his HBO debut. In the first
round, Figueroa was hit with nearly every punch in Berto's
arsenal and you had to think to yourself 'how is this kid still
standing?'. In round 2, more of Berto's onslaught with Figueroa
against the ropes. Figueroa takes them all and actually comes
back with two right hands of his own. In round 3, a jab from
Berto landed on the chest of Figueroa and dropped him, but
referee Lawrence Cole ruled it a slip. In round 5, Berto's
punches finally making their presence known as Figueroa begins
to tire, but still unphased by the power bombs. In between
rounds, Figueroa tells his corner "I can't make it.", to which
his trainer replied "Don't quit on this stool.". Figueroa
bravely and courageously went out and continued fighting to the
best of his ability, but a right hand from Berto would drop
Figueroa's guard and another combination called the referee in
to finally stop the punishment at 1:59 of the 6th. Figueroa
falls to 24-6-1 with 14 KO's.

Calzaghe clocking Taylor |
|
Joe Calzaghe can't
wait to finally fight in the United States, a desire Calzaghe's
critics have long questioned, despite the undisputed super
middleweight champ's insistence. But with Wright (51-3-1, 25
KOs) pricing himself out of a
Jermain Taylor rematch and Taylor having more
difficulty making 160 pounds, Calzaghe (42-0, 31 KOs) senses his
debut on American soil is imminent. If Taylor defeats Ouma and
Sergio Mora (19-0, 4 KOs), probably Taylor's next opponent, and
Calzaghe tops Peter Manfredo
Jr. (26-3, 12 KOs) on March 3 in Cardiff, Wales,
Calzaghe hopes to fight Taylor next summer.

We spoke to WBO Welterweight Champ
Antonio Margarito's manager this week and he confirmed the
injury to "Tony's" right wrist suffered in the Clottey
battle and said the doctor has ordered Margarito to take 2
months off of training to allow the wrist to fully heal.
Margarito's reaction was as expected saying, "I can't afford
to take 2 months off!"
Frankly we agree. With a mandatory
challenge due against # 1 Paul Williams and a talked
about date with Miguel Cotto in June, it's hard to imagine
how Antonio can take 2 months off and get ready for both
high profile fights. Hopefully his rehab can go much quicker
than the doctor ordered and he can get himself prepared in
time for both battles. The public sees the Williams bout as
a must for "Tony" and it appears Top Rank is set on having
the big match up with Cotto in June. Only time will tell.

This Saturday night on the HBO televised
Jermain Taylor vs. Kassim Ouma
Middleweight championship bout from Little Rock, Arkansas,
hot welterweight prospect Andre Berto (15-0, 13 KO's) will
be featured in the Semi Main event as he puts his undefeated
record on the line against journeyman Miguel Figueroa

This will be the first time for many to
see the highly touted 147 pounder in action and it is a
can't miss fight. The soft spoken Berto is quietly making
his way up in the rankings but it's time for the young man
to make some noise and this night in the spotlight is the
perfect time for Andre to display his wares.
We spoke to Berto about this night and
what it means to him and we know it's something you are
going to want to hear.

Saturday Night Live On HBO |
|
The world’s premier middleweight champ puts his
title on the line when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: JERMAIN TAYLOR
VS. KASSIM OUMA AND ANDRE BERTO VS. MIGUEL FIGUEROA is seen live
from the Alltel Arena in Little Rock on SATURDAY, DEC. 9 (10:00
p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT& 9:00 p.m. CT). The HBO Sports team of Jim
Lampley, Larry Merchant and Lennox Lewis will be ringside for
the event, which will be available in HDTV.
Coming off two hotly contested victories – both against former
undisputed middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins – and a
hard-fought draw versus the accomplished Winky Wright, emerging
superstar and Little Rock native Jermain Taylor (25-0-1, 17 KOs)
returns to the friendly confines of home to take on Kassim Ouma
(25-2-1, 15 KOs), originally from Kampala, Uganda, and now
living in West Palm Beach, Fla., in a scheduled 12-round
championship fight. Taylor, a 2000 U.S. Olympic bronze medal
winner, has been on a fast track to stardom in the division,
thanks to his fearless approach. Former junior middleweight
champ Ouma began boxing as a child soldier in Uganda and
defected to escape the country’s brutal regime while in the U.S.
on an amateur boxing trip. Having risen to tough challenges in
the past, he will face his biggest test to date.
In the opening bout, Andre Berto (15-0, 13 KOs), from Winter
Haven, Fla., battles Camden, NJ native Miguel Figueroa (24-5-2,
14 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round bout. Boasting an undefeated
record and near-perfect knockout-to-win ratio, Berto, a 2004
Olympian, is considered a top welterweight prospect. Figueroa, a
battle-tested contender, looks to establish himself as the
holiday surprise of the division by handing Berto his first loss
at 147 pounds.

Next Up For Champion
Valuev...Jameel
McCline |
|
WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev will travel to
Switzerland on January 20th to defend his title against American
Jameel McCline. The unbeaten Russian, will be taking on another
under achiever in McCline who has lost only six of his 47
fights, but has always come up "short" when it mattered most.
This will be a Battle of Giants though, Valev is measured
at 7 ft. and Jameel tops out at 6 feet 6 inches. A Victory over
McCline would take the giant Russian a step closer to matching
the late Rocky Marciano's 49-0 undefeated career mark.

The Heat Is On Results
Wright Gives Quartey First Non-Controversial Loss |
|
Damon ”Latinbox”
Gonzalez & "Threat" Ringside
Photos: Bret "The Threat" Newton
Middleweight Ronald Wright decisioned Ike Quartey
over 12 rounds with pretty
convincing scores of 117-110 | 117-110 | 117-109
Winky Wright was
simply more active and more precise than Ike Quartey.
Quartey still made it a fight and was the only reason
this fight saw any action. Wright backed the entire
fight as Ike move forward trying to land his power
combinations. Wright's defense would have Quartey
hitting the arms and gloves, something all of Quartey's
past opponents are accustomed to with him. Wright would
control the 1st half of the fight where Ike found it
difficult to get behind Wright's guard with his shotgun
jab. Two ruled knockdowns which were a trip and slip
should not have counted. Wright doesn't need help from
the referee to win a fight and those two calls were
extremely absurd. The 2nd, Ike didn't even touch the
canvas and was counted down. Ike had his best rounds
near the end of the fight were Wright did his typical
showing off and inviting his opponent in while on the
ropes. Wright would just be showing off his brilliant
defense, but Quartey would get in his best attack and
landed some body shots that had the crowd booing their
hometown hero for letting Quartey in like that. Quartey
gave it his best shot against the best fighter in the
world according to pound4pound.com, and showed he still
has enough in him to beat nearly any fighter at 154
where he plans to fight at least one more time. Ike has
a great chance of winning a title when looking at the
champs: Jose River holds the WBA, Corey Spinks holds the
IBF, and Oscar DeLaHoya holds the WBC. Some good
possibilities for Ike there, what about the rematch
everyone wanted to see? Well Wright made it clear he
wanted the winner of Mayweather vs. DeLaHoya, so that
may be out of the question for now.
Super Middleweight Jeff Lacy looked a lot less than
dominant with a Majority Decision win over Vitali Tsypko
in 10. Scores read 95-95| 96-94| 96-94. Worthy to note
is the final round which 2 judges gave to Tsypko while
the other gave it to Lacy, which begs to ask the
question, huh? what?
Jose Angel Rodriguez the “Silver Boy” from New York
goes 9-0 with an unanimous decision 80-70 on all three
judges score cards against Richard “Tiger” Hall 10-16-1.
Billy the Kid Dibb out boxes Phillip “Bring the” Payne

Cotto
Overpowers Quintana In Stunning Fashion
Now Owns WBA 147 lb. Leather
Photos: Chris Farina - Top Rank
Miguel
Cotto's move to 147 pounds seems like a perfect fit.
Like a wrecking ball, Cotto went through Carlos Quintana
and the battle was stopped at the end of round 5 as
Quintana sat on his stool and told his corner men, " I
can't do it, I am dead!"
The
beginning of the end came midway through round five as
Cotto landed a huge hook to the liver that appeared to
be enough to end the bout, but in true warrior fashion
Quintana got up and although he went down again under
the relentless pressure and power of Cotto, he got up to
hear the bell signifying the end of round five. That was
the last bell to ring in Atlantic City on this night of
fights.
The
bout started out rough, and it was obvious the weight of
Puerto Rico was on the shoulders of both men. It was
fast, it was furious, and all truth be told, Quintana
was doing well and it even appeared Cotto was a bit
confused and was chasing his fellow countryman as
opposed to cutting off the ring. Quintana was doing well
in the first 3 rounds, but he began pawing at his right
eye early and that was the first sign that Cotto's power
was taking an early toll. As the fight went on
Quintana's face began to show the signs of a good
beating. But, it was not until round five that things
really changed, and it was when Cotto switched up and
went Southpaw against his lefty foe, and for whatever
reason, that was when Cotto took over for good. The
liver shot did the real damage and the rest of the
punches were just icing on the proverbial cake.
If
anyone was watching to see if Cotto could make a smooth
transition to Welterweight, and we were, the answer is
most assuredly YES. Miguel Cotto is going to be a force
to be reckoned with at 147 pounds, make no mistkae about
it. Whether it is his mandatory defense against Oktay
Urkal or a Top Rank match up with Antonio Margarito,
Cotto is not to be taken lightly, he seems to be on a
serious mission now. That mission is to take on whatever
challenge is ahead of him, and more importantly, it is
to be recognized among other Puerto Rican greats like
Tito Trinidad and Wilfredo Gomez." I hope that one of
these days I can be like them," said the victorious
Cotto.
Margarito Defeats Clottey Over 12 "Hands Down"
Antonio Margarito took a hard fought decision over
Joshua to retain his WBO 147 pound strap. As it turns
out both fighters came out of this bout with busted
wings. Clottey claims to have come into the bout with a
bad left hand and said he also hurt his right hand
during the scrap. Margarito on the "other hand" said he
hurt his right wrist sometime around round 5 and it
affected him from that point on.
Be that as it may, it looked as though Clottey took the
first four rounds pretty handily and it was sometime in
the fifth that the tide started to turn and Margarito
took over. Without a doubt both fighters more than proved
they were willing to battle through whatever ailed them.
Clottey never gave up and Margarito showed the mettle of
a true Champion as he fought hard all the way to the
final bell. After the bout Margarito said he did feel
the rust of a 10 month lay-off but after the fifth round
he felt he was in control.
As to his mandatory challenge with # 1 ranked Paul
Williams, Antonio said, " Well,
if he
is the # 1 guy then we want to fight him!" Final tallies

Argentina's Mariano Natalio Carrera (30-4, 21
KOs) dethroned Javier Castillejo (61-7, 41 KOs)
in controversial fashion to claim the WBA
middleweight title. Panamanian referee Guillermo
Perez called a very quick halt to a competitive
bout at 1:53 of the eleventh round, prompting
Castillejo's trainer Ricardo Atocha to go after
Perez. Atocha had to be held back by security.
It was Castillejo's first defense of the title. |

Unofficial Puerto Rico Poll
Which Star From The
Island Will Rise To The Top?
|
|
|
Over the past couple of weeks our ace
reporter on the island conducted a simple poll. The
question:
"Who will win the fight, between
Miguel Cotto and Carlos "El Indio" Quintana?"
A simple poll and the results are not
what most outside of the island would expect. In fact, this
poll may open more than just the eyes of those not living on
Puerto Rican soil.
The results:
Miguel Cotto: 52 votes
Carlos "El Indio" Quintana: 37 votes
Basically, that's about a 60-40 clip
with the slight nod going in favor of the former Jr.
Welterweight champ.
I'll bet no one even knew who Quintana
was last year and now he is in position to pull off a major
upset, and many on the island think he can...don't miss it!

Boricua Braggin'
Rights…And More |

|
Written By Puerto Rican Lead Journalist Luis "The Beast" Cadiz
I was looking through my closet a few moments ago, getting
tomorrow’s work clothes in order, when I stumbled upon a shirt
that was hanging towards the back of the closet. “The Wright
Choice. The Wright Challenge”. Saturday, May 14th, 2005, it
reads on the back. TRINIDAD VS. WRIGHT in big bold
letters cover the rest of the back of the shirt and on the
front, a PIC of both fighters with the same bold lettering
beneath the photo. In smaller case letters above the picture it
reads, TITO, TITO. Memories of Felix “Tito” Trinidad’s
fights began to rush through my mind and a hint of that feeling
we Puerto Ricans get when we remember his bouts.
