Ibragimov vs. Austin Fight For #1 Spot On July 28 |
|
|
It’s the goal
of all professional prizefighters – to be called ‘Champion’.
And to get to that level, it takes years of
blood, sweat, and tears, and a commitment to excellence that few
can even fathom.
Sultan Ibragimov and Ray Austin have paid
these dues, and when a winner is declared in their IBF
Heavyweight Title Elimination Bout at the Seminole Hard Rock
Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida on Friday, July 28, that victor
will be just one win away from the title of World Champion.

Zab Judah / Signs with Prize Fight Boxing |
|
|
He’s one of boxing’s best, pound
for pound, a charismatic athlete with the talent to beat anyone
in the world on any given night. And now, former welterweight
and junior welterweight champion
Zab Judah - with the co-promotional team of
Prize Fight Boxing
behind him - is ready to once again conquer the boxing world and
show everyone how ‘Super’ Judah gets things done.
“I’m excited to be working with the
Prize Fight Boxing team, and I’m ready to get back in the ring
and settle some unfinished business,” said Judah, whose
promotional company Super Promotions is partnering with Prize
Fight Boxing. “All the champions better enjoy their belts now,
because I’m coming back to claim what’s mine.”
“This is an important day in the
history of Prize Fight Boxing, and we’re honored to have a boxer
the caliber of Zab Judah on our team,” said
Brian Young,
President of Prize Fight Boxing.
“He’s one of the sport’s best, and it’s just a matter of time
before he’s on top of the pound for pound list.”
Zab Judah (34-4, 25 KOs), a speedy
southpaw with pop in each hand, turned pro in 1996 after a
stellar amateur career. He won the IBF junior welterweight
title in 2000 and made five successful defenses before a loss to
Kostya Tszyu. In 2004, Judah moved up to welterweight,
and in February of 2005, he won the undisputed world title by
stopping Cory Spinks
in nine rounds. In Judah’s last fight, he dropped a
controversial 12 round decision to
Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
and he is eager to get redemption as soon as possible.
Terms of the co-promotional deal
were not released. Judah is expected back in the ring this fall
against an opponent to be determined.

Rahman Free From Mandatory
With Win Over Oleg? |

Not According To Dan Goossen,
"That Statement Is Wrong!"
By William Trillo
Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com had the good
fortune of talking to Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor
Promotions and we got to ask him about the upcoming James
Toney vs. Sam Peter bout in Los Angeles on Sept 2nd. We also
inquired with Dan about Hasim Rahman's strange press release
that claims a victory over Oleg Maskaev somehow lets him out
of his already WBC mandated defense against James Toney.
Boxing2006: Can you comment on the press
release Hasim Rahman issued last week that claims Rahman is
free and clear of his mandatory defense against James if he
defeats Oleg Maskaev in August?
Dan Goossen: Well first I would
have to see that release, but that statement would be
inaccurate, it if it as you say, that statement is wrong.

Former Undisputed World Welterweight Champion Cory Spinks: “I
guarantee you a victory.” |
|
Roman “Made in Hell’’ Karmazin (34-1-1, 1 ND, 21 KOs) will
defend his IBF 154-pound title against former undisputed world
welterweight champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (34-3,
11 KOs) in Spinks’ hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday,
July 8, on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed in the west coast).
The 12-round bout is promoted by Don King Productions.
Cory Spinks
“All I have done in camp is train, sleep and eat. I apologize to
my fans for the last fight, but I guarantee you a victory. I am
ready for anything Karmazin will bring. I am going to win this
fight. I can predict that.
“I know Karmazin is a
good fighter and a hard worker. I do not underestimate
him. He is a world champion and I can’t take that away
from him. As far as him not fearing me, he should
because he has never fought anyone like me.
“In my last fight against Judah (Feb. 5, 2005), I had to
lose too much weight. I was planning on moving up (in
weight) but I didn’t. I don’t feel I have ring rust.
Boxing is my talent, my gift. No one can teach you that.
It is a gift from God. I inherited it. It is a
blessing.’’
Kevin Cunningham (Trainer)
“I’m not worried about ring rust with Cory. We did not
prepare differently from any other fight. We just
prepared longer. Instead of training seven weeks out, we
trained 12 weeks and boxed 275 rounds. We did enough to
get rid of any ring rust, but that will show in the
fight.
“We’re more relaxed in this fight than his last. He is
not dealing with personal problems, and weight is not an
issue. This will be a spectacular performance and Cory
will return with the Spink Jinx in full effect Saturday
on SHOWTIME.’’

Former IBC light welterweight champion Corey
“Primetime” Johnson continues his climb to the top July 14 when
he fights Jose Varela for the vacant WBC Continental Americas
super welterweight championship at the South Coast Casino in Las
Vegas.
Johnson (33-2-2, 11 KOs) is coming off of a May 5th second-round

“I’m back and better than ever at 154 pounds,” the stylish
southpaw Johnson said. “I’m much stronger at this weight and all
of the experience I’ve gained over the years will help me school
some of these so-called contenders. I’ve been where they want to
go - fighting for the world title. Now my goal is to win a title
belt within a year and then unify the titles at super
welterweight.”
Varela, the former Nicaraguan welterweight champion, has been in
title fights against the likes of Marco Antonio Rubio (20-1-1)
and Edison Miranda (22-0).
Johnson is promoted by Silverhawk Boxing, managed by Rider
Boxing, and trained by Henry Hill.

Roman “Made in Hell’’ Karmazin (34-1-1, 1

former undisputed world welterweight champion Cory “The
Next Generation” Spinks (34-3, 11 KOs) in Spinks’
hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday, July 8, on

"USS" Cunningham (19-0, 10 KOs) and Guillermo "El Felino"
Jones (33-3-2, 26 KOs) will square off for the vacant
IBF cruiserweight belt.
ROMAN KARMAZIN (34-1-1, 1 ND, 21 KOs)
“I feel great. I have prepared better for this fight
than any other fight. This week is not as important to
me as far as training. The hardest part is already done.
This week I am focusing on regaining my strength.
“The fact that I am in Cory Spinks’ hometown gives me
the extra push to better prepare. Spinks is a good
fighter, I have respect for him, but I don’t fear him.
If there were any fears, I would not be in this fight.
“This fight is what I worked for my entire life, step by
step, opponent by opponent, to prove to people I am the
best.
“There are a lot of big names in boxing. I want to
become one of them and then get rid of the names in my
division.’’
KARMAZIN TRAINER, BORIS ZYKANOV
“Roman is a good puncher and a smart fighter; I’m not
worried about him taking on Spinks. Yes, Spinks is very
fast, but Roman has great timing. He has worked very
hard in his training. He looks better than he usually
looks.
“The preparation has been different. We have worked a
lot more on his stamina.’’

“Dan Donnelly is a legend in

the macabre journey of his mummified right arm. Why anyone would
want a grisly souvenir of Ireland’s first bare knuckle champion
is a mystery, but the very fact remains the powerful arm that
once felled great pugilists, would become a part of a traveling

Pacquiao vs. Larios Is
A Real Head Turner
Almost Everyone Caught Off Guard
With The 12 Round Scrap
|
|
|
By Will "The Thrill" Trillo
Okay, I was wrong, Larios did not upset Manny. Now it's time
for all of you to admit you were wrong as well. That's
right, you! The ones who picked Manny in an early
destruction of the blown up featherweight, in fact, now that
I am reviewing, I think my prefight breakdown was a lot
closer than most of you armchair trainers, and I know it was
a lot closer than most of the so called experts as well, and
I'm sure it turned their heads.
Distractions were my major concern going into this Fight for
Manny, he is a national hero, and rightly so. But the perks
that come with being the treasure of your country are not
always conducive to those who call a boxing ring their
office. Even the PPV telecast made mention of the fact that
just this week alone Manny was swarmed by fans and media
alike, and that's just this week, never mind the weeks
leading up to the fight. But, somehow Manny was able to
overcome all those outside obstacles and performed well on
Saturday night. So my hats off to you Mr. Pacquiao, you
turned my head with your workmanlike performance.

Pacquiao Dominates Larios Through 12 -
Wright, Take Notes! Pacquiao
Well Ahead After 11, Including 1 Previous Knockdown, Fights 12th
Round Hard, Even Scores Another Knockdown |
|
Manny Pacquiao (now 42-3-2 with 32 KO's) was just too fast for
Oscar Larios. This fight was not determined on power, but by
speed. Pacquiao's quickness enabled him to get in and out,
counter effectively and drop Larios twice en route to what was a
near shutout on the judges scorecards.
Oscar Larios has 2 good
rounds where it looked like he had a chance. In round 3,
Larios was able to back Pacquiao up to the ropes and
then followed up with a huge right hand a left hook that
landed flush and dropped Pacquiao's hands. Any other
130lb fighter would have gone down from that left hook,
but Pacquiao's chin proved strong and he was able to
come back in that round to stagger Larios, including
opening up a cut over Larios' left eye. In round 6, the
beginning of the end was near as Pacquiao's jab and
counter straight right hand was beginning to land at
will as Larios could not get in any clean punches. In
round 7, a right hand, left hand combo put Larios down
for the first time in the fight. In round 11, Larios
again had another big round as Pacquiao was tired and
began to drop his hands giving Larios plenty of openings
which he took advantage of, landing both the straight
right and left hooks, but again, Pacquiao's chin is very
underestimated as he took them well and came back at the
end of the round again. In the 12th round, Pacquiao
clearly had won at least 9 of the previous 11 rounds,
including a 10-8 round for the 7th round knockdown.
Pacquiao comes out, and FIGHTS! He doesn't run, he
doesn't show confidence in that he's got the fight
already won by showboating or staying away. HE FIGHTS!
Pacquiao sealed the deal with another combination of
three lefts and one right hand that dropped Larios for
the second time. It was more the accumulation and
punishment he had taken through the whole 12 rounds, but
Larios' showed courage and the heart of a champion in
getting up and fighting each round to the best of his
ability. Final scores were 117-110, 118-108 and 120-106.
Larios falls to 56-5-1 with 36 KO's.
Undercard Action:
An absolutely horrible stoppage saved Jimrex Jaca (now
26-2-1 with 11 KO's) in a fight he was pitching a
shutout through 6 rounds until he got overconfident and
Hector Marquez was able to take the advantage and have
his lone, yet best, round of the fight in what he
appeared to score a knockdown that was ruled a slip, as
well as several clean shots that had Jimrex's smile
turned upside down and prompted him to hold on. A cut
over the left eye of Jaca from round 1 that was ruled a
headbutt by the referee, caused a point taken away from
the uncut fighter to start things off. It would be that
cut the referee was able to use as reason for stoppage
as a stream of blood ran down the side of Jaca's face as
he was holding on, trying to make it out of the 7th
round, but the fact remains, the cut wasn't bad enough
for the fight to be stopped and Jaca looked to be on his
way down and the referee saw an advantage to help Jaca
out. Final time was 2:08 of the 7th round. Scores were
60-52 on all cards. Marquez falls to 28-17, with 21
KO's.
Gerry Penalosa (now 50-5-2 with 31 KO's) won a 10 round
unanimous decision over Thomas Rojas in a high paced
action fight that was toe to toe action for the full 10
rounds. Penalosa overcame a cut on his left eye in round
2 to win wider scores than the fight had looked: 97-93,
98-92, 98-93. Rojas falls to 22-9 with 14 KO's.

Pacman Primed To Get
Gobbled By Larios
By William Trillo |
|
|
The
premise of the 1980’s arcade game is simple, guide the
little Pacman around a maze and munch all the little
white dots along the way and avoid getting stopped by
the ghosts, who can bring a quick end to the fun. Only
when Pacman has eaten a power pill or a piece of fruit
can he attack and defeat the ghost.
Tonight Manny Pacquiao is coming through an incredible
maze like run since defeating Erik Morales in January of
this year, that included unexplained visits to the
hospital, promotional tours & endorsements of products
that now include some kind of natural sleep aid, hops
back and forth from California to The Philippines that
seem too numerous for his own good, fights with his
management team, and constant overseeing by his
Trainer/Babysitter Freddie Roach. All of which lead me
to believe that Manny is not truly physically & mentally
prepared for his task at hand tonight. Throw in reports
of an unusually grim Pacquiao at the weigh-in for
tonight’s battle and all doesn’t seem to be lining up
properly for an easy victory tonight, as many of Pacquiao’s
people & honks have predicted.
On
the other side, Oscar Larios seems very prepared to put
on his best killer ghostlike performance tonight and he
seems set and determined on stopping Pacman’s run
through the twist filled maze, not allowing him to go on
to stage 2 of the game, that being Erik Morales.
Training in Japan for over a month to get his body
clock acclimated to the time change, not wanting to fall
victim to jetlag a la Jeff Lacy, Larios will be fully
rested, fresh and ready to go. Word is his sparring in
Japan has been furious and he is demolishing sparring
partners with no problems whatsoever. Add in his easy
time at the scales at the official weigh-in yesterday
and it looks like Larios may be ready to pull off a
major upset tonight.
In
fact, I am going to go ahead and predict it. There will
be no power pills or pieces of fruit for the Pacman to
eat, and with nowhere to reach for super strength, Oscar
Larios will gobble up Manny Pacquiao by TKO in round 9.
Anyone
familiar with any of my other "sure fire locks" will be
seen running down to their nearest casino dumping all
their cash on Manny early, can't really say that I blame
them, but it's a gut feeling I have and I had to let it
be known.
Do with the information as you will.

The dream lives on for Carlos Bojorquez.
The former junior middleweight contender had spoke of
retirement if he couldn't defeat Detroit's Marlon Thomas
Thursday night at the in Highland. But Bojorquez showed he
still has the power to give any junior middleweight a scare,
flattening Thomas with a right hand for a second round knockout
victory.
After winning the first round with his
superior quickness, Thomas unwisely elected to trade punches
with the rugged Mira Loma resident in the second. Bojorquez
tagged Thomas with a right, missed a left, and then finished off
the Motown visitor with another right to the back of the head as
Thomas was bent at the waist trying to evade the incoming blows.

Paez Jr. Off Tonight's Card |
|
Jorge Paez Jr. will not be able to fight July 1
in Manistee, Mich., because he has been denied entry into the
United States by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security it
was announced today.
The 18-year-old Paez Jr. attempted several times to gain
admittance into the U.S. Thursday and Friday, but access was not
granted, and it doesn’t appear as though that access will be
forthcoming in time for him to participate in the bout.
“We are sick about this,” said Scott Woodworth, vice president
of Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “Everyone involved with this bout
and card knows how long and hard we all worked to make this
fight. Now, a case of mistaken identity prevents Paez Jr. from
entering the United States in time to fight Saturday.
“But,” said Woodworth, “far be it for Sycuan Ringside Promotions
to suggest that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is not
doing its job. It is unfortunate for all concerned, especially
Jorge Jr., but, I am certain that for every mistake made,
countless persons are prevented from entering, and our country
is the safer for it.”
Paez Jr. had been scheduled to meet Armand Horn in a six-round
lightweight bout.
The undefeated lightweight sensation (9-0, seven KOs) from
Mexicali, Mexico, is the son of “The Clown Prince of Boxing” and
former featherweight world champion, Jorge Paez. The younger
Paez, who goes by “El Maromerito,’’ had an amateur record of
77-3, including an exhibition win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.,
before turning pro Feb. 4, 2005.

Sam
Peter –
“I’m The Only Real Heavyweight Contender” |
|
|
New York, June 30—There are contenders and pretenders, but
knockout artist Sam Peter, is ranked in the top five by
all major organizations, and is also universally
recognized as the top contender. Now, Peter is on a
mission.
“Sam clearly illustrated that he belongs with the
heavyweight elite in his match against Wladimir
Klitschko last year,” said his promoter Dino Duva.
“Considering the many lethargic, non-exciting televised
matches recently featuring so-called champions and
contenders, Sam is the best heavyweight out there to put
on a great show because of his electrifying punching
power.”
But now, the hard-punching powerhouse has his sites set
only on meaningful matches that will ultimately unify
the world heavyweight championship.
“Our mission is to have Sam fight only meaningful
fights, beginning with his next bout, that put him in a
position where every fight he has is the next step
toward unifying the heavyweight title,” said Duva. “By
2007, the unification mission will be done and we will
not be stopped.”

Mosley & Vargas Trainer Teleconference |
|
Jack Mosley:
Shane is going to win the fight. There is no question
about it. I am not thinking about what people are going to
say what they say and I know what I’ve got in Shane. Like
I said, he is a five-time world champion in three different
weight classes and I was a part of that – Shane and I did that
together. I don’t care what they think. I already
know what I did, I started Shane from scratch. How many
trainers can say they started a fighter from scratch and gotten
those accomplishments? Not too many, I say. There
are some, but not too many. So I don’t care what they say.
I already know what I did. And I don’t need anybody to
tell me. And I don’t need any praise from anyone either.
I already know what I did – in my own head.
Danny Smith:
There are some minor adjustments that have been made. It
is hard to say how the outcome – it started in the very first
round. It is hard to say how it would have ended if that
wasn’t the case. So we don’t make a lot of changes.
