The Welters...
By Luis "The Beast" Cadiz
The New Year is upon us, literally only a few days away. 2007
was the year that boxing regained the luster it once had, by
making matches the boxing public wanted to see. Mixed Martial
Arts, M.M.A. for short, was being touted as the replacement for
boxing, the supposed ailing sport that was getting long in the
tooth and had a problem finding a younger audience and keeping
the faithful fans it already has. Well M.M.A. can stay put
because boxing has regained its rightful throne. One of the
hottest divisions this year was the welterweights with
Mayweather Jr. vs. Hatton, Cotto vs. Judah and Mosley, Paul
Williams vs. Margarito and Kermit Cintron vs. Walter Matthysse.
2008 can be better than the year that is about to pass,
especially in the welterweights, but a series of events have to
occur in order for the welters to dominate the boxing scene. Click Here For Full

UFC 79: Hughes Rushed to End of the Road,
Chuck Wanderleis Silva
By Dennis Bernstein, MBA - Chairman/CEO SCORE!
Media Ventures
Las Vegas – As it was last December with the Tito Ortiz-Chuck
Liddell match, the Ultimate Fighting Championship closed 2007
with a rush. Or more importantly, a Rush with a capital R as in
the nickname of Georges St. Pierre, the man that not so quietly
was put in position by UFC’s management team to lead the
franchise with some slick behind the scenes wrangling. St.
Pierre, the former welterweight champion until upset by current
champ Matt Serra was out of the championship mix until given an
opportunity to re-ascend when Serra came up with a herniated
disk in his back at Thanksgiving. Though not approached by UFC
management to step in for Serra initially, the suggestion that
Georges was ready for the match was broached by St. Pierre’s
management and other opponents were quickly cast aside as the
replacement opponent for another former champ, Matt Hughes. Click Here For Full

Huck Determined To Bounce Back After First Loss
Marco "Captain" Huck has vowed to train "even
harder than before" after suffering the first loss of his career
on Saturday night. The 23-year-old power puncher failed to win
the IBF cruiserweight title from Steve Cunningham, who clinched
a 12th-round TKO victory. The American champion landed a series
of hard punches in the final two minutes of the fight which
promoted coach Ulli Wegner to throw the towel with 64 seconds to
go. "I was too tense," the disappointed challenger said
afterwards. "I had difficulties getting off punches. Cunningham
was the better fighter tonight and deserved to win." Click

Guinn Loses Again, Why Is He Still Being Televised?
Why Anyone
Would Call This An "Upset" Is Beyond Me
By Bret "The Threat" Newton
Dominick Guinn (now 28-6, 19 KO's) lost another, lethargic,
lazy, and complete shutout fight in another ESPN main event.
This time to journeyman and short noticed Robert Hawkins, who
has lost nearly half the fights he's won, let alone knocked out
in 5 in his previous fight. Not only did he lose the fight
convincingly, one judge didn't find a single round to give
Guinn, while another judge found only one. Several questions
ponder in one's mind through the surroundings of this fight and
it's final result. My first question of the week was: "Why is
Guinn even still being televised, let alone in another main
event?". Guinn is a guy who's lackadaisical performances made
you rather want to watch a John Ruiz fight. Ruiz may be awkward,
but at least he tries in the majority of his fights. Guinn's 6
losses came to Monte Barrett, Surgei Liakhovich, James Toney,
Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers and now Robert Hawkins. Each of
his losses came by decision, with a lackluster performance by
Guinn who always promised much more from himself.
Just going over some of the scores in all his loses, why would
anyone still promote him, let alone want to offer him as a main
event on their network? Click Here

End Of The Year Charitable Donations:
Consider The Retired Boxers Foundation
By Jacquie Richardson, Executive
Director, Retired Boxers Foundation, Inc.
As we approach the end of the year, we also approach the last
opportunity to make a charitable donation that the IRS would
recognize as a legitimate tax deduction as well. As the
Executive Director ofthe Retired Boxers Foundation, which was
founded by Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos in 1998, I often wonder
if people realize that the Retired Boxers Foundation is an
official IRS charitable organization(501(c)3 nonprofit
organization) and that their donation to the RBF is 100% tax
deductible. The mission of the Retired Boxers Foundation is to
assist retired professional boxers in the transition from their
glorious days in the ring, to a dignified retirement. Click Here

April Showers (Hopkins vs. Calzaghe) &
May Flowers (Mayweather vs. Oscar 2)

Las Vegas may be in store for a downpour if Joe Calzaghe brings
his U.K. weather with him in April 2008 to face Bernard Hopkins
in the inevitable showdown, or that's what a little bird told me

The following month of May could be filled with flowers of
forgiveness as it appears The Golden Boy and The Pretty Boy will
bury the hatchet and do it one more time, this time in the
backyard of Oscar at the legendary Chavez Ravine, better known
to non Los Angelinos as Dodger Stadium. De La Hoya has promised
one more fight in front of his hometown fans and it looks like
the rematch with Mayweather may be it.

Merry Christmas From Kostya Tszyu
Dear Tszyu Crew,
This year was one of my busiest, since I can't even remember.
Not in terms of boxing myself, but in terms of general travel
and all the different things I have been doing. I calculated the
amount of time I just spent sitting on a plane in 2007 and it
was more than 500 hours!
I have promised myself to do less next year and spend more time
at home with my own family. I am looking at finding quality time
for my travel. I want more quality time away and my trips will

The Best Of 2007
By Nat Gottlieb Courtesy of HBO.com
It was a great year for boxing, and picking the best-of-the-best
was delightfully difficult. The year was packed with excitement
from start to brilliant finish. Here is one opinion on the cream
of this year's bumper crop.
FIGHT OF THE YEAR
Taylor-Pavlik
There were several terrific fights, but for sheer drama and
significance, none quite matched the classic showdown in
September between reigning middleweight champion Jermain Taylor
and unbeaten knockout artist Kelly Pavlik. It was a
highly-anticipated fight with several subplots, and lived up to
its billing. Click Here

After his dismantling of Shamone
Alvarez, Joshua Clottey spoke about the fight and what he would
like to do next in the always hot Welterweight division.
Clottey Shows Alvarez & Fans What The Truth Really Is
Written By Oliver Smith
Joshua Clottey took his record to 33-2 with a victory via
unanimous decision against the too “slick” to fight enough to
beat anyone significant south paw Shamone "The Truth" Alvarez
whose deceiving record now stands at 19-1.
Clottey was never really troubled in this fight as Alvarez
lacked any fire power or conviction in his punches. Clottey
dominated from start to finish, picking his moments and smoothly
working the ring. Click Here

Vazquez-Marquez II fight of the year!
The votes are in and the experts agree. The epic
rematch between Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez and Rafael Marquez
which happened in August has been named “fight of the year” by
The Ring Magazine, Yahoo Sports, El Esto newspaper and the World
Boxing Council as well as by various online boxing outlets. The
action packed third round was also named “round of the year”.
The World Boxing Hall of Fame bestowed Vazquez and Marquez with
the same honor in October. “I’m thrilled by all the attention.
If a third fight between Rafael and I happens I promise everyone
the same type of intense action,” stated Vazquez who recently
shot a pictorial for a feature on Sports Illustrated en Espanol.
“I want to thank all the fans for their support and wish them a
Merry Christmas and a happy 2008.”
Wegner, Abraham honored - again
Ulli Wegner and IBF middleweight champion King
Arthur Abraham received an early Christmas gift this week. They
both defended their titles as German coach and fighter of the
year. The successful duo is no stranger to success inside and
outside the ring. Unbeaten in 25 fights (20 KOs), Abraham won
the prestigious German award for a second straight year, while
Wegner made it five first-place finishes in a row. Click Here For

village, which in former times served as a well-known training
base for East German star athletes, is located 20 miles east of
Berlin. "There is nothing going on here so all I could do was
practice," Huck said. "I can´t wait to get out and finally take
on Cunningham. He has been on my mind all the time." Click Here For
