Actors such as Mark Wahlberg and Mickey Rourke also hit the carpet walk who are also big admirers of the two fighters. Trainers Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr. both predicted knockouts, while Pacquiao and Hatton promised to give their best on fight night.

Prince Overcomes Technical Issues At Nokia Theatre
Chambers & Peter Can't Overcome Weighty Issues

By William Trillo
While rocker Prince found a way to get through the technical snafu's at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre on Saturday night the same could not be said for the main event on Friday night in the same venue as both Eddie Chambers and Sam Peter lumbered behind excess girth that made their battle darn near unwatchable, and no I am not talking about the poor sight lines in that venue, I already touched on that, and there is really no reason to beat a dead horse....much. :)

Looking to put on another great show in front of his adopted home of Montreal, Super Middleweight Librado Andrade makes final preparations as he ready for his battle with Vitali Tsypko this Saturday night at The Bell Center. The winner will become the number one mandatory challenger for IBF Champ Lucien Bute who just recently defended his title in Montreal. With it's controversial outcome, a Bute vs. Andrade rematch looms but not before Librado can get past the tough Tsypko. The fight will be televised on Showtime this Saturday night along with the Tim Bradley vs. Kendall Holt 140 pound unifier. It's a can't miss card that promises to be action packed.

  “The Standing Eight Count”-
Ringside For ESPN 2 Friday Night Fights

By Dave Wilcox
The Nokia Theater in Los Angeles played host to Goossen-Tutor Promotions as the dapper Joe Tessitore and the not so dapper Teddy Atlas called the action for Friday Night Fights. This would be a fight card hosted by a venue normally reserved for stage shows and concerts. This was not your normal Boxing atmosphere. If you picture going to a play, that’s what we had here. The ring sat on the stage and the entire crowd was on one side, as if they were at a movie. Us media scrubs sat on the stage.   Defending Manny & The Meaning Of Loyalty
By Marv Dumon - examiner.com
And so all observers have reached an eventuality where there were able to witness a business mistake being made. It was inevitable. A few were made in the past. More are coming.

Intentional or not - redundantly stating in order to drive the fact (not an opinion) - that more mistakes are coming. In case you are asking why that to be the case . . .

. . . because Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao is a human being.

Dirrell Puts On Another Effortless Snoozer
This Time Only For 6 Rounds Against Tomato Can Findley

Andre Dirrell (now 18-0, 13 KO's) is just one of those fighters who fights up to, or down to, the level of his opponents. As shown in the past against Curtis Stevens where the two shadow boxed for 10 of the most boring rounds in boxing history, then against Victor Oganov where the two fought in a war. What ever Dirrell's opponents bring determines how much he decides to give. Tonight was against completely overmatched Derrick Findley who's last fight was against a guy who had only 1 win and 18 losses. How is that a fight that puts you in line to fight Andre Dirrell?

In round 1, Dirrell landed a huge left uppercut that snapped Findley's head back and staggered him to the ropes. Dirrell then teed off on Findley with consecutive uppercuts to the body and head, all landing as Findley just held his guard up with his back against the ropes to make it out of the round. It didn't look like this was going to go on much longer, or so we thought.

For the next 5 rounds, Dirrell just jabbed at the much smaller Findley. That's it. A few right hands were mixed in, but that's basically it. Findley did nothing but plod forward with his guard up, offering nothing whatsoever but target practice. What's bothersome is that Dirrell could finish Findley at any given moment, during any round, but chooses not to and puts the audience to sleep. Findley is no danger to Dirrell, and Dirrell just runs around the ring popping out jabs, even backing all the way up to the ropes to let Findley in, as the two would end in a clinch. Dirrell really needs to pick up the pace.

At the end of the 6th round Findley's corner decided to waive the fight off and save us from our misery. Findley falls to 13-3 with 8 KO's.

  Yorgey Obliterates Hearns In 9
Harry Yorgey (now 22-0-1, with 10 KO's) had his way with untested Ronald Hearns. Son of legend Thomas Hearns, Ronald was not brought up in the correct manner in order to be a viable opponent for someone who actually knew how to box. You just can't prepare these kids who carry their fathers name with them into the ring by fighting bum after bum after bum.

The fight started quick as both men exchanged in the center of the ring. In round 3, Hearns was staggered early, but Yorgey let him off the hook and kept back the remainder of the round.

In round 4, a big right hand buckled Hearns again, this time Yorgey followed up with a combination and down went Hearns for the first time in his career. Yorgey again kept back the remainder of the round which cost him as a left hand by Hearns that appeared blocked, dropped Yorgey in the same round. Yorgey complained of their feet tangling as result of the knockdown and showed no ill effects from the punch.

In round 5, a huge right hand on the chin sent Hearns straight down like a wooden board early in the round. It didn't look like Hearns would make it, but he did as Yorgey once again failed to put on any finishing touches and let Hearns make it out of the round.

In round 7, Hearns began to take a beating. Yorgey was landing right hands at will, stopping Hearns in his tracks and staggering him across the ring, rope to rope.

In round 8, Yorgey again lets Hearns off the hook by taking a whole round off.

In round 9, Hearns in retreat, unwilling to get into any exchanges nearly made it another round, but in the final seconds, a huge left hook buckled Hearns as he staggered backwards and as the bell sounded, another big right hand landed flush on the chin and Hearns was on the canvas a third time. Hearns was out and the fight should have been waived off right then and there, but referee Steve Smoger gave one of his famous long counts and by the time you could have reached 20, Smoger counted "10" and Hearns showed no desire to continue.

Final time was 2:59 of the 9th. Hearns takes his first loss, but also his first real opponent and should rethink his career at 21-1 with 17 KO's.

Fights At Nokia More Than Just A Bad Idea
By William Trillo
The next time a designed theatre will become a suitable venue for a professional boxing card will be the first time a designed theatre becomes a suitable venue for a professional boxing card. On Friday night a fight card was held in Downtown L.A. at the beautiful Nokia Theatre. In theory it sounded like a pretty nifty idea but when the curtain was raised the night became a huge bust. (And no I am not talking about the ring card girls who needed a lot more padding in those push up wonder bras).

Slowly I digress. Click Here For Full Report

Friday night was fight night at the Quiet Canon in Montebello, CA where jr. welterweight prospect Mookie Pendarvis stepped up in class to test his mettle against gate keeper Steve Quinonez. Pendarvis v. Quinonez headlined an action packed fight card presented by All-Star Boxing.

Cleotis “Mookie” Pendarvis stopped veteran Steve Quinonez (31-14-1) at 2:07 of the first to win their jr. welterweight contest in dramatic fashion. When Quinonez, a former title challenger, lost his balance and nearly fell through the ropes Pendarvis greeted his return to the ring with a chopping left hand. Quinonez never saw the punch and crumbled to the floor. Quinonez struggled to beat the count but did and when the fight resumed Pendarvis jumped on him. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. was forced to step between the fighters and call a halt to the bout. With the victory Pendarvis (10-1-1) won the CA State Jr. Welterweight championship.

Carlos Hernandez, Vicente Escobedo, Jesse James Leija & Ignacio Beristain Teleconference Transcript
Carlos Hernandez:  Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity with a young rising star like Vicente Escobedo, who we know - we all know is the future of boxing. But we have to work to win. This guy is a good, hungry young fighter, but what I have in my corner is experience. And that's what we're going to bring to the table.

Jesse James Leija:   I'm excited about this. I'm so excited for Carlos Hernandez getting a second opportunity to get back to the world title. And I know Vicente Escobedo, who's a young, young, energized fighter. But, I see it that he's going to be heavily tested in this fight. I almost see it as when I fought Juan Lazcano, when I fought Hector Camacho, Jr., when I fought Francisco Bojado where I think these guys are coming in too quick, too soon, to fight a veteran fighter as in Carlos. And, I know he has a great trainer and I just think that right now it's going to be experience that's going to prevail over Vicente Escobedo. Peter & Chambers Belly Up To Scale

By William Trillo
At 265 pounds Sam Peter is over 11 pounds heavier than he has ever been when he steps in the ring tonight and at 223 pounds Eddie Chambers has only tipped the scales by more than that one time. Excuse me if I get the impression that neither one of these guys took the fight very seriously. You got to love a weigh in picture where both fighters still got their shirts on. They say the camera adds 10 pounds so if the fighters look bigger than that on ESPN tonight don't come crying to me.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada
Plans To Upset No. 1 Rated Alexander Povetkin

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada held an open media workout today at his ”Big Six Academy” in Providence before he departs Sunday for Germany to fight Alexander Povetkin, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and the IBF’s No. 1 contender, April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Estrada (15-1, 3 KOs) and Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs) nearly fought several times as amateurs but it never materialized, due to their contrasting schedules, until now as professionals. Povetkin, who has a mandated title shot this fall against IBF heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, signed to fight Estrada because, according to reports from his camp, he wants a test not a tune-up.   Pacquiao & Roach Named BWAA's Best
Boxing’s No. 1 pound for fighter MANNY PACQUIAO and No. 1 pound 4 pound trainer WORLD-FAMOUS FREDDIE ROACH, were named 2008 Fighter of the Year and Trainer of the Year, respectively, by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Pacquiao and Roach, boxing’s dynamic duo, were honored for a year that can only be described as Henry Armstronesque. The Pinoy powerhouse captured the WBC super featherweight title by defeating Juan Manual Marquez and the WBC lightweight title by knocking out defending champion David Diaz. Pacquiao’s stoppage of Oscar De La Hoya, fought at the welterweight limit was the historic exclamation to a great year. Armstrong, the great Hall of Famer, is best known for being the only man in boxing history to hold three world titles simultaneously, a feat he accomplished 71 years ago when he won world titles at featherweight, welterweight and lightweight (in that order) during a nine-month span between November 1937 and August 1938.   Valero Works Out Hard
Photo: Bret "The Threat" Newton

24-0 with 24 KO's Edwin Valero held an open workout today in Los Angeles where he showed off his hard hitting ability. Valero is preparing for next Saturday's "Lightweight Lightning", April 4th PPV bout with Antonio Pitalua (46-3, 40 KO's). Training with Robert Alcazar, Valero looked ripped and strong as he shadowboxed, hit the mitts, then the bag, before jumping rope. Alcazar started with, "Me Gusta", which quickly changed to, "No me gusta", as the rounds went on, having the mitts hit over and over by Valero's quick power bombs which hurt everyone's hands that were just watching.

Don King Files Protest On Behalf Of Marco A. Barrera
Promoter Claims Amir Khan Won a ‘Tainted Victory’
Until a Rematch Can Be Held;

Promoter Don King has filed a protest with the British Boxing Board of Control, World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association on behalf of Marco Antonio Barrera claiming his accidental clash of heads with Amir Khan during the first round of their match should have resulted in the fight being ruled no contest.

The five-time world champion Barrera and rising 22-year-old British star Khan—who had been knocked out in 54 seconds six months earlier and badly needed a win—had barely begun to fight in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at M.E.N Arena on March 14 in Manchester, England, when the two boxers’ heads inadvertently slammed together while trying to land punches.   Wayne McCullough – Old Man Or Big Threat?
I read Brian Peters’ response to my challenge of Bernard Dunne that he released today. I was a little taken aback that Brian would write a disrespectful press release but I’m not really surprised.

Brian and I have been friends for many years. He was even a guest at my wedding back in 1993. Today he suggested that I need to get a “few good wins ... before (a fight with Bernard) would be a viable fight” but if my fights keep falling through, how can I do get those wins? Unbeaten in 25 fights with 18 knockouts, and ranked in the top five by three of the four major world sanctioning bodies, Maywood, California’s Urbano Antillon has more than earned his right to a major fight on premium cable television or for a world championship, yet the top names at 135 pounds continue to avoid him at every opportunity.

And the soft-spoken Antillon has had enough. Click Here For More

Top 10 Boxers Of The Last 20 Years
By Marv Dumon - examiner.com
Given boxing's recent resurgence, we find it prudent to explore pound for pound rankings for the past 20 years. This era will likely find about 20 or more prize fighters who have, or eventually will be, inducted into the hall of fame. Interestingly, out of the top 10 boxers that we have on this list, 5 are currently (or potentially) active as of the writing of this article.

How do we define boxing greatness? In my view, there are 4 criteria that stand out that differentiates a fighter from a crowd full of commendable talent.

  Open Letter To Bernard Dunne
From Wayne McCullough

Bernard,

Congratulations on your great win at the weekend – you deserve it. You’ve worked hard to get where you are today. Being able to come back from the 5th round to pull out the win, while being so far behind on the cards, is an accomplishment in itself.

Doesn’t it feel good to be a World Champion?!? I’m really delighted for you. And being able to fight for the belt in front of your hometown fans is fantastic too.

But let’s get down to business! Click Here For More

Diaz To Battle Reyes On April 4th "Lightweight Lightning" Card After Casamayor Withdraws Injured
Former World Champion Julio Diaz will now square off against Oxnard, California's Rolando Reyes, who agreed to fight Diaz on the April 4th "Lightweight Lightning" card at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas after Joel Casamayor was forced to withdraw from the bout last week due to an acute lumbar spine sprain that will keep him out of action for six weeks.

Rolando "Pochito" Reyes (30-4-2, 19 KOs) is one of the rising contenders in the lightweight division and a stiff test for Diaz. Winner of nine of his last ten bouts, including four in a row, the 30-year old Reyes holds TKO wins over former world champs Stevie Johnston and John Brown, and he plans on adding another big name to his resume on April 4th.
