Green Slams Kessler:
"Mikkel will not be worth a nickel" |
|
|
Photo: Team Sauerland
Allan Green (31-1, 21 KOs) continued his
war of words with Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KOs) today at
the final press conference in Copenhagen. Three days
ahead of their WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship
(Silver) clash at Denmark's famous PARKEN Stadium, Green
claimed that the Viking Warrior was a long way past his
prime. “He used to be a joy to watch, a great fighter,
but that was before he fought Calzaghe,” the 32-year-old
American stated. “He has not been the same fighter
since. I don't know if it is mental or physical wear,
but he's just not been on the same level any more.
Mikkel will not be worth a nickel when he will be in the
ring with me. I will break his a** into two halves. I
want him to be at his best on Saturday night, the best
he can possibly be, and for his sake it better be
enough!”

Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm never thought about what it’d be

The Washington, DC based Philadelphian stopped 9 of his first 13
opponents and was named one of the best prospects in the beltway
region. Still, Byarm, who had less than 15 amateur fights, was

fighters such as Tony Thompson, Byarm made notable improvements
with every fight. In his final bout of 2011, the crowd-pleasing
29-year-old stopped veteran Clinton Boldridge in 74 seconds and

Gym in Newark NJ, the kids who make up “the team” can be seen on
a daily basis honing their craft with the dedication and drive

champions on the planet. Their days start at the crack of dawn
where these kids are literally doing road work with the vigor
and passion that it takes to be a champion. We are talking about
8 year olds – 14 year olds that have made the commitment to
focus their energy on something positive, stay off the streets &
in addition to their intense training regimen they are required

battle tested Enrique Ornelas (32-7,21 KO’s). The Golden

as both fighters are big punchers.
Pound4Pound spoke to Ornelas about the fight and his
second shot at a world title belt.
Pound4Pound: When and where were you when you first
find out about the Shumenov fight?
Enrique Ornelas: I was up in Big Bear helping Shane
Mosley when I found out about the fight. It was around
the last week or two of his camp when I became aware of
the Shumenov fight. At first I thought I was going to
fight with along my brother on April 21st but they got a
hold of me and said there was something in the works
that could involve a world title. Of course I said if
there is a world title fight available then let’s do it!
Who can say no to a shot at the title?

It has been reported that Bobby “The Celtic

United States following a trip to Canada. Sources close to Team
Gunn stated that following his bout with James Toney in April,
Gunn flew to Ontario to seek medical attention due to injuries

Team Jones Thrilled About Brook Fight |
|
When IBF #3 rated welterweight and USBA champion
Carson Jones challenged undefeated Kell Brook, he wasn’t sure if
the highly-touted Brit would accept.
Brook, 27-0 (18 KO’s), set his sights on newly-crowned WBA
champion Paulie Malignaggi or the winner of the upcoming Mike
Jones-Randall Bailey IBF championship match, but neither bout
would be immediately available. Although he initially attempted
to leapfrog Jones into a title shot, Brook, IBF #5, ultimately
agreed to face him Saturday, July 7 in an elimination bout at
the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Larouche: "Lucian Bute Will Have To Work
Harder Than Froch To Win In Nottingham" |
|
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The situation is very clear for Stephan Larouche, the
trainer of the IBF supper middleweight champion of the world,
Lucian Bute: his fighter will need to clearly win the rounds May
26th in the ring of the Nottingham Arena, where he will make the
10th defense on his belt, the most prestigious one. That night,
Bute (30-0-0) will fight the former WBC super middleweight
champion of the world, and the finalist of the Showtime "Super
Six" tournament, the British Carl Froch (28-2-0).
"Were are realistic," said Larouche. "We all know that Lucian
will have to work harder than Froch to get a score of 10-9 in
each round over there. In Nottingham, the Froch fans are
fanatics, then, they can influence the judges judgement in every
close round. Lucian knows it."

The Strange Case Of Lamont “PED”erson |
|
By William Trillo
Photo-Chop: Bret "The Threat" Newton
Like everyone else I was somewhat
surprised by the news of Light Welterweight title holder
Lamont Peterson being involved in a Performance
Enhancing Drug debacle that would in a matter of days
destroy the much anticipated title rematch against Amir
Khan. The fight that was set to take place in the
gambling city of Las Vegas on May 19th crumbled like a
deck of overused cards when the Joker was exposed.
Of all the people that were surprised by the revelation
that Lamont was injecting time-released steroids into
his body a month before the first Khan fight, it was
Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer who was the most upset,
and rightly so. "The lack of transparency from Peterson
not disclosing the positive test is shocking, but what
is further shocking is that VADA did not inform us,"
said Schaefer. In an interview conducted later Schaefer
said of this situation, “stop spinning the bullsh*t.”
I could not agree with the Golden Boy CEO more.

Donovan "Razor" Ruddock Launches Return
To Boxing Glory Saturday Night In Mississauga |

In the late 80’s and early 90’s he was the most
feared heavyweight on the planet.

Now, after carving a path of destruction through the last great
heavyweight era, and going nineteen rounds against the most
ferocious heavyweight of all time in "Iron" Mike Tyson, Donovan
"Razor" Ruddock is ready to reclaim the Canadian Heavyweight
crown that he never lost in the ring, and ultimately earn the

Less than two weeks before the Lamont Peterson / Amir Khan
rematch, the news came out that Peterson had tested positive for
a banned substance back in March. The random test was conducted

On Tuesday morning Peterson’s representatives admitted that he
did have a positive test for synthetic testosterone in March. In
fact, Lamont himself said that he had taken testosterone pellets
before his last fight with Amir back in December. Hmm, that
would be twice.

Billy's Boxing Blog
Ring King's Bling & Sting |
|
By William Trillo
For those of you who came here to my Monday blog looking for
some angst directed at this weekends show in Las Vegas...well
you may be somewhat disappointed. In fact I have more love for
the show this weekend than anything.
As PPV events go this one was as close to being worth the price
of admission than any other PPV cards we have seen in recent
times. That's not opinion, that's fact.
Super Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto was well prepared for
Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday night and he gave the fans
every ounce of himself as he bloodied but failed to defeat
Mayweather. Cotto looked strong and his gameplan was on target.
The problem is he was taking on one of the most gifted fighters
in this era and although many would have liked to have seen get
Floyd served up a plate of defeat before he was carted off to
serve a little jail time, it was not meant to be. Say what you
will about Floyd, the man can fight.

"Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto"
Post Fight Quotes |
|
Floyd Mayweather; Eight-Time and Five-Division
World Champion
"Tonight we gave the fans what they wanted to see. We matched
the best with the best. Cotto was a very tough competitor and he
won some rounds. He pushed me to the limits and this is what
it's all about.
"Miguel Cotto fought his ass off tonight and I want to
congratulate him and his team.
"You've seen me in flashy cars, but I want you to know that I do
give back to the community. This is what it's all about. It's
not about making a lot of money. It's about giving back.

Demetrius Andrade Destroys Cisneros In One Round |
|
2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade
continued his march towards a world title shot, knocking out
Rudy Cisneros at the end of the first round in tonight's "ESPN
Boxing: FNF Special Edition," presented by Corona Extra, at
Mohegan Sun Arena.
Andrade (17-0, 11 KOs), a fast-rising junior middleweight from
Providence, is rated No. 6 in the World Boxing Organization
("WBO") and No. 7 in the International Boxing Federation
("IBF"). The gifted, young southpaw established his
lightning-quick jab early, followed with some solid body
punching, and closed the show with a perfect right, left
combination that dropped Cisneros (12-4, 11 KOs) with three
seconds left in the opening round. Chisneros, a Contender,
Season Two participant, was taken out of the ring on a stretcher
because he was dizzy. He reportedly was healthy in the locker
room and taken to Backus Hospital for precautionary reasons
only.

Mayweather vs. Cotto Give Boxing
Fans Their Money's Worth |
|
By William Trillo
Photos: Tom Hogan - HoganPhotos/Golden Boy
WBA Super Middleweight Champ Miguel Cotto
(37-3, 30 KO's) had his work cut out for him and he did
everything he could to give Floyd Mayweather Jr.
(43-0,26 KO's) possibly the toughest fight of his
career. No one will deny Floyd was pushed to the limit
but in the end his superior skill was enough to make him
the new Super Welterweight Champ with unanimous decision
scores of 117-111,117-111 and 118-110. Through all the
antics we have seen from Mayweather in the past, in this
fight he was a true professional and whether it's the
impending jail sentence ahead of him or the fact that
this fight was harder than expected, Mayweather appeared
calm after the fight and came through things very well
on camera.

Canelo Defeats A Determined But Outgunned Mosley |
|
By William Trillo @ Ringside
Photo: Tom Hogan - HoganPhotos/Golden Boy
The crowd was standing at the end of the fight cheering for
Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO's) who also was on his feet after 12
grueling rounds of battle with WBC Super Welterweight Champion
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 20 KO's). No, Shane was not going
to get the victory on this night against the young and strong
Mexican but he made a very good account of himself by taking
everything Alvarez threw...and he threw plenty. Canelo was
clearly the stronger and more aggressive fighter all night and
even though he was bloodied by a headbutt Alvarez never relented
from the task at hand. A swollen Mosley admitted it looks like
this could be the end but wasn't ready to make it official. The
writing is clearly on the wall though and I am sure many will
hope Mosley hangs up his gloves. Meanwhile the road is paved
with gold for Alvarez after taking an impressive victory with
scores of 119-109 twice and 118-110.

Vargas Outworks Forbes |

By William Trillo @ Ringside
Photo: Tom Hogan - Hogan Photos/ Golden Boy
Welterweights Jessie Vargas (19-0, 9KO's) and Stevie Forbes
(35-11, 11 KO's) met in a scheduled 10 round affair that was a
good night of learning for Vargas as the tough Forbes who took
the night on short notice gave Vargas some good honest work.
That being said Vargas pitched a darn near shutout winning by
scores of 100-90, 97-93 and 98-92 over 10 rounds.

Quintana Knocks Out Latimore In 6 |
|
Carlos Quintana (now 29-3, 23 KO's) stopped
Deandre Latimore in round 6 after hammering him against the
ropes and scoring a knockdown. Latimore appeared to have the
edge in the first two rounds, using more movement and throwing
more punches. Quintana started throwing more in the 3rd and
continue his momentum over the next 2 rounds, hurting Latimore
in the 5th. In round 6, Quinatan staggered Latimore into the
corner with a straight left. Quintana let his hands go on a
nearly defenseless Latimore who began to stagger to the next
corner. Another left hand from Quintana sent Latimore down who
rose to his feet on the count of "9", but was waived off and not
seem fit to continue. Latimore falls to 23-4, with 17 KO's.

Ponce Pounds Lazcano Over 10 |
|
By William Trillo
Photos: Marlene Marquez
Super featherweight Daniel Ponce De Leon
(43-4,35 KO's) put a ten round pounding on tough Eduardo
Lazcano (24-3,11 KO's) to take a unanimous decision on
all cards. Ponce came out aggressive from the start and
with but just a brief break he threw enough leather off
Lazcano's head to make even the most grizzled boxing fan
cringe. With the 100-90 scores across the board Ponce
grabbed the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) super
featherweight title.

Steve Forbes: "When One Door Closes,
Sometimes Bigger Doors Open" |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
It has been said that one mans’ misfortune is another's
opportunity. That is exactly what happened with Steve Forbes –
times two. Back on April 12 Steve had a fight scheduled with
Emanuel Augustus, but when Augustus did not pass the physical
the fight was scrapped. Disappointed but not discouraged, Forbes
kept training. That was the beginning of the snowball.
“I stayed in the gym,” he told me. “I went back to the gym the
next day. I was supposed to start sparring a week later. Golden
Boy had been seeing me in the gym and I’d done some stuff with
Linares and Senchenko in the past. They said they were sorry
about my fight being cancelled, and asked if I wanted to go out
to Las Vegas and spar with “Canelo”. I said that I would. I was
already in shape.”

Bernard Hopkins & Seth Mitchell Look To The
Future After Saturday Night Bouts In Atlantic City |
|
Though they left Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City
Saturday night with different results, both future Hall of Famer
Bernard Hopkins and heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell made
statements that their careers are going strong and continuing
after delivering compelling performances to a packed house in
New Jersey and to homes across the country on HBO World
Championship Boxing®.
In the main event, "The Executioner" may have come up on the
short end of a 12-round majority decision to Chad Dawson, but
without question, Hopkins' performance in the closely-contested
bout showed that even at 47, there is plenty of fight left in
the fighting pride of Philadelphia.

Billy's Boxing Blog
Full Of Baloney |
|
|
By William Trillo
According to wiki.answers.com, When one
is "full of baloney (bologna)" it means the
information they offer is nonsense, not trustworthy,
foolishness. With that definition in mind I want to
ad yet another feature to my weekly blog postings.
Many of you are aware of my "Trillo Stink-o-Meter"
specials that run whenever something about the business
of boxing smells a tad rotten. I also occasionally run
my "Go To The Window & Shout, I Am As Mad As Hell"
articles that are spurned when enough is clearly enough.
Well boxing fan's, starting today I will also be running
a feature I call, "Billy Baloney's Delicatessen".
You can look for this feature to rear it's ugly head
whenever ridiculous press releases are sent out touting
the accomplishments of some fighter who is far from the
star the press release would like you to believe. You
also may see the "deli" pop up when fighter themselves
make some bogus statement about their accomplishments
past, present and future.
So without further ado, we shall begin.

Malignaggi Halts Senchenko In 9
To Win WBA Welterweight Title |

"The Magic Man" is back on top. Using pinpoint
accurate punches and a punishing attack from start to finish,
Brooklyn's Paulie Malignaggi stopped previously unbeaten
Vyacheslav Senchenko in the ninth round on Sunday to win the WBA
world welterweight championship.
Fighting at the Donbass Arena in Senchenko's hometown of
Donetsk, Ukraine, Malignaggi took away the home crowd advantage
almost immediately, dominating the bout until referee Steve
Smoger deemed Senchenko unable to continue due to a grotesquely
swollen left eye.

Dawson Earns Majority Decision Over Hopkins
In Another Ugly & Less Than Thrilling Affair |
|
Chad Dawson (now 31-1-2NC, 17 KO's) won the Ring
Magazine Light Heavyweight Title over Bernard Hopkins in a
rematch that was just as ugly as their first fight. Dawson won
on two wide scores simply because he did just enough more than
Hopkins to win the majority of rounds. Hopkins was slow to start
and did very little throughout the entire fight, though claiming
he won the fight and that the scoring was bad. There could be a
case for the one card that scored the fight a draw, 114-114,
since there were many rounds that were decided on one or two
connecting punches, but the fact remains, neither fighter looked
superior or dominant over the other. Hopkins made Dawson look
bad just as Dawson made Hopkins look bad. Their styles
complimented each other in what made another bad fight. There
were more clinches than exchanges, mostly by Hopkins. Dawson
wanted to fight and Hopkins refused to let him have his way,
using many tricks from his arsenal which included his head.
Dawson would suffer a cut over both eyes, one in round 4 and
another in round 8, from ruled "accidental" headbutts that
Dawson claimed to be "intentional". The cuts did not stop
Dawson's motivation who won on scored of 117-111 on two of the
judges score cards. Hopkins falls to 52-6-2 with 32 KO's. After
the fight Dawson called out Super Middleweight Champion Andre
Ward.

Witherspoon's Lack Of Ring Smarts Costs Him
Big Win Over Mitchell Who Stops Chazz In 3 |
|
Seth Mitchell (now 25-0-1, 19 KO's) came back
from losing a one-sided first round to batter and stop Chazz
Witherspoon in round 3. In round 1, it was clear Witherspoon
wanted very little to do in exchanging in the middle of the
ring. Witherspoon kept his long jab out while literally running
around the ring looking terrified. The problem is that
Witherspoon had the height, power and speed to beat Mitchell
within that first round, but he lacked stamina, and more
importantly, ring smarts. Witherspoon cracked Mitchell with a
big right hand that stopped him in his tracks. Witherspoon
proceeded to throw more right hands that had Mitchell hurt and
staggered. Mitchell held both his hands high, coving the sides
of his head from further oncoming right hands and hooks.
Witherspoon only needed to throw to the body, which was wide
open, or an uppercut to the chin. Witherspoon must have been
caught up in the moment because he would only throw more right
hands, clearly not seeing how open Mitchell was to the uppercut
and to the body. Had one landed, this fight would have been over
in the first round, guaranteed. Mitchell managed to survive the
round and Witherspoon went back to his corner gasping for air,
already.
Credit goes to Mitchell who dug himself out of the whole, coming
back in round 2 to punish Witherspoon to the body (the area
Witherspoon failed to throw to). In round 3, Witherspoon was
barely standing based on his lack of stamina alone. Mitchell
went in for the kill and dropped him with a big right hand.
Witherspoon would beat the count, but Mitchell was all over him
with a barrage of punches against the ropes. referee Randy
Neumann jumped in to call a standing eight count, but waived the
fight off after seeing Witherspoon's glazed-over eyes.
Witherspoon falls to 30-3 with 22 KO's.

Peeks & Valleys Of Malignaggi's Career
Path Lead To Title Opportunity In Ukraine |
|
By Simon Ruvalcaba
With the upcoming trend in boxing we will be seeing in the
coming months of aging former champs in big fights against newer
and more heavily favored current champions or prospects, perhaps
the elements facing Paulie Malignaggi's attempt at a
welterweight crown against Vyacheslav Senchenko make his the
most difficult task? Instinctively wanting no part of going on
the road for the opportunity, Malignaggi quickly reevaluated his
options and accepted the challenge. "We thought we where gonna
fight Robert Guerrero on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard and when
that didn't happen for one reason or another, we went back and
took the fight with Senchenko cause it was either that or sit
around" commented Malignaggi shortly before departing for
training camp in Italy leading up to his fight week arrival in
the champions territory.

Sillakh Knocked Out In 8 After
Winning All Previous 7 vs. Grachev |
|
Light Heavyweight Denis Grachev
(now 12-0-1, 8 KO's) shocked huge prospect Ismayl Sillakh,
coming from behind to win with a dramatic knockout that started
with just one punch. Sillakh was in complete control of the
fright from the start, even scoring a knockdown with a straight
right in round 3. Everything changed when a right from Grachev
stopped and staggered Sillakh into the corner during round 8.
Grachev jumped on Sillakh, who still had his hands up, with
power hooks from both hands. Sillakh began to take clean shots
through his guard, one which began to stagger him to the next
corner. Another right hand landed flush as Sillakh leaned back
which put him down and prompted the referee to immediately jump
in and call the fight off at 2:18. Although Sillakh definitely
was not in good shape, he
should have been given the chance to rise to his
feet. Sillakh drops to 17-1 with 14 KO's.

Rowland Bryant Discusses Stopping Librado Andrade |
|
By William Trillo
No one really gave Light Heavyweight Rowland Bryant (now 16-1,
11 KO's) any chance of defeating the tough whiskered Librado
Andrade (30-5, 23 KO's) this past weekend in El Paso Texas. No
one but Rowland Bryant that is. The little known fighter from
Florida put himself on the radar after his KO victory and we
wanted to talk with him about his moment.
Pound4Pound: You came into El Paso ,Texas this past weekend
and did the improbable. Congratulations on your victory. Now
that you have had a few days to let this sink in how are you
feeling?
Rowland Bryant: I feel great. It’s hard to think I got a
fight at that level and it went that way. My coach and I keep
talking about it and hopefully we get more.

Hopkins vs. Dawson II Roundtable Quotes |
|
Bernard Hopkins: "I'm a throw back. I live
in a time where it is so microwavable that there is no time to
cook, season, chop or marinate any more. I'm the last of a dying
[expletive] breed.
"They were calling me old when I beat Trinidad 11 years ago.
"Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will always
motivate me."
Chad Dawson: "It all depends on how Bernard comes in the
ring. If he comes to fight, that is great. If he comes to lie
down like he did last time, then I feel sorry for the people
that bought tickets or are going to watch on HBO.
"The first fight wasn't a long fight, but in the two rounds that
it was, I was the one trying to press the fight. I was trying to
make the action."
