Miguel Berchelt: I'm
Sending A
Message To The Lightweight Division!" |
|
This is a time of firsts
for Mexican star Miguel "El Alacran" Berchelt. The
former WBC super featherweight world champion is now
campaigning as a lightweight and will begin his quest to
become a two-weight world champion Saturday against
Jeremiah Nakathila in the 10-round main event at Resorts
World Las Vegas.
Berchelt also moved his training camp from Mexico to Las
Vegas to work with a new head trainer, Jorge Capetillo.
The Nakathila bout will be his first since his title
reign ended via brutal knockout at the hands of Oscar
Valdez in February 2021. Berchelt (38-2, 34 KOs) made
six successful defenses of the title he won in January
2017, and he hopes the Nakathila fight is the start of a
fruitful lightweight campaign.

Press Conference Quotes |

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom
Sport Chairman: “Welcome to London, a huge press
conference for a fantastic fight. I say Domestic fight,
but also a fight that has such huge ramifications for
the world 175lbs scene.
“Joshua Buatsi, Olympic bronze medallist against Craig
Richards, a man who’s won British Titles, challenged for
the World Title as well. This is a kind of fight that
gets me excited, this is the kind of fight that seems so
obvious. Two brilliant Domestic fighters but also two
world class fighters as well.

In Front Of His Hometown Fans,
Mikael Zewski Fights For A Title |
|
By William Trillo
It was almost exactly twelve years ago that I first saw
Mikael Zewski (35-2, 23 KO’s) in the ring. The Canadian
from Trois-Rivières, Quebec beat his unsuspecting foe
into submission by round three. It was Mikael’s second
professional fight. It was an impressive victory for the
young fighter.
Having already traveled to Quebec twice to cover fights
I kept a watchful eye on Zewski. As my good fortune
would have it, I was able to cover the fighter live in
multiple times in both Montreal and Las Vegas. Over the
years Zewski has become a formidable fighter, a top
contender and a friend.

Billy’s Boxing Blog
Pure Chocolatito & More |
|
By William Trillo
Whether Julio Cesar Martinez coming into the title fight
overweight was a calculated risk (see Orlando Salido vs.
Vasyl Lomachenko) or just an irresponsible blunder, the
fact of the matter is, it didn’t distract Roman
“Chocolatito” Gonzalez in any way, shape or form.
The fight was pure “Chocolatito” through and through.
Any concerns that the fighter from Nicaragua is on the
downward side of his career were laid to rest in San
Diego. The future looks good for Gonzalez as big fights
loom. When asked what might be next, Gonzalez deferred
to the man he called his boss, that being Matchroom’s
Eddie Hearn. It’s hard to imagine that Hearn is not
going to take another crack at getting that Juan
Francisco Estrada trilogy fired up once again. Fight
fans are clamoring for that “Rubber Match” to happen,
and if we are learning anything about Hearn, it is that
he is getting a knack for giving the people what they
want.

Alvarado & Lopez Battle
To Draw In Commerce; Mercado Impresses With 1st Round KO |
|
By Albert Castillo
Photos: William Trillo
On Saturday night February 12, 2022, from the Commerce
Casino In Commerce, California, the triumvirate of Elite
Boxing Promotions, Red Boxing Promotions, and All Star
Boxing Promotions worked collaboratively and set the bar
high by putting together the one of the best fight cards
so far this year. The matchmaker is to be commended.
Eleven fights were on the card. Every underdog came in
ready to brawl and all were in shape. Although all the
favorites came out on top many of the matches were close
slugfests and one could be considered an upset in that
it ended in a draw. Count me in for the next fisticuffs
at the Commerce Casino by these three promoters.
