Valero Finally Exposed |
|
By William Trillo
For 26 fights WBC Lightweight Champ Edwin Valero flew under the
radar like a Stealth Bomber on a secret mission. The Venezuelan
B-52 was not only undefeated but all of his fights ended by KO.
No one has gone the distance with ol' Dynamite hands.
But because of an accumulation of different reasons, like being
banned from fighting in the U.S.A. because of a motorcycle wreck
head injury, being denied a U.S. visa because of a drunk-driving
charge in Texas, along with his strong support for Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez, Valero has seemed more of an urban myth
than a real fighter. But...the days of him destroying opponents
and then riding off into the sunset with fans saying "Who was
that masked man?", are officially over.

Adamek Narrowly Wins Over Estrada |
|
By Tim Donaldson
A lot was made of Tomasz Adamek’s first U. S. defense of his
International Heavyweight title. Not so much from Adamek’s side.
They already seemed to be looking forward to his next fight, a
possible match with Chris Arreola. Rightly so, Jason Estrada saw
this as a snub. The fight wasn’t even over, and Adamek already
was acting like the winner. Estrada let it be known that he
wasn’t simply going to be walked over on Adamek’s way to his
next fight.
Now Adamek’s fans, never doubting the great Tomasz, came out
like never before to support him. All of the available seating
sold out, and Main Events and The Prudential Center opened up
more seating for the fight, even with a snow storm that
blanketed much of the Northeast, although Newark and northern
New Jersey were spared the brunt of the storm. As always, they
were there, wearing the red and white, faces painted to match
the Polish flag, and banners reading Polska waving throughout
the arena.

After Year & A Half Layoff From Boxing,
Peter Quillan Defeats Fernando Zuniga |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Peter Quillan hadn’t fought since September of 2008. Although he
looked a little rusty from the layoff, he showed himself to
still be a contender. Now it could be argued that he took an
easy fight. Fernando Zuniga is almost eleven years older than
Quillan. What kind of a challenge could he possibly be? But
Zuniga never saw it that way.
Zuniga came out strong in the first round, and even though he
was walking into shots from Quillan, he was still landing his
own. Quillan ended the round strong, but it would not be
inconceivable for a judge to score the round for Zuniga.
However, a first round is only a first round. It is a time for
fighters to get used to their opponents, and first rounds don’t
always give a clear picture of the outcome of the fight.

Kolle Stops Coleman After 5 |
|
MN Middleweight champ Andy Kolle (20-2, 15 KO's)
stopped Pat "The Cat" Coleman earlier tonight at First Avenue in
Minneapolis. Coleman was crafty, but it was the 27 year old
Kolle that controlled the ring like a veteran. Kolle went to the
body in the early rounds but slowly began to shift his attack
upstairs as the rounds went by. Kolle put Coleman down in round
4 with a straight left. By the start of round 5, Coleman's left
eye was swelling, bloody and closing. Coleman was able to
survive the fifth but told referee Mark Nelson he couldn't see
in-between rounds and the fight was halted.

Valero Dominates DeMarco Through 9 En Route To TKO Win Despite
Accidental Cut On Forehead Early |
|
Edwin Valero (now 27-0, 27 KO's) kept his KO
streak intact and retained the WBC Lightweight Title by
impressively out boxing Antonio DeMarco over 9 rounds.
DeMarco started well, causing a cut on the right cheek of Valero
in the very first round with a jab, but that was about it. In
round 2, an accidental elbow caused a nasty two inch gash on the
right side of Valero's forehead that spewed blood down his face,
neck and chest. Valero was allowed to fight on, and fight on he
did, winning nearly every round after, with the cut never being
a factor in the fight. DeMarco was just busy waiting and waiting
to land one big punch, which were too few and far between.
Valero was just busy period, throwing punches from all angles
and in constant combinations.
After the 8th round, DeMarco held his head down in the corner
like a beaten fighter as his corner asked him what he wanted to
do. He fought one more round as Valero put on the final touches.
DeMarco's corner had seen enough and stopped the fight after 9
rounds were complete. DeMarco falls to 23-2-1 with 17 KO's.

Abregu Wins Unanimous Decision Over Gutierrez In Action Packed
Where Both Traded Knockdowns |
|
Juan Carlos Abregu (now 29-0, 23 KO's) once again
rose off the canvas to defeat his opponent in impressive
fashion. This time it was tough veteran Richard Gutierrez.
In round 2, a short left hook on the chin sent Abregu staggering
to the canvas. Up on uneasy legs, Gutierrez went in for the
finish with nearly two minutes to go in the round, but could
just not land the big punch. In round 3, a right uppercut
followed by another right hand and left hook sent Gutierrez
staggering and down to the canvas himself. Gutierrez barely made
it out of the round as Abregu pounded away. In round 4, both men
staggered each other with big right hands.
Throughout the fight, Abregu was just the busier fighter,
despite having to use his legs more in the last few rounds.
Gutierrez just couldn't find the range to land his big punch
from round 2. Final scores were 98-90, 97-91 and 97-91.
Gutierrez falls to 24-4-1-1 with 14 KO's.

Hopkins about the validity of the fight.

May Day! May Day! Now It’s Official
Mayweather vs. Mosley |
|
|
By William Trillo
After almost a week of wondering why
Floyd Mayweather Jr. had not signed the contract to make
the May 1st Las Vegas battle with Shane Mosley official,
the wheels are finally officially in motion as
Mayweather scratched his name on a contract that was
promptly put into Golden Boy Promotion’s Richard
Schaefer possession. Shortly after Mayweather had signed
the contract Schaefer contacted yours truly saying,
“William, Just got back from a meeting and I have the
contract signed. The fight is on!”
This time there was no premature speculation or
innuendo, (more on that later), the fight is a done and
if all goes according to plan, Floyd and Shane will be
in Miami this weekend to be a part of the Super Bowl
festivities and of course they will be there to pump the
volume up on a fight that is a sure fire can’t miss
event!
