Nielsen KO's Andino To Defend WBA
Intercontinental Middleweight Title |
|
|
Photos: Photo Wende
WBA Intercontinental Middleweight
Champion Patrick Nielsen improved to 19-0 (9 KOs) on
Saturday night in Aarhus, Denmark when he knocked out
Crispulo Javier Andino (16-6-1, 7 KOs) in the fourth
round. In his first fight with renowned US coach Joey
Gamache in his corner, Nielsen dominated from the
beginning. He worked behind his jab and went to the
body. In the fourth, a left to the body sent the
Argentinian down. He beat the count – only to go down
again after another flurry of punches. “I am pleased
with my performance,” Nielsen said. “The training with
Joey has been very good. It all came together nicely
today and I am happy that I stopped Andino.” Said
promoter Nisse Sauerland: “Patrick looked very sharp.
Andino never had a chance. That was a great win for
him.”

Despite Circumstances Andrade
Comes Out Victorious In Tabasco |
|
|
By William Trillo
What should a fighter do if the airlines
loses his luggage and all his gear never makes it to the
final destination? We are talking trunks, robe,
mouthpiece, not to mention the piece that protects his
unmentionables. After that what would you do if at the
weigh-in you suddenly find out your opponent will not be
allowed to fight?
If you are former title challenger Librado Andrade
(30-5,23 KO's) you find a way to make things happen. You
get to the local sporting goods store and put together
some impromptu fighting gear and you tell your promoter
there is no way you want to leave Mexico without
fighting. Especially since it's already happened to you
once before. And then after putting those pieces
together you go out on fight night and promptly
annihilate your foe.

Garcia Obliterates Juanma Inside 4 |
|
|
Photo: Chris Farina - Top Rank
Mikey Garcia (now 32-0, 27 KO's)
made quick work of Juan Manuel Lopez, dropping him in twice
along the way to a 4th round stoppage. From the start, Garcia
was in complete control. Juanma looked awkward rusty and just
not himself. Perhaps his best days are behind him because he was
just not in the fight for one second. Garcia needed to just time
Lopez coming in to land a big right hand that put him down for
the first time in round 2. Lopez began to get desperate and
started reaching with big shots, but it was all kinds of wrong
as he just left him more open. In round 4, a right over the top
flush on the temple sent Juanma in a daze. Garcia finished with
a left hook and Lopez would be flat on his back. Lopez did beat
the count, but was in no condition to continue and the fight was
rightfully waived off at 1:35. Lopez falls to 33-3 with 30
KO's. Since Garcia failed to make the featherweight limit at the
weigh-in, the WBO title becomes vacant.

Crawford Stops Sanabria In 6 In Dallas, TX |
|
Terence Crawford (now 21-0, 16 KO's) remained
unbeaten with another great performance, this time over tough
Alejandro Sanabria. Crawford was willing to exchange in the
middle of the ring with Sanabria and it paid off. Left hooks
staggered Sanabria in the 3rd and a picture perfect lead left
hook put Sanabra down in the 16th. Sanabria fell awkwardly and
did a roll head first then ended up on his back. Sanabria beat
the count, but could not stand steadily and the fight was waived
off 17 seconds into the round. Sanabria drops to 34-2-1 with 25
KO's.

The Gym Group Ready To Make
An Offer To Bernard Hopkins |
|
MONTRÉAL - The GYM Group, leads by the promoter
Yvon Michel, will make an offer to Bernard Hopkins to persuade
him to come in Montréal to fight Adonis Stevenson this summer.
Stevenson (21-1-0), who dethroned Chad Dawson (30-3-0) as WBC
light heavyweight champion of the world last Saturday at the
Bell Centre in Montréal, said after his victory by TKO in the
first round that his new priority, is to fight Hopkins in a
unification bout for the WBC and IBF titles. Hopkins (53-6-2)
was supposed to defend his IBF crown against the German Karo
Murat (25-1-1) July 13th in Brooklyn, New York, but the fight
has been postponed because Murat has been unable to get a visa
to fight in USA. If Hopkins says no, Stevenson, a southpaw from
Montréal, could make the first defense of his WBC crown against
his mandatory challenger, the British Tony Bellew (20-1-1), or
fight in an unification titles bout for the WBC and the WBA
crowns against Beibut Shumenov (13-1-0), from Kazakhstan.

In the main event, scheduled for ten rounds, heavyweight
contender Bryant "By-By" Jennings, 17-0, 9 KOs, remained
undefeated with a bruising sixth round TKO of Russian
Andrey Fedosov, 24-3, 19 KOs. Both heavyweights took
turns landing their shots, but Jennings was the quicker
and stronger of the two. Over time, Jennings, of
Philadelphia, wore his opponent down and eventually
closed his left eye. Fedosov tested Jennings all night,
but Bryant passed the stiff test with flying colors.

Adonis Stevenson: "The Attention I Have
Received Since Saturday Is Amazing" |
|
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL --- Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, lost
the world champion of his organization in 2010 when Jean Pascal
(27-2-1) lost his WBC light heavyweight crown to Bernard Hopkins
in Montréal, but he gained one Saturday at Bell Centre, when the
southpaw Adonis Stevenson won this WBC light heavyweight crown.
Stevenson (21-1-0), a fighter of 35 years old living in a
Montréal suburb, shocked the world Saturday evening. He needed
only 76 seconds of action to dethrone the veteran Chad Dawson
(30-3-0) as WBC champion of the world. It was the first time in
16 years that a light heavyweight championship of the world
ended in the first round.

While Defeating Villanueva On HBO Latino |

This past Saturday at the Bell Centre in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada, highly touted Puerto Rican prospect,
Jose "Sniper" Pedraza (13-0, 9 KO's) made an impressive HBO

The 24 year old ambidextrous fighter was able to establish the
pace of fight from the opening bell. In the middle rounds
Pedraza was fighting from both stances, southpaw to
conventional, confusing his opponent while landing clean shots.
Pedraza's body attack was superb throughout the entire match and
in the fifth round he managed to send Villanueva to the canvas.
As the body attack continued the bout was halted in the seventh
round at the 2:59 mark when Pedraza dropped Villanueva twice,

Golden Boy's Eric Gomez Update On Angulo Injury |
|
By William Trillo
Photo: Marlene Marquez
From the Adonis Stevenson one punch KO
over Chad Dawson to the Marcos Maidana stoppage over a
game Josesito Lopez this past Saturday gave boxing fans
plenty to talk about around the water cooler on Monday
morning, but it's the Erislandy Lara vs. Alfredo Angulo
war that will have boxing fans talking for months. The
injury over the eye that forced Angulo to stop fighting
came suddenly and was as gruesome looking as anything
seen in the ring in quite sometime. Whether or not he
actually got thumbed as he claims or just suffered the
effects of one too many flush blows, Angulo has a very
serious injury to deal with and after having a
conversation with Golden Boy's Eric Gomez on Sunday it's
still not clear exactly what kind of damage Angulo has
suffered.

not part of the boxing major leagues. He was wrong. Stevenson
said many times that Dawson would not stay on his legs on the
impact of his power shots. He was right.
Stevenson, a southpaw from Montréal, sent Dawson to the floor

feet, but he was clearly weak and hurt. The referee Mike Griffin
stopped the fight and declared Dawson TKO after only 1:16 minute

eventually rise to his feet to beat the count, he was unsteady
on his feet and did not raise his hands. He was in no way in any

credited with a knockdown in the 1st round where Perez slipped

ruled a knockdown. Gamboa seemed content with doing the least

scores were 116-111, 116-111 and 115-112.

Maidana Stops Lopez In 6; War As Advertised |
|
|
Photo: Marlene Marquez
Marcos Maidana (now 34-3, 31 KO's)
stopped Josesito Lopez in round 6 in a fight that turned
into the war it was advertised to be. From the opening
round, both men were in the center of the ring, ready to
throw big bombs. A few clinches from the bigger Lopez
kept the fight from getting off for the first two
rounds, but in round 3, it was all war. Both men were
trading with everything they had, back and forth in a
tremendous round-of-the-year candidate. In round 4,
Maidana staggered Lopez into the ropes, then back came
Lopez to stagger Maidana at the end of the round. The in
round 5 it was Mainda who staggered Lopez early. In
round 6, Maidana landed a right to the body followed by
a right to the temple and Lopez was down on one knee.
Lopez would rise, but not fully recovered, as Maidana
went in for the kill, landing more big shots through the
guard of Lopez who looked almost defenseless on the
ropes. Referee Lou Moret jumped in and waived it off at
1:18. Lopez falls to 30-6-1 ND with 18 KO's.

Lara Rises From The Canvas Twice To Stop Angulo
In 10 In Back & Forth War That Deserves A Rematch |
|
|
Photo: Marlene Marquez
Erislandy Lara (now 18-1-2, 12 KO's) met
the canvas, twice, for the first time in his career,
only to get up each time with more conviction to stop
the tough Alfredo Angulo in the 10th after a huge
hematoma appeared over Angulo's eye that prompted him to
turn his back and the fight be stopped.
From the opening round, both men had a great fight plan.
Lara was to box and move, and that he did beautifully.
And Angulo was to not give Lara any room to breath,
keeping constant pressure, which he also did
beautifully.
Lara began to rack up the rounds with straight lefts,
but a huge left hook to the chin sent Lara down for the
first time ever in the 4th round. Lara was hurt bad, but
he kept his composure and began to box around the ring
as if nothing had even happened, taking over the next
few rounds.
Angulo would again land the left hook flush, dropping
Lara in the 9th round, but again, Lara got up, and began
to win again, though he did look like his energy was
running out.
In the 10th, Lara would land a jab, followed by a
straight left, then another jab and left, all connecting
on Angulo's left eye. Angulo raised up from ducking low,
then pointed to his eye and turned his back to Lara.
Referee Raul Caiz has no choice but the waive the fight
off at 1:50. Angulo's eye had instantly swollen nearly 3
times the size and is suspected he has suffered a
fractured orbital bone.
Angulo falls to 22-3 with 18 KO's.

Charlo & Hopkins Stink Up The Home Depot Center |

Jermell Charlo (now 21-0, 10 KO's) won a 12-round
unanimous decision over Demetrius Hopkins in a fight that
received more boos from the fans than connecting blows within
the fight. From the start, Hopkins wanted to keep his distance
and Charlo could not find a way inside. Many clinches ensued,
and many rounds lacking any sort of excitement. Neither threw
hardly any body punches and despite the victory, Charlo didn't
show much of anything special. Hopkins was not active enough,
but did land the more telling punches. Final scores were 115-113
on all three cards.

week for Golden Boy Promotions came a surprise when Chief
Executive Officer Richard Schaefer called a staff meeting to
announce several changes to the Los Angeles based company's

service, COO David Itskowitch has decided to leave the company
