Night of
Champions on DirecTV
Story & Photos By Luis "The Beast" Cadiz WBO 105 pound champ, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon, pleased his hometown crowd with the 10th defense of his title. The Coliseo Mario "Quijote" Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was the place where thousands of fans witnessed Calderon's defense plus an action packed under card. It is a shame that after this 10th defense, "Iron Boy" will not be able to unify his crown in the 105 pound division, a division he has ruled with an iron grip. No other champ wants to risk getting the boxistic lesson of their life so the only way up for Ivan Calderon is up, to the 108 pound division. Believe me, he is really that good! Tonight was no exception... 12 rounds WBO Championship Bout - 105 lbs. Miguel Tellez (17-5, 6KOs) vs. Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon (25-0, 5KOs)
From the opening bell, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon stuck and moved, danced, slipped in and out... he did everything to confuse and manipulate Miguel Tellez in the ring that it wasn't funny. The frustration on the face of the Nicaraguan rival was more than evident. It was as if he was screaming to his corner in desperation, looking for an answer to decipher Ivan's enigmatic style. It was no use, his fate was sealed. In the 4th round a punch opened a gash over the right eye of Tellez and Calderon kept on popping that eye throughout the next four rounds. Don't get me wrong, Miguel Tellez tried to apply pressure but it was no use. If he played the aggressor, Calderon was elusive... if he tried to box, Calderon would then connect more frequently. Don't forget the cut over his right eye wasn't helping either.
In the 9th, Tellez began to bleed freely and the ring doctor checked the cut, but he was able to continue. The flow of blood was too great in the 10th and the ring doctor had seen enough. The bout was called to a halt in 1min.:04sec. of the 10th round. Calderon walks away with another impressive performance, improves his record to 26-0, 6 KOs and is considered the best 105 pounder of the world. 12 rounds IBF Regional Title - 118 lbs. Heriberto Ruiz (34-4-2, 19KOs) vs. Irene Pacheco (31-1, 24KOs) Since losing his IBF Flyweight title to Vic Darchinyan, TKO loss in the 11th round on December 16th, 2004, Irene Pacheco wants to get back on the championship road and this bout is just another obstacle on the before mentioned path. In the 1st round they studied each other, but it was evident from the opening bell that Pacheco would play the aggressor and Ruiz would use his long arms to try to keep his foe at bay. It was see-saw action in rounds 2 and 3, but Heriberto Ruiz did suffer a cut on the side of his left eye due to an accidental head butt in the 2nd. Ruiz came back with a good 4th round with long shot combos. Pacheco realizing that Ruiz was gaining confidence, he slowed his momentum with some body work and vicious head shots in the 5th. Both were warned in the 6th for low blows. They had great close quarter action in the 8th against the ropes, in my opinion, Pacheco was the one who faired better of the two. The Colombian realized this because in the 9th, he would look for ways to corner Ruiz or maneuver the Mexican against the ropes. Heriberto showed a lot of heart in the 11th round by exchanging blows and effectively keeping the action in the middle of the ring. In the 12th, Irene Pacheco rocked Ruiz with a right shot to the head that wobbled him, but the Mexican warrior held on to the final bell. Pacheco gets the unanimous decision win and the IBF regional belt and improves to 32-1 with 24 KOs. 10 rounds - 140 lbs. Cesar Bazan (45-7-1, 29KOs) vs. Henry Bruseles (23-3-1, 14KOs)
They were aggressive from the opening bell, Bruseles looked good in the 1st round but was floored in the 2nd with a right and left combo to the head. Bruseles came back strong in the 3rd, sending a message to both Bazan and the crowd that he was fine. In the 4th, Bruseles cut Bazan with some ripping right shots under his left eye. Heated exchanges in the 5th, 6th and 7th, much in the same fashion, Bruseles in control in the beginning of each of those rounds and then Bazan finishing off those same rounds strong. In the 8th, a mouse began to appear under Bruseles' right eye, product of Bazan's long left jab. The 9th had a mix of combos from both fighters with a lot grabbing and grappling. They pushed each other to their limit in the 10th but Bruseles inflicted enough damage to walk away with the win. Henry "El Nitro" Bruseles gets the unanimous decision win and improves to 24-3-1 with 14 KOs while Cesar Bazan falls to 45-8-1 with 29 KOs. 6 rounds - 135 lbs. Edgar Villa (4-4, 2KOs) vs. Alex "El Pollo" DeJesus (9-0, 6KOs) This was a fight that was left over and was the last bout of the evening. The wait was way much longer than the duration of the bout, it only took 2min.:11sec. of the very first round for "El Pollo" DeJesus to dispose of Edgar Villa and improve his record to 10-0 with 7 KOs. 4 rounds - 140 lbs. Angel Torres (Pro - Debut) vs. Joel Torres (1-0) Though this fight didn't end in KO fashion, it was the best 4 rounder of the evening. This was Angel Torres' very first professional fight and he was fighting a local favorite in Joel Torres, but he definitely didn't act as if though he had a case of the "jitters". On the contrary, he fought as if though he wanted to be the party crasher of the night. But it was Joel Torres' party, and his hometown was hosting the event, so... Joel walks away with a unanimous decision win. I would have deemed it a draw and I think no one would have complained either. Non - Televised Action 4 rounds - 122 lbs. Jose Gonzalez (0-2) vs. Jesus Rojas (1-0, 1KO) Starting the night off with a bang... or a thud... Jesus Rojas gets the TKO win in :58sec. of the 2nd round. 4 rounds - 126 lbs. Luis Colon (1-2) vs. Marcos Jimenez (4-0, 2KOs) Jimenez is a tall kid for this weight class and he uses his boxistic tools well. Gets a TKO victory in 1min.:48sec. of the 2nd round. 4 rounds - 130 lbs. Miguel Rodriguez (2-0) vs. Gabriel Diaz (0-1) Rodriguez gets a majority decision win, that the crowd didn't agree with, and improves to 3-0. 4 rounds - 115 lbs. Felix Nazario (Pro - Debut) vs. David Quijano (1-0, 1KO) Quijano wins in devastating KO fashion with just a few seconds left of the very first round. 4 rounds - 147 lbs. Rafael Mesorrama (0-2) vs. Eric Rodriguez (1-1, 1KO) The body work that Rodriguez performed on Mesorrama made the difference and he finished him off in :38sec. of the 3rd round, KO style. 6 rounds - 118 lbs. Martin Armenta (10-11-3, 6KOs) vs. Juan Mercedes (12-1, 9KOs)
Mercedes rolled over Armenta with a KO victory in 1min.:17sec. of round number 1. With this fight, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon has solidified his position in the 105 pound division and now goes in search of bigger and better things. The two champs that are being considered for his ascension to the 108 pound division are WBC Light Flyweight Champ, Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria and WBO Light Flyweight Champ, Hugo Cazeres. In that same order. Time to test his iron grip in the next division. Stay tuned to Boxing2006.com for all your boxing news... Good bye and God Bless Luis M. Cadiz Sr.
