Povetkin
Dismantles Chambers
By William Trillo
Okay future Rocket Scientists here's today's quiz. What do you
get when when you combine the following ingredients? Fast Hands
with no power + Lead Feet + Jelly Belly + Good Whiskers? That my
friends gives you a fighter who will never win a World title but
will be great work for fighters who are making their way to the
top. Let's call him Eddie Chambers.
In a bout that was staged as the IBF # 1 eliminator Alexander
Povetkin lived up to his pedigree while systematically
dismantling Eddie Chambers who never appeared to be in this
fight in any way, shape or form. Judges scorecards read 117-111,
119-109 and 116-112 all in favor of Povetkin.
Quite frankly, the 116-112 score by Phil Edwards should raise
more than a few eyebrows and his vision should be checked
immediately. The 119-109 score is much closer to reality,
Chambers was never in it and admitted it after the fight saying,
"Mentally, maybe, I lost my concentration," Chambers then said,
"A lot of it depends on my jab. My corner kept telling me to do
it, but I couldn't get it right."
Speaking of his corner, why did they hire Buddy Mc Girt in
January, drag him all away across the ocean to be there for
support and then keep him out of the ring and 5 feet away from
Chambers in between rounds?
Buddy's best quote came before round 11 when he told Chambers,
"You have to dig deep!"
Hey Buddy, that was the problem, Chambers had dug real deep. In
fact, he dug a hole so deep there was no way for him to climb
out. And please don't mention anything like a KO, not from soft
handed Chambers.
As to Povetkin, this guy is the real deal and my choice for top
European Heavyweight contender and only slightly under the Champ
Wladimir Klitschko. Povetkin appears to be a strange hybrid,
part European style, part Mexican, and all fighter. That's a
formula that will be hard for any fighter to deal with.
The White Lions work ethic is undeniable, he was throwing
punches in combinations non-stop through the entire 12 round
blitz. Even through another cut eye, which is the only flaw I
see in Povetkin, Alexander was...well...great.
After the fight the humble Povetkin said, "This fight was
harder, much harder than earlier, technically especially," said
Povetkin, whose right eye was swollen. "It was a complicated
fight."
Chambers did have a few brief moments and exposed some defensive
troubles that Povetkin addressed. "I will have to do a lot of
work on myself before I fight Wladimir Klitschko," he said.
If Povetkin can tighten up his defense and stay away from
getting cut early, he may be able to handle everything Klitschko
has to offer...and more.
