Goossen Promoted Card To Be Applauded As Well

This past Saturday Night's Goossen Tutor promoted card was a winner from top to bottom and obviously the biggest winner on the HBO Boxing After Dark card was Carlos Quintana who dethroned Paul Williams who and took his WBO 147 belt.

Lost amidst plenty of post fight comments and speculation of Williams fighting 2 or 3 weight classes under where he should and the fact that maybe he didn't know how to fight a southpaw,  was the fact that Quintana was willing to tread on ground where few men feared to step. Not many in the Welterweight division where willing to get in with the lanky and powerful Williams and when Kermit Cintron fell by the wayside due to injury it was Carlos Quintana who stepped up to take the call.

After his blowout loss to fellow Puerto Rican and Champion Miguel Cotto things began to look pretty bleak for Quintana and leaving the game of boxing and going back to his full time gas station attendant job seemed like a very real option.

That's when promoter Lou Dibella stepped in and helped Carlos find his way back onto a big time card last year as part of the first Taylor vs Pavlik affair. DiBella told Pound4Pound, " I knew this kid was a real good fighter and that's why I went after him." Anyone who saw Quintana dismantle Joel Julio and saw him get off the canvas to do so would know why Dibella was not worried about putting him in with Williams. Quintana is a fine boxer and has the heart of warrior. He proved that to Dibella a year ago and he proved it to Williams and the World this weekend.

From the opening bell Quintana was pushing the bigger man around and was easily taking the early rounds. Quintana was sticking and then getting out of those 82 inch reach arms time and time again. Williams was throwing, but all his was catching was air. In return Quntana was catching Williams with shots that were buckling the tall mans knees.
Obviously off his game Williams had to rely on his tenacity to get him through this one, and at times his stay busy effort was scoring. Williams caught Quintana on the ropes on a few occasions, but every time "El Indio" found a way of escape and was able to fend of the Champions best efforts.

"The Punisher", who is known for some wicked uppercuts finally was getting a taste of his own medicine and in the mid to late rounds uppercuts from Quintana hurt Williams big time. By the latter stages of the bout Williams was bleeding over both eyes and things were looking very grim for the Champ.

As the bell rang at the end of round 12 the facial expressions of each fighter told the story. Williams held his head down awaiting the verdict while Quintana was in near tears as he knew he pulled off the upset.
When the judges confirmed what everyone in the house knew, Quintana and his wife embraces with tears of jubilation. "El Indio" did exactly what he told DiBella he was going to do, to go home a Champion.

For Williams it's time to evaluate and figure out where he goes from here. If he listens to the critics he will never fight at 147 again and he may stay away from another Southpaw for quite sometime. If he invokes his rematch clause and takes on Quintana you will know exactly what he thinks of the so called experts opinions.

Either way, the landscape at 147 pounds has changed again with 3/4's of the major belts now belonging to Puerto Rican fighters, the other belt is held by some guy named Floyd.

Berto Overwhelms German Journeyman
Andre Berto took on a tough journeyman from Germany by the name of  Michel Trabant who sported some 40 plus fights with only 2 losses. Berto who also fights in the 147 pound division had little if any trouble at all with Trabant. In fact the only problem Berto was having is that the tough German would not go down from any of the barrage of punches Berto was landing, and there were many. For six grueling rounds Berto busted Trabant with everything but the kitchen sink. In return Trabant threw nothing, literally.
It's easy to see Berto is well on his way to a shot at a belt but hopefully his next fight or two will come against foes who are a little less willing to be Andre's paid human punching bag.

Arreola Makes Quick Work Of Couser
Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola came off a long break but made a short night of it with Chris Couser. Arreola was all over Couser from the get go and in what was only a matter of seconds Couser was hurt and grimacing while looking for a place to flop. The undefeated heavyweight turned up the attack on the non to willing Couser and before this one could get going, it was over. It was nice to see Chris back in the ring and with an easy outing like this there is no doubt we will see him back in action shortly. The same shouldn't be said for Couser who made this night a breeze for "The Nightmare".
