Bute vs. Brinkley Post Fight Overview

By Daniel Cloutier

I covered the fight between Bute-Brinkley and honestly my prediction was that Bute would win by TKO in the second round. But, it seems that Bute got the flu the day of the fight. Because he was ill he was not sharp in defense, like usual.

Bute's trainer Stephan Larouche said after the bout, "In the dressing room, Lucian was watching on the screen the Diaconu-Sheika's fight, and maybe his concentration on the Brinkley's fight has been a bit affected. In the future, I will suggest that Diaconu will not fight just before the Lucian fights. Lucian and Diaconu are such good friends (they are both Romanians). After the second round, Lucian started to be productive with his uppercuts, because he followed my advice. I told him to bend when he was close to Brinkley, to be in better position to throw uppercuts."

Bute said, "Brinkley is very courageous. I sent him on the floor three times (5th, 8th and 9th), and each time I was sure that he was hurt enough to stay in the canvas and be counted for 10. But each times, he survived, except in the ninth round. I did pretty well offensively in most of the rounds, but not defensively. I had some problems to adjust to his unorthodox style. But, believe me, I did not take him lightly."

Interbox's Jean Bédard said that Bute has a strong chances to face Kelly Pavlik in March, on HBO, if Pavlik wins against Bryan Vera in Dallas November 13th.The fight, he said, would be presented in Montreal.
