With the boxing media assembled in Las Vegas for tonight’s Mayweather vs. Mosley championship fight, Golden Boy Promotions made the most of the moment by announcing the rematch between Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz. The pair first battled on February 28, 2009 at the Toyota Center, Houston in the 2009 Fight of the Year.

“A lot of people ask me, why Juan Diaz again?” shared Juan Manuel Marquez. “I have two reasons. One, Juan Diaz is a great fighter and he deserves a rematch. Two, a lot of people want to see this fight.” Marquez is right; a lot of people do want to see the rematch. Mark Taffet, Sr. VP of Sports Operations at HBO, called Marquez and Diaz, “Two of the best lightweights in the world. Two men who can’t wait to get back into the ring and do it again.”

In the first fight Diaz was leading through eight but was stopped in the ninth by a devastating uppercut. He vowed redemption in the rematch. “Come July 31st, I’m going to pick up in the 9th round.”

Marquez vs. Diaz II is set for Saturday, July 31at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, NV.
