Failure Is Not An Option With
Miguel Cotto
By Damon “Latinbox” Gonzalez
Tampa, Florida – There were no hard choices for Miguel Cotto
moving up to junior middleweight to fight Yuri Forman on
June 5th. There is nothing more important to him than his
family but now it is time to work after meeting with the
press on Friday at Yankee Stadium. The site was all too
recognized by the calm and collected Cotto, who has made
Tampa, Florida a sort of second home. There has been
overwhelming concern from the fans about the warrior from
Caguas, Puerto Rico, who has been in his fair share of
vicious wars throughout his career. There was no other
choice for Miguel than to make a solid upgrade in his camp.
The biggest addition to the training atmosphere has been
bringing aboard future boxing hall of famer Emanuel Steward,
who last week traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with Cotto to
discuss each other’s concerns and interests in making this
camp a success.
Emanuel Steward had this to say about Cotto: “He is behind
the driving wheel and has caught too many DUI’s in his last
five fights. He has taken some extreme beatings and in most
cases kept on coming but took a lot in return.” Emanuel went
on to state that, “it will be a tough mountain to climb. Me
and Cotto want to win this one; he will be going into Yankee
Stadium like the underdog. Fans from everywhere have come to
me expressing there concerns about Cotto. What is important
is that he shows up every single day and works extremely
hard. In Cotto’s last fight for example, he fought like a
guy in a shell with his 5’7” frame. Cotto is going to move
all over the place and box, box, box!”
“He must fight tall and work hard in sparring, like I said,
Cotto is serious and he wants to win. The Fight Factory,
wow, what a great facility. I cannot be more pleased with
sitting down with owner Pete Fernandez and working up the
fight plan that we have in front of us; I am very excited.
The Cotto camp is just full of wonderful people and I look
forward to continually working with them.”
